2008 Chico State Women's Soccer 3 2008 Women's Season Outlook Five Seniors on Quest to Raise Another Banner Chico State seniors Anjie Goulding, Stephanie Insler, Melissa Lindsay, Katie McIntosh, and Abby Stretch have already seen and accomplished much during their careers. They’ve made three straight postseason appearances, earned a pair of NCAA Championship Tournament berths, raised two California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) North Division banners, and last season raised the program’s first-ever CCAA Championship banner. Now their job is to help raise even more banners for the program, while also help- ing to raise the 18 new players joining the program for the 2008 season. Eighth-year head coach Kim Sutton, who last season earned CCAA Coach of the Year honors for the second time in four years, believes the incoming class has a future at least as bright as her five talented seniors. “The talent just keeps getting better every year,” said Sutton. “We’re turning kids away in the recruiting process that we would have been thrilled to have two or three years ago. The talent level seems to improve with each incoming class.” As a result, only the most talented of Sutton’s prior recruiting classes have persevered. That talent will be crucial to this team’s success, along with the leadership and experience they provide. “We have a solid group of returners who have given at least four years to our program and their leadership has been outstanding,” said Sutton. “Katie McIntosh and Angie Goulding give us leadership in the back. Abby Stretch and Stephanie Insler will bring that to the middle of the field. Melissa Lindsay provides the leader- ship for our forwards. They all came in really fit and set a great tone for the season.” That tone is different tone from last season, when the focal point of the campaign was a CCAA title. This time around they’re gunning for the program’s first NCAA Championship Tournament victory. “They’ve all proven to be determined to not only repeat as CCAA Champions, but also to advance beyond the first round of the NCAA Tour- nament,” said Sutton. “We’ve broken up our goals into stages – preseason, non-conference, conference, NCAA Tournament – and our final goal, what we’re calling our big hairy goal, is to reach the Final Four.” That quest undoubtedly hit a speed bump with defender Molly Downtain’s off-season knee injury. The Wildcats were already attempting to recover from Senior midfielder the losses of 2007 CCAA Player of the Year Katherine Bagwell, fellow All- Stephanie Insler Region players Ashley Gunther and Whitney MacDonald, and goalkeeper Kari Gonzales (the most decorated keeper in Chico State women’s soccer history). However, Sutton believes that a number of capable players are ready to step in and fill those roles. Gonzales chose to stick around to be the team’s goal- keeper coach and has to be happy with what she’s seen so far from returner Natalie Bensky and redshirt freshman

Lauren Vance. Bensky has some solid credentials. In limited action over the last two seasons, she posted a goals against average of 1.04 and saves percentage of .727. Meanwhile, Vance has also played well “The talent just keeps getting in the preseason. “It’s so nice to have two solid goalkeepers,” said Sutton. “We’re better every year. We’re turn- really pleased with both of them.” ing kids away in the recruiting After notching just two goals and two assists over her first two seasons in the program, Lindsay exploded onto the scene last season process that we would have and matched Bagwell for the team lead in goals with seven. She’s been thrilled to have two or poised to make another leap forward as a senior. Stretch starts the season with 11 career goals and six career assists. She’ll join Insler three years ago...” and Lindsay to form a talented and experienced trio in the middle of the field. -Head Coach Kim Sutton Fellow returners Ali Sward (four goals last season), Emese Grek (three goals last season), Ashley Perlman and Molly McFadden will add scoring punch, along with transfer Brittany Doty, redshirt fresh- man Lisa Webster, and true freshmen Jaclyn Thomas and Dara Karnofsky. Sophomore Kelsey Ikemoto, true freshman Blake Lopes, and University of Hawaii transfer Mallory Maughan will likely all see time as midfielders. “We are so deep,” said Sutton. “We probably don’t have as much experience back, but we are even deeper than we were last year, which is hard to believe because that was one of our strengths.” Sutton is especially excited about the play of Sward, Doty, and Thomas thus far. “We expected Ali to be a big contributor this season and she has risen to the challenge,” said Sutton. “Jackie is a very crafty, speedy, and aggressive attacker. Doty (who spent the past two seasons at Arizona State) is playing like someone who just spent two seasons in the Pac-10. Her maturity, pace, and athleticism are all fantastic. She’s also tireless on the field. Every bit of her being wants to be scoring goals, and she has the ability to do it.” Doty started 14 games for the Sun Devils as a freshman and finished second on the team with four goals. Goulding, an All-West Region performer, and McIntosh will lead the defensive unit. Redshirt freshman Kasey Wall, sophomore Carly Atkins, and junior Katie Kause are also potential starters. “Last year we played at least four subs on a regular basis and it gave us a real lift,” said Sutton. “This year that number may grow to five or six. There are a number of young, talented players on the team who might be great sometimes and might struggle other times. But we have enough talented players that someone will be ready to give us a lift when we need it.” That lift may be all they need to raise a brand new kind of banner – one that reads “2008 West Region Champions.”

