  • Soundstage! Mike Bloomfield, Al Kooper, Steve Stills – Super Session 03.06.09 07:56
SoundStage! Mike Bloomfield, Al Kooper, Steve Stills – Super Session 03.06.09 07:56 February 2009 Mike Bloomfield, Al Kooper, Steve Stills - Super Session Speakers Corner/Columbia Records CS 9701 Format: LP Originally Released: 1968 Reissue Released: 2008 by Joseph Taylor [email protected] Musical Performance Recording Quality Overall Enjoyment In 1968, Al Kooper had just left Blood Sweat & Tears, the horn band he had started, and was an A&R man at Columbia Records. Guitarist Mike Bloomfield, whom Kooper had played with on Highway 61 Revisited, was also between bands, so Kooper called him up and suggested they jam in the recording studio. Two other musicians, bassist Harvey Brooks and drummer Eddie Hoh, joined them for a marathon nine-hour session (pianist Barry Goldberg sat in on a couple of tracks). The next day, Bloomfield was a no show and Kooper, in a panic, cast about for another guitarist. He was lucky enough to track down Steven Stills, whose band, Buffalo Springfield, had just split up. After another long session, Kooper had enough material to create an album. Super Session, co-credited to Bloomfield, Kooper, and Stills, cost $13,000 to record and became a gold record. Kooper had horn arrangements dubbed onto some of the tunes, but otherwise they were released as originally recorded, except for some editing on a version of Donovan’s "Season of the Witch." Bloomfield is the reason to own the record. His searing guitar work is astonishing, some of the best of his brief career. He plays with focused intensity and a powerful grasp of blues tradition.

  • Invasion Del Reggaeton LA
Invasion Del Reggaeton LA Written by Robert ID1025 Sunday, 20 March 2005 04:55 - For the first time ever, Los Angeles will be witness to the Reggaeton craze with two sold out shows at the Universal Amphitheatre in Universal City, Calif., on Saturday, April 30 and Sunday, May 1, 2005. Both shows were sold out within hours of going on sale. The two shows will feature Daddy Yankee, Don Omar, Ivy Queen, Hector El Bambino, Luny Tunes and DJ Nelson, all artists under the Machete Music umbrella. Reggaeton is the latest dance craze – a cross-culture genre of music that has hit Latin clubs in Puerto Rico; has taken a stronghold in the East Coast and has been infiltrating the West Coast the last two years. Reggaeton is influenced by Jamaican music (Reggae); salsa, merengue and by urban hip-hop music – it has been associated with the "underground" movement of urban youth in other Caribbean islands and neighboring nations, including the Dominican Republic, Peru, Venezuela, Colombia, Mexico, Panama and Nicaragua. More recently, it has surfaced in the United States, particularly in areas with large Puerto Rican concentration of other Hispanics such as New York and Miami. It"s taking on a marketing approach much like that of hip-hop at the beginning, evident by the fact that many multi-platinum hip-hop and rap artists are doing Reggaeton mixes. Radio stations in the West Coast such as Power 106 (KPWR 105.9 FM), the No. 1 Los Angeles station and hip-hop leader and Super Estrella (107.1 FM), the Latin youth market leader, are "leading the pack." The genre has also taken the U.S.

  • ROLI Raises $12.8M from Leading Investment Houses to Scale Production
Revolutionary music keyboard firm ROLI raises $12.8m from leading investment houses to scale production. May 22nd, 2014 (London, United Kingdom) London music start-up ROLI, whose award-winning product, the Seaboard GRAND, met with unexpectedly strong demand creating waiting lists of up to a year, is now poised to scale production and expand globally. ROLI today announces a $12.8m (£7.6m) Series A, one of the largest ever for a music hardware company, to fuel increased production and significant growth of its leadership and product engineering teams. The financing is led by Balderton Capital (investors in LoveFilm and Kobalt Music Group), alongside FirstMark Capital (investors in Pinterest and Shopify), Index Ventures (investors in Sonos and SoundCloud), as well as strategic investor Universal Music (the world’s leading music company). As part of the financing, Daniel Waterhouse from Balderton and Amish Jani from FirstMark join the board of directors. ROLI’s flagship product, the Seaboard GRAND, is a radical reimagining of the keyboard that enables musicians to make music in ways that were never before possible. It has earned rave reviews, hailed as “the piano of the future” (CNN) and called “influential, innovative,” and “ingenious” (The Telegraph). The Seaboard GRAND has also won multiple awards, including the SXSW Music Accelerator in 2013, and more recently the product category of the Design Museum's 2014 Design of the Year Award, beating leading international hardware companies such as Nest and GoPro. With orders from 34 countries, the Seaboard GRAND is now shipping and available for sale at www.roli.com/seaboard ROLI founder and CEO, Roland Lamb, said, “This capital will enable us to scale production capacity to meet growing demand, build our team, and accelerate our product roadmap.

Tours roll across the coun- try like mobile homes in a Florida hurricane. The most memo- rable for this magazine/bar owner were the Warped Tour and Wakestock, where such bands as Bad Religion, Billy Talent, Alexisonfire, Closet Monster, The Trews and Crowned King had audiences in mosh-pit frenzies. At Wakestock, in Wasaga Beach, Ont., Gasoline, Fox Racing, and Bluenotes rocked so hard at their two-day private cottage party that local authorities shut down the stage after Magneta Lane and Flashlight Brown. Poor Moneen didn't get to crush the eardrums of the drunken revellers. That was day one! Day two was an even bigger party with the live music again shut down. The Reason, Moneen and Crowned King owned the patio until Alexisonfire and their crew rolled into party. Gasoline would also like to thank Chuck (see cover story) and other UN officials for making sure that the boys in Sum41 made it back to the Bovine for another cocktail, despite the nearby mortar and gunfire during their Warchild excursion. Nice job. • Mike Bloomfield Pickup Phrases
The Essential Mike Bloomfield Pickup Phrases by Don Mock Welcome to this lesson series on the legendary Michael Bloomfield. No guitarist cast a larger shadow of influence on my playing career than Bloomfield. Mike was a gifted and creative Blues player who had a special magic when he played. He was the first player in the ‘60’s to incorporate melodies and sounds that were above and beyond the rock and Blues styles of the day. I can remember literally wearing out my “Butterfield” and “Super Session” albums try- ing to capture every note and nuance in his solos. Mike Bloomfield was clearly influenced by the great Bluesmen but he also listened to and was inspired by other forms of music including jazz. And it was those great little jazz touches, Mike brought to his improvised solos, that intrigued me and many others to study deeper into the world of jazz as well as Blues. And although I became known more as a Jazz and Fusion player later in my career, my musical soul still resides in the Blues and Mike Bloomfield. So, thanks for checking out this lesson and hope you gain a bit more insight into this great American guitarist whose life and career were far too short. This first installment of the Essential Mike Bloomfield demonstrates “pickup” or “setup” phrases Mike often used to begin or lead into his brilliant solos. The examples are rooted in traditional Blues and R&B and similar versions can be heard by many Blues guitar players. But Bloomfield had a special way of making even the simplest of them sound unique.
