Agadir Directeur de Thèse Résumé La gestion et la préservation des formations steppiques à base d’Acacias sahariens (Acacia tortilis subsp raddiana) nécessitent au préalable une évaluation et une caractérisation de leur variabilité. Cette approche se base sur des études pluridisciplinaires faisant appel à l’analyse de la diversité des caractères adaptatifs (caractères agro-morphologiques) et neutres (marqueurs génétiques). Dans ce contexte, la présente étude vise à explorer à l’aide de marqueurs agro-morphométriques et moléculaires, la variabilité génétique des Acacias sahariens du Maroc. Cette étude a été menée en trois parties : i) Variabilité de la germination des graines collectées sur six provenances par l’utilisation de trois traitements (mécanique, chimique et thermique) avec un suivi de la cinétique de croissance au stade plantule. ii) Variabilité de neuf caractères morpho-métriques liés aux fruits (gousses) par une étude comparative au niveau des descendances (familles de demi-frères), des provenances (Agdz, N’Koub, Tazarine, Mcissi, Tata, Tissint, Foum Zguid, Guelmim, Msied et Assa) et des saisons (deux années d’étude). -

Botanical name Acacia merrallii F.Muell., Proc. Linn. Soc. New South Wales ser. 2, 5: 18 (1890) The botanical name commemorates Edwin Merrall who collected the type specimen from near Lake Brown in 1890 (see Hall 1984 for biographical details). Common name Merrall’s Wattle. Characteristic features Shrubs low and spreading. Phyllodes short and broad, smooth, thick and sub-fleshy, minutely hairy when young but glabrous with age, obscurely 1-nerved on each face, apical point distinct. Heads globular. Pods sub-terete, small, strongly curved to irregularly coiled, dark brown to black. Aril bright orange (rarely yellow), conspicuous and partially sheathing the seed. Description Habit. Low-domed or flat-topped, multi-stemmed shrubs (0.2-)0.3-1.5(-2.5) m tall, often +/- circular in plane view and the dense crown spreading 1-4 m wide. Bark. Smooth and grey from base of main stems to the branchlets. New shoots. Grey-green due to a dense layer of hairs. Branchlets. Usually minutely hairy. Phyllodes. Variable in shape and size, obliquely obovate to elliptic-orbicular or oblong-elliptic, rarely ovate, usually 8-25 mm long and 5-17 mm wide with l:w = 1.2-3, smooth, thick and sub-fleshy, green, grey-green or sub-glaucous, finely appressed- hairy when young but becoming glabrous with age; with 1 obscure longitudinal nerve (midrib) on each face, lateral nerves +/- absent; marginal nerves prominent and yellowish; apices ending in a small, curved or straight point which varies from innocuous to +/- pungent; gland situated on the upper margin of the phyllode (on its lower half), not raised. -

Suggested local native plant species for Superb Fairy-wren habitat Extract from the report, Superb Fairy-Wren Habitat in Glebe and Forest Lodge, S. Stevens, The Glebe Society, Sydney, 2008. The plants listed are thought to have been indigenous to inner-western Sydney prior to white settlement. Emphasis in this list is on plants that should be fairly easily obtainable, but a few that may be difficult to obtain at present, such as Epacrids and some Peas, and plants such as Epacrids have traditionally been difficult to propagate, have been included to indicate the variety of plants that are suitable for Superb Fairy-wren habitat, and with a view that these plant species may be available in the future. Indeed, highlighting them as suitable small bird habitat may influence some nurseries to add them to their stocklists. Common Name Coastal Umbrella Bush Family Fabaceae Distribution Widespread in coastal and near coastal areas of southern Australia from Albany, W.A., through S.A. to the Vic. border, extending inland to Dimboola, western Vic. and Three Springs, W.A. Description Open to subdense shrub usually 1–2.5 m high, to 2.5 m wide, glabrous. Branchlets commonly dark red-brown, often lightly pruinose. Phyllodes subdistant, ascending to erect, narrowly linear, straight, 3–8 (–9) cm long, 1–4 (–5) mm wide, rounded-obtuse, with minute and ±central mucro, ±thick, finely wrinkled when dry, subglaucous to dark green; midrib not prominent; glands 2 or 3, with lowermost 3–14 mm above pulvinus, and distal glands smaller with one at base of mucro. Inflorescences 2 or 3-headed racemes; raceme axes 1–7 (–9) mm long; basal bracts caducous but bract scars persistent; peduncles 2–6 mm long; heads globular, subdense, 16–22- flowered, golden. Flowers 5-merous; sepals united into a ±truncate calyx. Pods ±erect, ±submoniliform, to 7 cm long, 4–5 mm wide, crustaceous, breaking readily at constrictions, commonly dark brown. -

Abstract This part is the first in a series that will describe the biological survey of the Eastern Goldfields District of Western Australia. It deals specifically with the background, aims and objectives of the survey and outlines the methods used to document vegetation, soils, flora and verteprate fauna at numerous sample sites representative of this heterogeneous region. The Eastern Goldfields District (266,000 km') was selected for survey for the following reasons because: there had been no previous detailed survey of the biota of the District, which is a region of considerable interest in that it lies between the mesic South West and arid Eremaean regions; extensive areas of vegetation have remained relatively unmodified since European settlement; the need to evaluate the adequacy of existing conservation reserve systems; pressure to release more land for clearing for cereal crops in south-western and southern parts of the district.
