Golden Eagles Men’s Soccer 2 HEAD COA ch After guiding the Golden Eagles to their fifth consecutive winning season and a national No. 1 regular-season ranking for the second straight year in 2010, Chris Chamides returns for his ninth season as the head coach of the men’s soccer program at Cal State L.A. Chamides led the Golden Eagles to a 9-7-1 overall record in 2010 and to the brink of an unprecedented fifth straight trip to the four-team California Collegiate Athletic Association Championship Tournament. Cal State L.A. was ranked No. 1 in the nation for two weeks early in the season before a rash of injuries slowed the team down. During the season, the Golden Eagles beat defending West Region champion Cal State Dominguez Hills twice in a four-day span in October and also posted a road shutout win over eventual West Region champion Chico State. Cal State L.A. once again flourished with its trademark stingy defense and limited opponents to one goal or fewer in 12 of 17 matches. It was a solid follow-up to a historic season in 2009 when Chamides led the Golden Eagles to an 18-4-1 overall record and to the CCAA South Division championship. Cal State L.A. earned its first-ever No. 1 national ranking during the season and earned the No. 1 seed in the NCAA Division II West Region. The Golden Eagles were ranked seventh in the nation in the last regular-season poll. The 18 wins were the second-most in the program’s history and the most since 1981. Cal State L.A. hosted the NCAA Division II West Regional and beat Cal State San Bernardino, 5-3, in an exciting semi-final contest before dropping a tough 1-0 decision to Cal State Dominguez Hills in the championship match. Chamides was named the CCAA Coach of the Year for the second time in men’s soccer in 2009 and he has also been awarded the conference’s top honor for the women’s team in each of the past two years. While at Cal State L.A., he has quickly transformed the Golden Eagles into one of the top programs in the West Region. Chris Chamides Chamides has led the Golden Eagles to an 89-56-17 overall record in his first eight years, including a 64-30-12 mark, four trips to the CCAA Championship Tournament and three appearances in the NCAA playoffs over the past five years. Chamides has Head Coach guided the Golden Eagles into the regional championship match in all three NCAA appearances. The 64 wins over the past five seasons are the most over a five-year span for the program since 1981-85. Chamides Quick Facts Cal State L.A. has earned 33 All-CCAA, 17 All-Region and six All-America awards during Chamides’ tenure. That total includes a pair of CCAA Freshman of the Year honors and one CCAA Newcomer of the Year award. Overall Record The Golden Eagles had a program record four All-Americans in 2009. The Golden Eagles recorded a 13-5-4 overall record in 2008 and were ranked 14th in the nation in the final NSCAA poll. CCAA Coach of the Year Cal State L.A. was ranked as high as No. 4 in the nation during the regular season and spent the last nine weeks rated in the 2 (2004, 2009) national Top-25. The Golden Eagles were 9-3-2 in conference play and advanced to the CCAA Championship Tournament for a third straight Region Coach of the Year year. Cal State L.A. lost a hard-fought contest to top-seed Sonoma State in the first round, but the Golden Eagles got their 1 (2006) revenge in the first round of the NCAA Tournament the next week, ousting Sonoma State on penalty kicks to advance to the regional championship game. It was an impressive follow-up to the sensational 2006 season when the Golden Eagles enjoyed their best year since 1992 NCAA Tournament Appearances and finished the campaign ranked 18th in the nation. Cal State L.A. captured the CCAA South Division title and advanced to 3 (2006, 2008, 2009) the NCAA regional championship game. Chamides was named the 2006 NSCAA West Region Coach of the Year after guiding the Golden Eagles to 13-8-2 overall CCAA Division Championships record.
