5 2007 Seawolves 2007 Season Preview For most teams, a 28-23 record would be cause for a pat on the back and congratulations. At Sonoma State, however, where winning CCAA Championships and moving on to the NCAA playoffs has become common place, expecations are just a bit higher. With this in mind, the Sonoma State coaching staff, has assembled a squad that they feel can compete in the highly competitive CCAA and beyond.

Infielders Power hitter Tyler Wightman, last year’s leader with ten home runs, returns and should see plenty of time at first base and designated hitter. Eli Rimes and Gino Lavezzo will also get their at bats at first. At third, Travis Babin, who .277 as a freshman last season, should continue to improve. Expect a new middle of the infield, led by the slick fielding David Adler, a transfer from Moorpark JC. At second base, Robert Walden and Dave Herman could split duties, while Cal State Northridge transfer Chase McGuire looks to fill in at multiple positions.

Outfielders B.J. Collom highlights the list of returners in the center field. Collom batted .348 with nine home runs and 46 RBI’s on his way to All-CCAA Honorable Mention honors a year ago. Speedy Nick Nosti will look to replace All-Region pick Zack Pace in right field and at the top of the lineup. The powerful Tyrese McDaniel and Jason Buhagiar should share time in left field. The Seawolves will enjoy a wealth of depth in the , adding Matt Wilhite, Brandon Zenimura, and Derek Harms, any of which could play there way into some serious playing time.

Catchers The Seawolves have plenty of bodies behind the plate, but they are waiting to see who will emerge as the starter. Trevor Howell will probably split time at first, designated hitter, and . The Monterey native batted .306 with five homers last year. A trio of newcomers, Konrad Thieme, David Boogard, andIan Bridges, will also have their chances behind the dish. All are capable receivers and talented hitters.

Pitchers Three quarters of last year’s starting rotation return in Bryan Oland, Brent Lysander, and Matt Bush. The fourth, Alberto Rolon looks like he might be shelved for the year with an arm injury. In SSU’s big three, the Brent Lysander Seawolves have the experience and talent to shut down any opponent. Glen Wood, who shows flashes of briliance last season, could also play his way into the rotation. Paige Dumont, a former SSU star, returns for his senior season and should see time out of the pen. Kevin Asselin and Matt Means, two CCAA Pre-Season Poll returners, will also be counted on in relief. They will work with a quality group of newcomers including, John Bonifacini, Lek Cole, Arthur McHenry, Nick O’Brien, Kenny Cook, Matt Garnett, Taylor Lewis, Devon 1. Chico State (6) Kreyenhagen, Josh Priest, Gary Scott, and Scott Wischnack. 2. UC San Diego 3. Cal State L.A. (3) Schedule 4. SONOMA STATE As usual, the 2006 SSU baseball schedule features some of the top teams in the region. SSU will make a 5. Cal State San Bernardino trip to Phoenix to take on Grand Canyon for games that could hold regional implications. Western Oregon, 6. Cal Poly Pomona (1) a West Region heavyweight the last couple of years, will play two games against SSU. A strong show- 7. Cal State Dominguez Hills ing these against these two will go along way to re-establishing the Seawolves as a power in the West 8. Cal State Stanislaus Region. 9t. San Francisco State 9t. Cal State Monterey Bay As opposed to last year when the Seawolves played just 19 home games, Seawolf Diamond will play host (championship votes) to a whopping 39 games in ‘07. That is, of course, if the weather cooperates.

The CCAA figures to be tough once again. Chico State picked up the No. 3 national ranking from the ABCA. The Wildcats won the West Region championship for the third year in a row in 2006 and came within one strike of a national championship. Cal State L.A. and UC San Diego should also be pounding it out with the Seawolves for spots in the CCAA and NCAA Tournaments.

36 Seawolf Diamond Home Of The Nestled along a row of redwood trees, Seawolf Diamond is one of the best places in Northern California to watch a baseball game. There is a certain ‘old-time charm’ that seems to rub off on specta- tors who spend a sunny afternoon watching the Seawolves.

Two years ago, SSU installed several rows of box seats that were purchased from the old County Stadium in Milwaukee. Another seating option, one popular with students, involves spreading a blanket out on the grass berm that wraps itself around the field.

While Seawolf Diamond may be comfortable to fans, the place has been quite the opposite to opposing teams. Over the years, the Sonoma State baseball team has enjoyed a definite home field advantage when playing in front of their faithful. Since 1996, the Seawolves have a 189-76 record when playing at home, a winning percentage of .713.

Seawolf Diamond The playing surface is generally regarded as one of the best in Divi- sion II and the SSU coaching staff goes to great lengths to make sure it stays that way.
