After an eighteen-win season in 1986 (the most wins 1994 23-25 14-21 in school history), Goelz delivered the school’s first winning campaign in 1993 33-21 21-14 1987 with a 30-20 record.Winning seasons have become common place 1992 32-17-1 23-7 ever since, with 16 in his last 19 seasons. 1991 29-14-1 21-7 1990 35-17 21-9 1989 28-18 20-9 Since 1999, Sonoma State has a record of 280-163-1, one of the best 1988 28-21 15-13 records in the country at any level. 5 2006 Season Preview While the 2005 season may not have been up to par with the recent success enjoyed by the Sonoma State baseball team, expectations are again high in 2006 as the Seawolves will look to capture their fourth CCAA championship and a trip to the NCAATournament for the sixth time in nine years. For the most part it will be a new core leading the Seawolves into battle.

Infielders Carlos Pasillas, Kevin Dahl, David Herman, and Brian Colip highlight the list of returners in the infield. Pasil- las was third on the team last year with six home runs. Dahl batted an even .300 and Herman and Colip provided steady defense up the middle. T.J. Drotleff, a transfer from Dallas Baptist and Jason Searle, who played atVanguard (NAIA), should also be used quite often. Coach Goelz is also excited about the talent he has uncovered in freshmenTravis Babin and Rob Learned as well as transfers Ryan Johnson andTyler Wightman..The addition of these top flight transfers on offense gives hope after the team’s batting average dipped to .279 last season, the lowest mark since 1994.

Outfielders The core is led by returning All-Conference selection Zack Pace. Last year Pace led the team with a .356 average and broke the school record with an on-base percentage of .498. A speedy leadoff hitter, Pace will set again set the table for the Seawolf offense. After year spent ironing out eligibility issues after a transfer, senior Oscar Mendoza will move into the lineup in 2006. B.J. Collom a transfer from Gavilan JC AThird Team All-CCAA pick in 2004, Evan Anderson did not should see plenty of action in centerfield. Also, look out for high profile freshman Dexter English, who was a play for the Seawolves last season. He hopes to regain his spot as one of the top backstops in the conference in ‘06. 22nd round draft pick of the last year out of Encinal High School. MattWilhite .270 in 74 at-bats last season and hopes to improve on those numbers. Gordon Lake and Brandon Zenimura could also see time in the outfield.

Catchers Evan Anderson, aThird Team All-CCAA pick in 2004, rejoins the team after a year away. Anderson batted .300 with a pair of home runs and 16 RBIs in‘04, helping lead the Seawolves to the NCAA West Region championship game. Matt Frick expects to be in the mix for playing time in‘06 as well. Frick hit .237 with seven runs batted in as a backup in 2005. Two more hard-hitting Division I transfers, Andres Gonzalez and the powerful Trevor Howell, could be behind the dish as well.

Pitchers The pitching staff returns 3/4 of last year’s rotation in Christopher Herrera, Andrew Opatz, and Justin Wiley. The trio combined for 26 starts last year and over 150 . Herrera had the best record of the bunch at 4-2. Opatz was just 3-6, though he did have a 4.22 ERA and was second on the team with 40 . JustinWiley went 3-2 with a 3.80 ERA, the second lowest on the team among starters. The pitch- ing staff is sure to cast quite a shadow in more ways that one. With the addition of 6’7” Brent Lysander and 6’6” Jason Sims, in addition to 6’8” Paige Dumont, the Seawolf staff is one of the tallest in the country. The average height for Seawolf hurlers in ‘06 is nearly 6’3”.

Schedule As usual, the 2006 SSU baseball schedule features some of the top teams in the region. SSU will make a As a two-year starter for the men’s team, Paige trip to Phoenix to take on Grand Canyon and New Mexico Highlands in early February for games that expect Dumont has been a familiar face at Seawolf Gym.
