Part of a batch of 500 aircraft. 1939/40 Built by Gloster Aircraft Co Ltd at Brockworth near Gloucester as part of batch P2614-P2653. Fitted with 3-blade propeller and 1,280hp Merlin III No.119697. Now carries Merlin 33739. Probably test flown at Glosters. It should be noted however that the centre-section is possibly Hawkers – built, as is that on RAFM Hurricane I P3175. 19 Jan 40 Taken on Air Ministry Charge. To No.20 MU Aston Down (Storage Unit). 24 Feb 40 To No.6 MU Brize Norton (Storage Unit). 14 Apr 40 Allotted to No. 615 (County of Surrey) Squadron Royal Auxiliary Air Force, then based in France at Vitry-en-Artois, but temporarily at Abbeville, equipped with Gladiators. 14 Apr 40 Allotted to No.1 Repair and Salvage Unit - same day as No. 615 Squadron allocation. 15 Apr 40 Allotted to No. 607 (County of Durham) Squadron Royal Auxiliary Air Force at Abbeville, France, equipped with Gladiator aircraft, but in the process of re- equipping with Hurricanes This almost immediate reallocation from No. 615 Squadron may perhaps be explained by a possible pooling of aircraft between squadrons. Both were part of the air component of the British Expeditionary Force. 26 Apr 40 No. 607 Squadron returned to Vitry-en-Artois (NW of Arras) upon completion of conversion to Hurricanes. -

C ONTENTS TO J UNE 2017 AIRFIELD REVIEW The Journal of the Airfield Research Group The journal was initially called Airfield Report , then ARG Newsletter, finally becoming Airfield Review in 1985. The number of pages has varied from initially just 6, occasio- nally to up to 60 (a few issues in c.2004). Typically 44, recent journals have been 48. There appear to have been three versions of the ARG index/ table of contents produced for the magazine since its conception. The first was that by David Hall c.1986, which was a very detailed publication and was extensively cross-referenced. For example if an article contained the sentence, ‘The squadron’s flights were temporarily located at Tangmere and Kenley’, then both sites would appear in the index. It also included titles of ‘Books Reviewed’ etc Since then the list has been considerably simplified with only article headings noted. I suspect that to create a current cross-reference list would take around a day per magazine which equates to around eight months work and is clearly impractical. The second version was then created in December 2009 by Richard Flagg with help from Peter Howarth, Bill Taylor, Ray Towler and myself. -

Sunderland’s Blue Plaques Sunderland’s Blue Plaques Commemorative plaques, which can be found on buildings of all styles and dates, are one of the most effective means of celebrating our history and the historic environment. The City of Sunderland now has approximately 78 commemorative blue plaques spread out across the city, which mark buildings, places of interest or influential people with connections to the city. This booklet gives details of those plaques within the city. Please note this list is not exhaustive. If anyone has any information relating to other blue plaques which are not included on the list then please contact the heritage team at [email protected] A detailed map showing the location of blue plaques within the city can be found at www.sunderland.gov.uk/heritage-blue-plaques Guidelines for erecting blue plaques in Sunderland This information is intended to provide practical guidance in the process of installing a blue plaque within Sunderland. Although permission is not required from Sunderland City Council, it is good practice to seek advice and guidance before starting the process of erecting a blue plaque. Blue Plaques should be erected to commemorate historically important people or events linked to a particular place within Sunderland. There is a set of criteria (set by English Heritage) against which to consider erecting a blue plaque in order to ensure that the people or events commemorated are of sufficient local historic importance or eminence to warrant recognition. This led to the development and building of a large number of defensive structures varying from the Roman Wall to the medieval castles for which Northumberland is renowned, up to the twentieth century fortifications of pillboxes and nuclear bunkers. These structures cover a wide variety of types and design, reflecting the military engineering techniques of the time. The period covered in this book is from 1900 to 2000, the Twentieth century, a period of rapidly changing military threats and hardware. We have seen in the period the advent of the plane and the tank and the wane of the military threat from close quarters, to the development of the nuclear bomb and the long-range Cruise missile. In Tyne and Wear a large number of Military structures have been built in this period, these structures began with the redevelopment of the coastal batteries on the Tyne at the start of the century. The batteries built at both Tynemouth and South Shields were at the time “state of the art” with all new guns and emplacements. The next building period came with the onset of the First World War, when some new structures were build though little remains today. -
