After guiding the Golden Eagles to their fifth consecutive winning season and a national No. 1 regular-season ranking for the second straight year in 2010, Chris Chamides returns for his ninth season as the head coach of the men’s soccer program at Cal State L.A. Chamides led the Golden Eagles to a 9-7-1 overall record in 2010 and to the brink of an unprecedented fifth straight trip to the four-team California Collegiate Athletic Association Championship Tournament. Cal State L.A. was ranked No. 1 in the nation for two weeks early in the season before a rash of injuries slowed the team down. During the season, the Golden Eagles beat defending West Region champion Cal State Dominguez Hills twice in a four-day span in October and also posted a road shutout win over eventual West Region champion Chico State. Cal State L.A. once again flourished with its trademark stingy defense and limited opponents to one goal or fewer in 12 of 17 matches. Cal State L.A. earned its first-ever No. 1 national ranking during the season and earned the No. 1 seed in the NCAA Division II West Region. The Golden Eagles were ranked seventh in the nation in the last regular-season poll. The 18 wins were the second-most in the program’s history and the most since 1981. Jesse Owens Stadium is home to the Cal State L.A. soc- cer, cross country and track and field teams. With permanent bleacher seating for 5,000 spectators, it also hosts many other events throughout the year, including the University’s commencement ceremony each June. In preparation for the 1984 Summer Olympics held in Los Angeles, Cal State L.A. was select- ed as one of six sites to construct a world-class training track. The groundbreaking ceremony was held on January 29, 1982. The initial surface selected by the L.A. Organizing Committee for the track was “Recaflex S.” This surface, known for its versatility, is hard enough to record fast times but still soft enough to allow for a regular training regiment. The track was officially dedicated on May 22, 1983, during the L.A. Regional Championships of the ARCO Jesse Owens Games.