'Cats Picked to Win 2nd Straight CCAA Title by Coaches The Chico State women's soccer team is the preseason favorite to win the California Collegiate Athletic Association title, according to a poll of the conference head coaches. The Wildcats claimed the first CCAA title in the program's history last season, knocking off Cal State L.A. on penalty kicks in the CCAA Championship Tournament title game. Four of 11 coaches believe the Wildcats will win the Conference Championship Tournament title. Cal State Dominguez Hills received three votes, while UC San Diego and Sonoma State garnered two apiece. Coaches are not allowed to vote for their own squads. Chico State tallied eight of 11 first-place votes the coaches cast to predict the winner of the CCAA's North Division as well, a feat the Wildcats have accomplished three times in the last four seasons.

Kim Sutton - Head Coach Kim Sutton, embarking on her eighth season as Chico State's head coach and her 14th at the NCAA Division II level, has firmly established herself as one of the top coaches in the nation. Sutton has led the Wildcats to four straight CCAA Championship Tournament finals, three NCAA Championship Tournament appearances and three CCAA North Division crowns in the last four seasons, and led the Wildcats to the program's first CCAA title last season. The CCAA's Coach of the Year in 2004 and 2007, Sutton boasts a career winning percentage of .597, the 32nd highest in the history of women's Division II soccer, and she ranks 34th all-time with 133 victories at the Division II level. Over half of those victories have come during Chico State's current streak of six straight double-digit win seasons. The Wildcats are 78-42-22 under her care. Still, Sutton is excited to take her program to an even higher level. "We've done some special things here over the last few seasons and I'm very proud of what we've accomplished," said Sutton. "The next step is to get out of this very tough region and compete for a national title." With 14 letterwinners returning, including five starters, the Wildcats could be poised for another history-making sea- son. They open the season ranked No. 24 in the nation. Sutton has already won 205 matches during Kim Sutton's Division II Coaching Record head coaching stints at Santa Rosa Junior Col- lege, Humboldt State, and now Chico State. Petra Kowalski - Assistant Coach Petra Kowalski, who is also the head coach of the San Francisco Nighthawks of the Women's Premier Soccer League, begins her second season as the Wildcats' head assistant coach. Kowalski began her coaching career as an assistant coach at her alma mater, Claremont-Mudd-Scripps College during the 2005 season. As a goalkeeper there, Kowalski earned a trio of All-Conference honors. She also played professionally in Iceland before returning to the to play for the San Francisco Nighthawks. She was the head junior varsity coach at Sacred Heart Prep School in Atherton during the 2006-07 sea- son, and at Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy of La Cañada for two seasons prior to that.

Kari Gonzales - Goalkeeper Coach Goalkeeper coach Kari Gonzales, the holder of every important career goalkeeping record in Chico State history, is hoping to mold a few record breakers herself beginning this season, her first as a coach. Gonzales wrapped up her playing career with the Wildcats following the 2007 season. An All-West Re- gion and All-CCAA selection as a player, Gonzales amassed 40 wins, a 0.63 goals against average, and 31 shutouts – all Chico State records – in three years as a starter. Her 0.50 goals against average as a senior is also a Chico State best. 6 2008 Chico State Women's Soccer Player Profiles

