To add to this, Jonathan Potter Ltd has moved to new gallery premises in Marylebone, one of the most pleasant parts of central London. From the fifteenth century incunable woodcut map of the ancient world from Schedels’ ‘Chronicarum...’ to decorative 1960s maps of the French wine regions, the range of maps available to collectors and enthusiasts whether for study or just decoration is apparent. Although the majority of maps fall within the ‘traditional’ definition of antique, we have included a number of twentieth and late ninteenth century publications – a significant period in history and cartography which we find fascinating and in which we are seeing a growing level of interest and appreciation. Mazza's map is particularly noteworthy for three reasons: First map to show a recognizable portrayal of the Outer Banks of the Carolinas First map to correctly name the island of Roanoke, Virginia (founded in 1587) First map to specifically mention an English settlement in North America For many years Mazza's map has been part of a fascinating debate as to its sources and its relationship to two of the most iconic maps of the Americas, Abraham Ortelius's Americae Sive Novi Orbis Nova Descriptio (1587) and his Maris Pacifici (1589), the first printed map of the Pacific. Little is known about Mazza beyond his Venetian roots. The publisher, Donato Rascicotti, was an active part of the Lafreri School of map publishers. He was originally from Brescia but worked from a shop on the Ponte dei Baretteri in Venice. They worked together on other maps; this map was part of a set of four of the continents. All are extremely rare. -

Její cílem je posouzení strategického významu Arktidy založené na analýze kritických geopolitických teorií Sira Halforda Mackindera a Generála Karla Haushofera. Analýza je doplněná o historický přehled vojenských aktivit na Arktidě během dvou světových válek. Použitá metoda v téhle interpretativní studii Arktického regionu je komparace. Využíváme historicko-analytický přístup, který zohledňuje roli systémových struktur makrosociálních jevů a zároveň specifické chování aktérů v jednotlivých případech. Jde o základní pokus o komparativní historií, která je součástí této analyticko-popisné komparativní studie. Porovnáváme odlišné přístupy klasických geopolitických teorií vůči Arktickému regionu. Následně se věnujeme vojenské aktivitě od začátku první světové války do konce druhé světové války v Arktickém regionu. Věnujeme se otázkám zdrojů, mořských cest a roli Aljašky. Práce je zakončená kritickým posouzením přístupu geopolitických teorií k Arktickému regionu a jejich potenciální korelaci s vojenskou aktivitou první a druhé světové války. An index of published names of liverworts and hornworts between 2009 and 2010 is provided as part of a continued effort in working toward producing a world checklist of this group. Included in the list are also names overlooked by earlier indices. The list includes 30 higher taxa, 250 species, 52 infraspecific taxa, 31 autonyms, and two fossils for 2009 and 2010. A number of taxa not covered by the earlier indices for 2000-2008 are also included. Key words: Liverworts, hornworts, index, nomenclature Introduction Under the auspices of the Early Land Plants Today project, there has been a strong community-driven effort attempting to address the critical need to synthesize the vast nomenclatural, taxonomic and global distributional data for liverworts (Marchantiophyta) and hornworts (Anthocerotophyta) (von Konrat et al. 2010a). These endeavours are critical in providing the foundation to develop a working checklist of liverworts and hornworts worldwide; the first version is projected to be published in 2012. -

