The dean of head coaches at SSU and among baseball coaches in the conference, Goelz has built Sonoma State into one of the most respected programs in the nation. With a career record of 689-466-5, Goelz is the winningest coach in any sport in SSU history. He is the 13th winningest active Division II coach and is 28th all-time. After taking over a Sonoma State team that had won just 50 games over the previous six seasons combined, Goelz wasted little time turning the school into a winner. Following an eighteen-win season in 1986 (the most Career Record wins in school history), Goelz delivered the school’s first winning campaign in 1987 with a 30-20 record. Winning Year Overall Pct Conf seasons have become common place ever since, with 17 in his last 20 seasons. 2006 28-23-1 .548 17-15 Since 1999, Sonoma State has a record of 308-186-2, one of the best records in the country at any level. Coach 2005 25-30 .455 19-19 Goelz has also seen over 60 of his players sign professional contracts since his arrival in 1986 and in the past 2004 39-28 .582 25-15 six years, 24 players have been drafted or signed to play professionally. Baseball insiders certainly took notice 2003 46-15-1 .750 27-11 in 2004 when SSU had four players taken in the first eleven rounds of the Major League Baseball draft. Their 2002 41-24 .631 20-20 draft performance ranked among the top Division I schools in the nation in terms of early round draft picks and 2001 50-17 .746 29-7 they led all Division II teams with four draftees. 2000 39-23 .629 25-15 1999 40-26 .606 21-15 In addition to their presence in the professional ranks, Goelz’s former players have continued to make a differ- 1998 33-21 .611 23-12 ence in their communities both on and off the field. Dozens have gone on to coaching jobs at high schools and colleges throughout Northern California and the nation. 1997 37-20 .649 25-10 1996 30-26-1 .535 16-19 Goelz has seen nine of his players go on to earn All-American honors and has coached five conference player 1995 25-28 .472 17-18 of the year award winners. Goelz, himself, has earned conference coach of the year honors five times (1990, 1994 23-25 .479 14-21 1991, 1992, 1998, 2001). 1993 33-21 .611 21-14 1992 32-17-1 .650 23-7 A pitcher during his playing days at San Francisco State, Goelz went on to be an assistant at San Francisco 1991 29-14-1 .670 21-7 State to Al Figone from 1977-78 and to Orrin Freeman from 1979-82. Freeman is currently the Assistant General 1990 35-17 .673 21-9 Manager of the Florida Marlins. During his time at SFSU, the Gators enjoyed their greatest success, ranking in 1989 28-18 .609 20-9 the national top twenty four times and participating in the NCAA West Regionals on three different occasions. From 1984-85, Goelz was the varsity baseball coach at Albany High School. After a third-place finish in 1984, 1988 28-21 .571 15-13 Goelz led his team to the Alameda County Athletic League championship, finishing the season with an 18-8 mark 1987 30-20 .600 18-12 and a final East Bay ranking of 12th. 1986 18-32 .360 9-21 Career 689-466-5 .596 426-289 Goelz resides in Rohnert Park with his wife Delores and sons John (10) and Matthew (9).