2008 Chico State Men's Soccer 27 2008 Men's Season Outlook

The Goal is Goals in Year One of Restrepo's Run When coaches are asked about goals for their upcoming season they usually respond with glazed over eyes and cliché answers. New Chico State men’s soccer coach Felipe Restrepo is certainly an exception. That’s because scoring lots of goals is one of his main goals, and the thought of scoring goals sends the first-year, first-time collegiate head coach into a state of exuberance. “I like to go at the goal,” Restrepo is fond of saying. Just the third Chico State men’s soccer coach in the last 32 years, Restrepo takes over for Mike O’Malley, who resigned after 12 seasons at the helm. The cupboard was left far from bare, though Restrepo will be the first to acknowledge that there’s much to be done if the Wildcats are going to move from the middle of the California Collegiate Association (CCAA) North Division pack to the top of it. “There are some good blocks to build on, but we also have some work to do to get this program where we want it to be,” said Restrepo, who served as UC Davis’ head assistant coach for seven seasons prior to being hired at Chico State. The senior trio of Byron Salata, Nic Munley and Zac Crim are three of the building blocks Restrepo is referring to. He’s also excited about the team’s three returning juniors - Adam Raish, Evan Armstrong, and Michael Keohane. Together, Restrepo hopes they’ll provide leadership both on and off the field for the group of 17 newcomers that includes 12 true freshmen. So far, they haven’t disappointed. “I’m excited that the older guys not only provide us with strong leader- ship, but they’re talented as well,” said Restrepo. “Our three seniors have all shown the leadership and consistency we’ve needed and the junior class is really exciting. “Traditionally good, healthy programs are winning with their juniors and seniors and also bringing along a strong group of young players. The veterans and other experienced players we brought in allow us to slowly bring the younger play- ers along. They can certainly help us now and I expect that some of them will, but they Senior forward won’t have to feel like our success is completely dependent on their performance.” Zac Crim The Wildcats’ veteran presence will be felt most on defense, an aspect of the game in which they’ve traditionally excelled. That trend should continue with Salata and Raish back to anchor the back third, along with junior goalkeeper Michael Keohane, who boasted a 0.91 goals against average through eight games last season before missing the rest of the season after an injury. Ross Judge and redshirt freshman Jacob Darr should also see important minutes in the back third, along with freshmen Mike Strobel and Chris Akwaja, and sophomore transfer Ryan Struckmeyer. Struckmeyer is also a name that comes up when Restrepo starts to talk about attacking the goal. In fact, the subject inspires Restrepo enough that he mentions 11 players he believes have the ability to get the ball into the back of the net this season. “I just like to play an attractive style for the players and the fans. Team defense is important, but scoring goals is probably the hardest thing to do 28 2008 Chico State Men's Soccer 2008 Men's Season Outlook in the college game,” explained Restrepo. “Fortunately, we have a group here – a good mix of veterans and new guys – that I think have the ability to put the ball in the back of the net.” Crim and Armstrong are two of those players, along with fellow returners Zach Bradford, Kevin Gibson, and Judge. Re- strepo is thrilled about a trio of junior newcomers with goal-scoring ability – Kyle Conrad, Benjamin Moukoko, and Kyle Crain. Conrad has spent the past two seasons playing club soccer, but prior to that, he was a First-Team All-League player at Arcadia High School. Moukoko notched 13 goals and a pair of assists as a Junior College All-American last season at Foothill JC. Crain saw action in 22 games in the Pac-10 at San “I just like to play an attractive style Diego State between his freshman and sophomore seasons. “These guys are all very skilled, exciting players,” said for the players and the fans. Team Restrepo. defense is important, but scoring Freshman Aren Dawkins, a sprinter on Chico State’s track team, and San Diego City College transfer Ryan Nevarez are goals is probably the hardest thing to two more players with offensive skills that have Restrepo do in the college game. Fortunately, wound up. Crim (three goals and two assists last season), and Arm- we have a group here – a good mix strong (four goals in 2006) are expected to be the stabilizing of veterans and new guys – that I forces on offense, with the newcomers also looking to stake think have the ability to put the ball their claim to a starting role. Restrepo also helped to ensure the program’s stability by in the back of the net.” retaining the services of head assistant coach Donny Ribaudo and hiring former Chico State All-American goalkeeper -Head Coach Felipe Restrepo Dominik Jakubek to coach the goalkeepers. “Dom and Donny represent all of the good things that this program is about. They were very good players on good teams and they’re an important link to the storied past of Chico State soccer,” said Restrepo. “The players tune into them because it was not long ago that they were playing at a very high level. So between the three of us, we cover a lot of areas.” One of those areas is in the classroom. Restrepo has made it very clear that he has high expectations for his athletes off the playing field as well. Thus far, he’s been happy with what he’s seen. “This is a great group of student-athletes. The guys who are coming back have been very good in the classroom and the new ones are also committed to their academic pursuits. In my experience, players who take care of business in the classroom tend to do the same thing on the field,” said Restrepo. He’ll soon find out if that’s true in the case of this team. Restrepo, for one, seems to feel pretty good about things. “For my first season, this is a pretty talented group. I’m excited. If we can gel quickly and stay healthy we can accomplish some real good things.” They’ll begin by getting started on one of their biggest goals – to score a lot of goals.

Coaches Pick Wildcats to Finish 2nd in CCAA's North Division The Chico State men's soccer team is picked to finish second in the CCAA North Division in 2008, according to a poll of the conference head coaches. Those coaches are apparently expecting the Wildcats, who finished 5-9-0 in the CCAA last season and third in the North, to take a step forward under first-year head coach Felipe Restrepo. The Wildcats are picked to finish behind Sonoma State, which is also the favorite to win the Conference Championship Tournament. Humboldt State and Cal State Monterey Bay follow Chico State in the poll. Cal State Dominguez Hills is a heavy favorite to win the South Division, receiving nine of 11 first-place votes.
