The squadron was equipped with the Supermarine Walrus and the Avro Anson. The squadron disbanded on the 22 November 1942 when it was absorbed by 282 Squadron. The squadron reformed at RAF Thornaby on 22 November 1943 with the Vickers Warwick. C ONTENTS TO J UNE 2017 AIRFIELD REVIEW The Journal of the Airfield Research Group The journal was initially called Airfield Report , then ARG Newsletter, finally becoming Airfield Review in 1985. The number of pages has varied from initially just 6, occasio- nally to up to 60 (a few issues in c.2004). Typically 44, recent journals have been 48. There appear to have been three versions of the ARG index/ table of contents produced for the magazine since its conception. The first was that by David Hall c.1986, which was a very detailed publication and was extensively cross-referenced. For example if an article contained the sentence, ‘The squadron’s flights were temporarily located at Tangmere and Kenley’, then both sites would appear in the index. It also included titles of ‘Books Reviewed’ etc Since then the list has been considerably simplified with only article headings noted. I suspect that to create a current cross-reference list would take around a day per magazine which equates to around eight months work and is clearly impractical. The second version was then created in December 2009 by Richard Flagg with help from Peter Howarth, Bill Taylor, Ray Towler and myself.

THROUGH i ADVERSITY THE HISTORY OF THE ROYAL AIR FORCE REGIMENT Kingsley M Oliver Western Desert 1941-42 ii Western Desert 1941-42 iii iv ABOUT THE AUTHOR ABOUT THE BOOK In the period between the first and second world wars the Royal Air Force - in common with many other air forces - believed that its real battles would be fought in the air and that there would be little danger of enemy attack on its airfields, installations and aircraft on the ground. In the unlikely event of such a threat developing, the Royal Air Force was confident that the British Army - with its much larger resources and its responsibility for the land battle - would always be able to come to the defence of vulnerable RAF stations. In 1940 and 1941, however, Britain’s enemies decided to change the rules of the game and their relentless attacks on airfields and aircraft on the ground rapidly eroded the effectiveness of the Royal Air Force in air combat to the extent that the loss of British air superiority in France, the Middle East and the Far East made the defeat of the British land and naval forces inevitable. The Chiefs of Staff examined every possible solution to this problem Kingsley M Oliver until - very reluctantly and as a last resort - they agreed that the only effective answer was to allow Group Captain Kingsley Oliver enlisted in the the Royal Air Force to form its own ground and anti- RAF Regiment in 1947 and after training at aircraft defence units and take proper responsibility the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst, was for its own protection against attack by enemy commissioned in the RAF Regiment in 1949.

Its history is now quite long and certainly varied. It has been domiciled in three different locations of which has been incorporated in its title at the appropriate time and generations of cadets have passed through its ranks. It has been led over the years by a succession of officers and sustained by a band of civilian supporters, many of whom were themselves former cadets of the Squadron. There have been good periods and not so good periods, and periods of adversity have produced some exceptional individuals who have gone on to do great things, both for the Squadron and the Corps. Many of these individuals are mentioned in this brief history and they are the ones who set the standards and created the Squadron’s reputation and traditions that the Cadets of the present time still aspire to follow.
