DEREK JETER’S BIOGRAPHY By the time he stepped away from baseball in 2014 after a historic 20-year career, Derek Jeter had established himself as one of the most respected men to ever have played the game. With a reputation as an unmatched leader both on and off the field, Jeter has quickly transitioned into a second career leading a variety of successful business ventures and entrepreneurial investments. Most recently, he became part-owner of MLB’s Miami Marlins, for whom he also now serves as CEO, overseeing the day-to-day for both the business and baseball operations for the team. He is the first African-American to serve in this role for any major league team in the history of the sport. Jeter is also the founder of The Players’ Tribune, an innovative multimedia company where world- class athletes share their honest and unique perspectives, bringing fans closer to the games they love. In November 2013, Jeter and Simon & Schuster announced the Jeter Publishing imprint, which includes both adult and children’s books verticals. The first book released, The Contract, debuted at #2 on The New York Times Children’s Middle Grade Best Seller list. In October 2014, the imprint released a full-color photo book called Jeter Unfiltered, also a Best Seller, providing fans an in-depth look at his life through never-before-published images taken over the course of his final season. He also serves as Partner and Brand Development Officer of Luvo, a transformational lifestyle food brand where he is involved in product development, brand awareness and strategic partnerships. -

Frick Award Online Balloting Begins Tomorrow and Continues Through Sept. 30 OAKLAND, Calif. – No baseball broadcaster was more decisive—or distinctive—in the big moment than the Oakland A’s late, great Bill King. Now, it’s time for his legions of ardent supporters to be just as decisive in voting him into the Baseball Hall of Fame. Starting tomorrow, fans of the legendary A’s announcer can cast their online ballot for a man who is generally regarded as the greatest broadcaster in Bay Area history when the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum’s Facebook site is activated for 2012 Ford C. Frick Award voting during the month of September. King, who passed away at the age of 78 in 2005, was the leading national vote-getter in fan balloting for the Frick Award in both 2005 and 2006. Following his death, the A’s permanently named their Coliseum broadcast facilities the “Bill King Broadcast Booth” after the team’s revered former voice. Online voting for fan selections for the award will begin at 7 a.m. PDT tomorrow, Sept. 1, at the Hall of Fame’s Facebook site, www.facebook.com/baseballhall, and conclude at 2 p.m. PDT Sept. 30. The Over-Production of US Sports and the New International
2003 “The Over-Production of US Sports and the New International Division of Cultural Labor.” (with David Rowe, Jim McKay, and Geoffrey Lawrence) International Review for the Sociology of Sport 38, no. 4: 427-40. 02_IRS articles 38/4 10/24/03 9:32 AM Page 428 428 INTERNATIONAL REVIEW FOR THE SOCIOLOGY OF SPORT 38(4) ing link derived from cold-war surrogacy and postcolonial hangovers. The anec- dote’s lesson is clear: that the globalization of sport is equally about the appeal of sport and its imbrication with world capitalism. The Taliban’s decision to affiliate with the ICC illustrates the complex and contradictory links among sport, politics, and global capitalism in a country that is on the economic and political periphery. We can discern similar intricacies and tensions at one of the epicenters of global capitalism, the USA. It is highly para- doxical that while US sport has been used as a quintessential signifier of laissez- faire values, both inside and outside the country, it is heavily protected, operating in an economically uncompetitive, welfarist environment. We investigate this important but understudied contradiction of protectionism via the global traffic in both workers and audiences associated with US professional sport. This echoes the approach we have recently used to analyze the uneven but interconnected processes that characterize the present moment in sport, via a New International Division of Cultural Labor (NICL) that governs globalization, television, and commodification (Miller et al., 2001a). The most significant development since the publication of that work has been the bust following the boom in TV sports, notably in the US, Germany, and Britain.
