Mike Bloomfield, Al Kooper, Steve Stills – Super Session 03.06.09 07:56 February 2009 Mike Bloomfield, Al Kooper, Steve Stills - Super Session Speakers Corner/Columbia Records CS 9701 Format: LP Originally Released: 1968 Reissue Released: 2008 by Joseph Taylor [email protected] Musical Performance Recording Quality Overall Enjoyment In 1968, Al Kooper had just left Blood Sweat & Tears, the horn band he had started, and was an A&R man at Columbia Records. Guitarist Mike Bloomfield, whom Kooper had played with on Highway 61 Revisited, was also between bands, so Kooper called him up and suggested they jam in the recording studio. Two other musicians, bassist Harvey Brooks and drummer Eddie Hoh, joined them for a marathon nine-hour session (pianist Barry Goldberg sat in on a couple of tracks). The next day, Bloomfield was a no show and Kooper, in a panic, cast about for another guitarist. He was lucky enough to track down Steven Stills, whose band, Buffalo Springfield, had just split up. After another long session, Kooper had enough material to create an album. Super Session, co-credited to Bloomfield, Kooper, and Stills, cost $13,000 to record and became a gold record. Kooper had horn arrangements dubbed onto some of the tunes, but otherwise they were released as originally recorded, except for some editing on a version of Donovan’s "Season of the Witch." Bloomfield is the reason to own the record. His searing guitar work is astonishing, some of the best of his brief career. He plays with focused intensity and a powerful grasp of blues tradition. -

flsSversity VOL. 1, NO. 5 UCIIRVINE OCTOBER 10. 1968 The Snack Bar Saga by LESLIE LINCOLN Griping students and live guitar music spread out in the gaping space in the 1st floor of the Gateway Commons Tuesday at noon, as people started using the popular old snack bar areaonce again. Meanwhile, the ASUCI Senate had the night before taken over the negotiations on establising a new snack bar in the cafeteria area of the second floor, since Chancellor Daniel Aldrich's adminis- tration decided this summer to take out the snack bar and use the1st floor for student government expansion. Ex-student senator John Krall, who with Rollin Buchanan had called the "lunch-in," said that his purpose wasn't affected by the fact that there would someday be a snack bar on the second floor. "We thought,' he said, "that sudents needed to realize how im- portant it was to have a place to get together and meet - especially the freshmen, who just assume that this university is just a place where students wanderaroundonpaths, and you meet them, maybe, if youhappen to have a class withthem." "This area is ideal as a snack bar,' John went on. "The stu- dent government shouldn't accept a compromise. Ihope thatRon (Ridgle, ASUCI President) will use all the pressure he has to re- fuse to move his offices downstairs.' Students will get together in the empty area again on Friday at noon and whenever they feel 'like it from then on. "It's not something organized,' said John. It's just people bringing en- tertainment, bringing their friends." He hopes that "allthe people who feel they were kicked out of the snack bar" willcome. -

Iconic Jazz-Rock band 'Rocks the Dock' Posted by Dick Myers On 08/01/2016 Bo Bice (c) is the new lead singer for the iconic band Blood, Sweat and Tears, who performed July 29 at Chesapeake Beach Resort and Spa. Chesapeake Beach, MD -- Next year it will have been 50 years that there’s been a band called “Blood Sweat and Tears.” Through many iterations, the group has remained constant to its originating sound--an eight-piece band with lead vocalist. They, like perhaps the more famous group Chicago, made popular what is known as “Jazz Rock,” fusing influences from rock, blues, pop, horn arrangements and of course jazz improvisation. None of the original members are with the touring group today, but they are still as strong as ever as witnessed by a rousing performance Friday night, July 29 for the Chesapeake Beach Resort and Spa’s Rock the Dock summer concert series. Blood, Sweat and Tears most prominent period was in the late 60’s after lead singer David Clayton Thomas replaced founding member Al Kooper. The highly-popular album “Blood, Sweat and Tears,” released in 1969, spawned three hits which all reached Number 2 on the Billboard charts: “You Made Me So Very Happy,” “Spinning Wheel,” and “And When I Die.” The only other single to crack to Top 20 was “Hi—De--Ho,” at Number 14 in 1970. That was penned by Carole King, whose grandson is now a member of the band. Blood, Sweat and Tears’ new lead singer, Bo Bice, is pushing the band back into prominence again. -

Paul began playing at age 12, on an acoustic guitar that his dad had “broken in” singing pro-labor and “peoples’ songs” while performing at union rallies and concerts in the late ‘40’s. An entirely self-taught player, Paul used as his early models the music in his dad’s 78 and LP collection- records by Lightnin’ Hopkins, John Lee Hooker, Blind Willie Johnson, Leadbelly, Uncle Dave Macon, Woody Guthrie, Jimmy Driftwood, and Flatt and Scruggs, as well as jazz and gospel discs by Dinah Washington, Sarah Vaughan, The Staple Singers, and Mahalia Jackson. Soon after hearing the music coming out of bars on Chicago’s South Side, howev- er, he single-mindedly started playing electric guitar, trying to evoke the sounds of Buddy Guy and Otis Rush. His career began at age 18 “in the trenches” of Pepper’s Lounge, the 1815 Club, Theresa’s, and other haunts, as a sideman to Otis Rush, Magic Sam, Junior Wells and other fixtures of the Chicago blues scene. Gigs, tours and recordings followed, with legends like John Lee Hooker, Earl Hooker, Lightnin’ Hopkins, Sam Lay, Pops Staples, Donny Hathaway and Lightnin’ Slim. During this time he appeared on the milestone recording “Fathers and Sons” featuring Muddy Waters, Paul Butterfield and Mike Bloomfield and also played on “The London Howlin’ Wolf Sessions” LP, fea- turing Eric Clapton, Steve Winwood and members of the Rolling Stones. In 1971, needing a “spiritual battery recharge” he made the move to rural Vermont. The idea was to go as far from his “urban music roots” as possible- he bought a tiny piece of land in the shadow of breathtaking Camel’s Hump Mountain, built a geodesic dome, and attempted to live “like normal folks who didn’t live the music life 24 hours a day”.