Warwick Anderson, Miranda Johnson, and Barbara Brookes, 131–54 (Honolulu: University of Hawai’i Press, 2018) Imagined Futures in the Past: Empire, Place, Race and Nation in the Mapping of Oceania Bronwen Douglas Abstract Since 1511, recurrent couplings of fact and fantasy, the familiar and the imagined, have driven the European invention, naming, mapping and regionalization of the fifth part of the world, known as Oceania after 1815. Using comparative critique of maps as historical texts, this chapter investigates the relationships of experience, expectation and hope in cartography’s varied graphic realization or anticipation of religious, imperial, scientific, racial, colonial, national and digital visions. I outline successive vignettes of the spatial framing of the fifth part of the world or Oceania as mapped and named from the sixteenth century—in early modern geopolitics, in shifting global visions from the Renaissance to the late eighteenth century, and in regional cartography from the mid-eighteenth to the twenty-first centuries. The vignettes conjoin to show how uneasy liaisons of empirical observation, imagination, desire and deductive reasoning generated Euro-American maps, culminating in the appropriated colonial palimpsest that underlies modern maps of Oceania’s states. I conclude by reflecting briefly on the present and future implications of digitization, with its paradoxical blend of democratization and dehumanization, for cartography, its history and its audiences. Biobibliographien Gothaer Geowissenschaftler zusammengestellt von Franz Köhler Gotha 2008 Zum Geleit Am Anfang dieser Biobibliographien stand die Frage, wer die Autoren von Petermanns Mitteilungen waren. Die Großen der Zunft fanden und finden ihre Darsteller, ja man kann die Literatur über sie kaum noch überblicken. Indes brachten auch die Personen der zweiten und dritten Reihe wertvolle Erkenntnisse, doch über sie kann man die Lebensdaten und Lebenswege mitunter verzweifelt suchen. So sollte die Biobibliographie Abhilfe schaffen: Übersicht in der Fülle sollte ebenso gewährt werden wie der Blick in die Ästchen und Verzweigungen des Er- kenntnisfortschritts. Im Laufe der Arbeiten ist die Biobibliographie ihrer ursprünglichen Absicht entwachsen und auch das wurde aufgenommen, was zu den Mitteilungen aus Gotha in keiner Beziehung stand bzw. steht. Nach Jahren des Sam- melns umfasst die Datenbank inzwischen über 22000 Personen, für die über 84000 Literaturangaben gefunden und eingearbeitet wurden. Aus ihr wurden die hier dargestellten „Gothaer“ selektiert. Was hier so gewaltig erscheint, bedarf des kritischen Nutzers. Eine Biobibliographie wird wohl nie zu einem Ende kommen können. Ständig wächst Material zu, und der Bearbeiter entdeckte nach jahrelanger Vertrautheit mit der Materie immer wieder neue Daten, wichtige Quellen. Diese fließende Situation sollte jedoch nicht zu einer Zurückhaltung verleiten, vielmehr soll das Anliegen anderen nutzen. Daher sei es gewagt, mit dieser Biobibliogra- phie an die Öffentlichkeit zu treten. Nur so kann der Bearbeiter auf eine freundliche Resonanz und auf kritische Hinweise zur Ergänzung und Berichtigung hoffen. Am Ende sind Übersichten zu den Abkürzungen zu finden. Chapter 11 Heinrich Berghaus's Map of Human Diseases JANE R CAMERINI The first major atlas ofworldwide thematic maps was completed in 1848, consisting of some 90 maps in two volumes. Created by Heinrich Berghaus at the Geographische Kunstschule in Potsdam, the Physikalischer Atlas (PhysicalAtlas) reflected the intense interest and activity in mapping a wide range of natural phenomena in the first part of the nineteenth century. The intent of this essay is to contextualize Berghaus's 1848 map of diseases, the earliest world map in an atlas showing the geographical distribution of epidemic and endemic human diseases (Figure 1).1 This world map of human diseases is a well-known landmark in the history of medical cartography, representing both a synthesis of the early period of medical mapping and a source from which popular and increasingly focused epidemiological maps developed.2 In situating the Berghaus disease map in the context of its makers and of the history of thematic cartography, I will argue that the map participated in a major shift in how natural phenomena were studied. This shift in conceptualizing and representing the natural world has been confounded with the notion of "Humboldtian science", and I hope to begin here to put Humboldt, Berghaus, and mid-nineteenth-century medical mapping in a larger perspective.3 In spite of the interest in place, climate, and disease dating back to the Hippocratic era (450-350 BC), the use of geographic maps to enhance the understanding of disease did not emerge until the late eighteenth century, with rapid development by Jane Camerini, Department of History of Science, University of Wisconsin, Madison, WI 53706, USA. -

Against a background sketch of Petermann’s cartographical concept and working method this paper discusses a major map-series of the pre-colonial era jointly compiled with Bruno Hassenstein – the ten sheet “Karte von Inner-Afrika nach dem Stande der geographischen Kenntnis in den Jahren 1861 bis 1863”. Inaugurated as a guiding tool for the Deutsche Inner-Afrika Expedition (1861-62), propagated and organised by Petermann to salvage manuscripts of Eduard Vogel, who got lost in 1856 east of Lake Chad, however, the main purpose was to provide an up-to-date framework of all obtainable knowledge in the scale 1:2 millions supplemented by anticipated exclusive and extensive research exploration reports of the journal’s own expedition. Although the map-series remained a torso – the high hopes placed in the expedition failed with almost no cartographical gain due to inexperience and misfortune – it stands as arguably opus magnum of 19th century exploratory cartography of Central Africa drawing on many never before and never again constructed route itineraries.
