3 Young, talented Wildcats ready to dive into 2019 season

Every collegiate soccer season comes with its own set of unique personalities, challenges, and successes. For Chico State head men÷s coach Felipe Restrepo, one early clue of what the 2019 season might have in store came at the team÷s annual preseason pool party hosted by Mikey he and his wife, Mandi. Hirsch “All the young guys were in the pool cannonballing each other, laughing and yelling and being goofy,‘ said Restrepo. ”I haven÷t had that in a while. It was refreshing.‘ Restrepo÷s squad is markedly younger than in year÷s past, featuring 17 freshmen and 20 who have yet to make their Chico State debut, out of a roster of 32. The Wildcats are coming off another tremendous season in which they flnished third in the California Collegiate Athletic Association, reached the CCAA Tournament for the third year in a row, and earned their fourth NCAA Championship Tournament berth in the past nine seasons, flnishing 13-6-1. Despite losing some key members of last season÷s squad, and the in‡ux of youth, the Wildcats aren÷t exactly short on experience. Mikey Hirsch, Ronan McEnroe, Justin Bethke, and Alex Fluitt are all redshirt seniors beginning their flfth year in the program. Redshirt juniors Cooper Renteria and Garrett Hogbin have put in three seasons apiece. Seniors Matt Haflzi and Samuel Licona are senior transfers in their second season in the program. And graduate transfer Joey Scotti played the last three years at California Baptist. ”What I think is really cool is we÷ve got a good bunch of guys who have really put their stamp on the program over the last few years,‘ said Restrepo. ”They÷ve all been to the NCAA Tournament. They÷ve done nothing but win. Now, we÷re asking them to be the stewards of the program and show the new guys the way and they are doing a terriflc job.‘ The in‡ux of youth has been both anxiety-inducing and exciting. ”There are some unknowns in places and we÷re trying to flnd ourselves a little bit,‘ said Restrepo. ”But it÷s also been a lot of fun. There÷s a lot of new talent and we÷re building an identity for ourselves.‘ Restrepo has relished the uptick in teachable moments. ”I flnd that those things flne-tune our culture and continue to grow our program.” The CCAA÷s coaches don÷t seem to expect a major drop off from the Wildcats this season. They are picked to flnish flfth in the preseason coaches÷ poll. The Wildcats have developed an impressive winning tradition, having put together eight consecutive winning

4 seasons and a .632 winning percentage during Restrepo÷s tenure, and winning percentage of .611 during their 56- year history. ”Our positive culture and leadership are our biggest drivers,‘ said Restrepo. ”I÷m talking about leadership from a standpoint of thinking bigger than soccer. We want to build up these young men to excel in the areas of family, community, and career. ”The goal is for these guys to be identifled as leaders. I want them getting job offers before they even graduate, which is what we÷ve been seeing. One of our alums, Russ(ell) Ellyson, just got into med school, and another, Chris Paolo, is applying to med school, which is something I÷m really proud of.‘ When the whistle sounds, make no mistake, Restrepo wants to see his Wildcats operating with precision on the pitch. That effort will start with the team÷s back line. Hogbin, a Third Team All-West Region performer last season, and Bethke, who will make his 39th consecutive start Thursday, anchor that unit. Scotti will join them, along with one of the following exciting options: sophomore returner DiAngelo Gleaves, Oxnard Community College transfer Servando Higuera, redshirt freshmen Diego Caballero and Donovan Jackson, and true freshman Ben Souza. Another true freshman, Garvin Brooks, will redshirt this year. They÷ll be the last line of defense before new goalkeeper Jose Paredes, a two-time First Team All-South Coast Conference selection while playing at Rio Hondo Community College. He redshirted last season behind CCAA Goalkeeper of the Year Damion Lewis. ”Jose has a lot of experience and he÷s a talented goalkeeper,‘ said Restrepo. ”He÷s waited patiently and he÷s excited to prove himself at this level.” Paredes will be backed up by a trio of freshmen: Luis Albarran, Marshall Herrman, and Bennett Fries. The midfleld will look much the same as it did in 2018. Regulars McEnroe (2018 honorable mention All-CCAA), Fluitt (2018 honorable mention All-CCAA), Haflzi, Licona, Hirsch, and Renteria are all back in the mix, ‡anked by sophomore Anais Mayo, redshirt freshman Alex Low, and true freshman Anthony Kaskie. Up top, the Wildcats are exciting but unproven. Speedy Sophomore Andrew Hazzard is the lone returning forward with experience. He÷s joined by freshmen Jacob Chong“wh o Restrepo calls a cross between two-time All- Region forward Jeremiah Egujie and two-time All-American Ferid Celosmanovic“Noah Ristovski, Noah Ross, Zeke Shull, and Ryan Jordan. “These guys are all goal scorers. They are all skilled in front of the net,” said Restrepo. “But they are getting their flrst taste of big-time college soccer and that÷s a learning curve.‘ Four more Wildcats“sophomore Juan Perez and freshmen Liam Duer ksen, Connor Gorrien, and Kris Brown“ have all sustained injuries in the buildup to the season and their status for the season is still to be determined. How the Wildcats will operate on the pitch this season is anybody÷s guess for now, though Restrepo believes the team has what it takes to make its fourth straight postseason appearance. In wins and losses, and during every practice, meeting, and road trip, there÷s much for the 2019 Wildcats to teach and learn. ”These guys are going to learn what it means to be part of a positive, successful culture“what it means to be a Wildcat,‘ said Restrepo. ”They÷re going to hear it from me for sure, but the beauty is that I÷m not teaching it on my own. The veterans and core leaders are helping teach the younger ones, and for me, that÷s a wonderful thing to witness.”

