• U.S. Open Golf Jack Nicklaus Some of Henry Opiekun’s fondest URI memories revolve around athletics. He took two intramural officiating courses with Britt Piez who was a physical education instructor at URI and that began his long career -- He is most proud of being inducted into the Rhode Island High School Basketball Officials Hall of Fame and of having the honor to officiate at three state final games for girls’ high school basketball at the Ryan Center. “Being on the floor of the Ryan Center for the very first state games played there was a highlight for me.” -Henry Opiekun ’71 Sports Champions of 1971:

I saved many letters, and among my favorites are the ones from URI days, especially the summers, when we’d exchange experiences and ideas. While I was a sophomore at the time, I went to the dance anyway with no agenda whatsoever! Shortly after arriving, one of the prettiest girls I’d ever seen walked by.
