Luther created the text and melody in 1524, and it was first published in the same year. It has been used for funerals and appears in Schütz’ Heinrich Schütz (1585-1672) Musikalische Exequien and Bach’s chorale cantata Mit Fried und Musikalische Exequien, "Funeral Mass", Op. 7 Freud ich fahr dahin, BWV 125. The Recorded Examples Les Illustrations Sonores
The recorded examples The eight CDs that accompany this treatise follow its argument closely. Lengthy works or those on a large scale are represented by a few well-chosen excerpts; we have also chosen to refer the listener to certain complete recordings that are easily available through normal commercial channels. The greatest performers of our time have devoted their talents to making these works live again; some of these works have also enjoyed stage revivals, as was the case with Lully’s Atys, conducted by William Christie and directed by Jean-Marie Villégier in 1987 in a staging that has since become legendary. More recently, the young conductor Sébastien Daucé has presented the first reconstruction of aballet de cour, the Ballet royal de la Nuit. -

Reissues from Ricercar, Eloquence and Beulah - January 2018 by Brian Wilson
Reissues from Ricercar, Eloquence and Beulah - January 2018 By Brian Wilson I would normally have included these reissues in one of the Second Thoughts and Short Reviews which I write with Dan Morgan, but the latest edition is already quite full, and I thought that these releases merited a separate article to themselves. The three series occupy different niches: the Ricercar, labelled Ricercar con Echo, are releases of earlier CD offerings from the late 1980s to the 2000s; Eloquence bring recordings from the Universal group of labels, Decca, DG and Philips; the Beulah are download only reissues of classic material from LP and, in some cases, 78s. Beulah downloads can be obtained from iTunes and Amazon, but in mp3 and usually at less than the full 320kbs. It sometimes takes a little longer before they appear, at the same price of £7.99, from Qobuz, but it’s worth waiting to hear them in the same quality as my press previews. Though sourced from disc rather than master tape, the quality is almost always as high as, for example, the same material reissued by Decca on Eloquence, often differently coupled. No booklet is ever included. Ricercar seem to be incapable of offering decent quality review previews – they tell me that it isn’t feasible. Though they had at least begun to encode their mp3 at the full 320kbs, the present batch came at an unacceptably low 192kbs – no better than BBC Radio 3 on DAB. I expect that these reissues will become available in better sound, presumably from eclassical.com; I’ll report back if and when that happens. -

Spring 2020/#1B by Brian Wilson, Johan Van Veen and David Barker
Second Thoughts and Short Reviews: Spring 2020/#1B By Brian Wilson, Johan van Veen and David Barker This is the second part of Spring 2020/1. It’s indexed in the first part. Richard STRAUSS (1864-1949) Metamorphosen, TRV290 (1945) [28:43] Ludwig van BEETHOVEN (1770-1827) Symphony No.3 in E flat, Op. 55 ‘Eroica’ (1804) [46:32] Sinfonia Grange au Lac/Esa-Pekka Salonen rec. July 2018, La Grange au Lac, Évian, France. DDD. Reviewed as lossless (.wav) press preview ALPHA 544 [75:20] CD available from I mentioned this recording briefly in Autumn 2019/1 – I was waiting for a better (lossless) transfer than the low-rate mp3 which Outhere had originally sent and I received the wav version only at the last minute, as I was completing that edition. My only reservation was to Stream from wonder if there really was a clientele of those who wanted these two works together, but then I found myself comparing the mood of Furtwängler’s recording of Beethoven’s Fifth (1944) with Strauss’s Metamorphosen, a work which must have been gestating at around the same time and was performed the year after that recording. Also, I had forgotten that the Strauss contains a quotation from the Eroica, as if to call upon the spirit of Beethoven, lost in the war years. Thus, I have negated my own reservations about a recording which Michael Cookson reviewed favourably, prompted myself to look at it again, and now enjoy the coupling much more.