Swartz brings an impressive coaching resume to University Soccer Stadium. Before coming to Chico, he spent the 2017 and 2018 seasons as an assistant coach at Division I Sacramento State, and from 2015–16 was the head assistant coach at Humboldt State. Swartz has also coached at the club level for several years, logging a lengthy stint with the Mad River United Soccer Club in McKinleyville, and most recently serving as head coach of the Folsom Lake Earthquakes. Findlay has lent his multi-subject teaching skills to several Butte County institutions, including Butte College, Durham High School and Intermediate School, Oroville Adult Education, and the Chico Unifled School District.

Nick Lopez—Graduate Assistant Coach The newest addition to the Chico State coaching staff is a very familiar name to North State soccer fans. Chico native Nick Lopez, fresh off of wrapping up his college career with the Wildcats, joins Felipe Restrepo on the University Soccer Field sidelines in 2019. Lopez makes the transition from player to coach after spending two seasons as defender and midflelder for Chico State, helping the Wildcats reach the CCAA Championship Tournament in back-to-back years, and an NCAA Championship Tournament appearance in 2018. Lopez transferred to Chico following two seasons at West Valley College in Saratoga, where he led the Vikings to consecutive Coast Conference North championships. Abbie Kylie Jones Martinez

By Luke Reid Sports Information Director

Student-athletes in the Chico State women÷s soccer program have a long tradition of being quick studies. The Wildcats have earned the United Soccer Coaches Team Academic Award in each of the last six years and 10 of the last 11 with a combined GPA of 3.0 or better. Jordan One of their instructors this fall might be a bit more abstract than Doukakis most. ”I keep telling them we÷re going to let the game be the teacher,‘ said Wildcats Head Coach Kim Sutton, who is entering her 19th season at the helm. “I think this team will grow a lot through playing games, especially early on.” Class begins with a stiff test for the Wildcats: a road trip in early September to take on 15th-ranked Colorado School of Mines and then Regis University. With more than half of the roster made up of freshmen“17 of 33 to be exact“to go along with 10 sophomores, four juniors, and only two seniors, the Wildcats are extremely young. Sutton plans to start four freshmen in the season opener, with more greenhorns to follow off the bench. That isn÷t just because she wants to test them early. It÷s because she thinks they have the talent to provide some answers. “Our batch of freshmen is exceptional,” said Sutton. “They came in prepared and they are soccer savvy. We have a lot of players killing it at practice. They÷re improving every day.‘ They are no doubt benefltting from their other great teacher. The 12th-longest tenured Division II coach in the nation, Sutton÷s combined 237 victories between a six-season- stint at Humboldt State and her 18 at Chico State rank 32nd in Division II women÷s soccer history. Last season, Sutton guided the Wildcats to a 10-2-6 record (including 9-1-2 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association, which was good for second place) and into the NCAA Championship Tournament for the second straight season and seventh time in 15 years. The young Wildcats will also learn from a core group that returns from last season, led by First Team All-Region midflelder Sarah Emigh, CCAA Freshman of the Year Susanna Garcia, All-CCAA defender Abbie Jones, fellow returning starters Jordan Doukakis and Nicole Marquez, and senior Aiden Williams. The CCAA Tournament Scholar Award winner, Emigh is a gritty defensive midflelder who has also racked up four goals and two assists in her flrst two seasons at Chico State. Garcia tied for the team lead with six goals last season, including three match winners, while also dishing out a pair of assists. Jones, who will anchor the back line, has twice earned All-CCAA honors and was named to the All-West Region squad as a sophomore. Perhaps the team÷s

