TAFF S After guiding the Golden Eagles to a successful 2015 season, Vince Beringhele returns for his ninth season as the Cal State L.A. head baseball coach. He led the Golden Eagles to a winning season for the sixth time in the past eight years with a dramatic improvement in 2015. OACHING The Golden Eagles won 12 more games in 2015 than they did in 2014 and were one of the most improved C teams in the NCAA Division II. Cal State L.A. finished with a 28-20 overall record and a 23-17 mark in the California Collegiate Athletic Association last season. The team’s earned run average dropped from 5.84 in 2014 to 3.87 last season and the team’s batting average rose from .262 to .298. The Golden Eagles scored 59 more runs than in 2014 and allowed 90 fewer runs. The 3.87 IOS AGLE earned run average was the lowest for Cal State L.A. in more than 25 years. B E In his first eight years at Cal State L.A., Beringhele has led the Golden Eagles to a 211-189 overall record and a 167-137 mark in conference play. Cal State L.A. has had 40 players earn All-Conference honors, 24 players make LAYER OLDEN All-West Region teams and six players earn All-America recognition. Cal State L.A. has had an All-West Region player P G in each of Beringhele’s eight seasons with the program, including a first-team selection in six of those years. Beringhele led the Golden Eagles to a historic season in 2013 when they won their first-ever CCAA Championship Tournament title and earned a trip to the NCAA Division II playoffs for the first time since 2007. The Golden Eagles posted a 35-22 overall record that included a sparkling 28-12 mark in CCAA play. Cal State L.A. finished second in the CCAA during the regular season, just one game out first place. Duvall became the first player to record two three-homer games while wearing a Braves uniform, and his efforts helped Atlanta set a National League record for runs in a game in the modern era (since 1900). “That was pretty amazing to be a part of,” Braves first baseman Freddie Freeman said. “I’ve never seen an offense click like that.” The Braves fell just one run short of tying the modern record for runs scored in a game, set when the Rangers defeated the Orioles, 30-3, in the first game of a doubleheader on Aug. 22, 2007, at Camden Yards. Dating back to 1900, no NL club had scored more than 28 runs in a game. The Braves’ franchise record was 23, a mark tallied during the second game of a doubleheader against the Cubs on Sept. 2, 1957. Ronald Acuña Jr. contributed to his three-hit night with a three-run home run to cap a six-run fifth. But it was his bases-loaded double in the sixth inning that gave the Braves a new franchise record for runs in a single game, opening a 25-8 lead. According to the Elias Sports Bureau, Atlanta became the first MLB team to score at least 22 runs through the first five innings since the Blue Jays (24 runs) in a win over the Orioles on June 26, 1978.

Biographical Sketch Dr. Margarita Peraza-Rugeley is an Assistant Professor of Spanish in the Department of English, Foreign Languages and Philosophy at Henderson State University. Her scholarly interests center on colonial Latin-American literature from New Spain, specifically the 17th century. Using the case of the Spanish colonies, she explores the birth of national identities in hybrid cultures. Another scholarly interest is the genre of Latin American colonialist narratives by modern-day female authors who situate their plots in the colonial period. In 2013, she published Llámenme «el mexicano»: Los almanaques y otras obras de Carlos de Sigüenza y Góngora (Peter Lang,). She also has published short stories.