34 most athletic player, Doukakis is the program÷s active leader in assists with eight. ”We don÷t have many upperclassmen, but the leadership is good,‘ said Sutton. ”We have a core group that÷s doing an exceptional job.‘ Jones and Williams help set the tone in distinctive ways. ”Abbie is a veteran starter who leads by example, but when it÷s called for, speaks with authority,‘ said Sutton. ”But she÷s still really approachable. The younger players feel like they can look to her for direction. ”Aiden is a silent worker who just exudes kindness, gets along with everyone, and has a knack for being around the goal at the right time.” The program÷s player-run leadership council, made up of much of that core group, created the team÷s motto for this season: C.A.R.E. (Character. Accountability. Resiliency. Engagement.). “The engagement piece has been our biggest focus early on,” said Sutton. “We are focusing on being engaged and present every day in every moment and being there for each other. That÷s who we are“a family .‘ The Wildcats are also fast. Freshmen starters Chloe King and Mackenzie Gill will ‡ank the speedy Garcia on the wings. ”Susanna will move around up top, and I think she÷ll match upnicely with Chloe and Mackenzie,‘ said Sutton. ”They play with a lot of pace. They÷re extra-hard workers. And they÷re great one-on-one. We÷re excited about them.‘ Another freshman, Camille Lidster, ”a super-active, buzz-around player with a great flrst touch,‘ according to Sutton, will join Emigh and sophomore returners Cody Johnson and Paige Slusarek in the midfleld. Lidster should beneflt from playing alongside Emigh. ”Sarah÷s the engine, the quarterback, and the heart and soul of the midfleld,‘ said Sutton. Joining Jones, Doukakis, and Kylie Martinez on the back line will be the fourth true freshman starter, Alexi Vontsolos, who Sutton describes as ”a very composed, smart, and super-technical player.‘ “There are a lot of others who have a chance to make a big contribution to the team,” said Sutton. “They going to get an opportunity to prove themselves. It÷s going to take the (non-conference) matches to flgure that out.‘ Victoria Graham, who started three matches between the pipes and went 2-0-1 with a .923 save percentage and 0.62 goals-against average as a freshman last season, will be the starter in goal. ”She÷s a great vocal presence and played well when she had the opportunity last year,‘ said Sutton. ”She÷s good off her line and in the air and growing and getting better with experience.” The season-opening weekend will be a sort of homecoming for Graham, who hails from just north of Denver in Fort Collins. She made her collegiate debut last season against Colorado Mines in Chico and made seven saves on the way to a shutout in the scoreless draw. A number of Wildcats would like to similarly prove themselves against Mines this season. Many will get the chance. “Who is going to emerge and grow the depth of our squad is the question right now,” said Sutton. “There are a lot of players who have the ability to make a big contribution to this team. ”This flrst road trip is going to be a great test for us. Our goal will be to grow together and get as prepared as we can be for CCAA play.”
