ACA | - - SUP - Raft - Rescue

Welcome to the 2012 ACA National Paddlesports Conference & SUP Summit:

The ACA is the premier organization that represents paddlers of all abilities and in all venues across the country. Whether it’s our national standard for paddlesports instruction, our far reaching stewardship initiatives, insurance for your club or event, our commitment to paddlesports events and recreation, or simply competing in a local citizen’s race, our volunteers and staff are here to serve. As part of the ACA's leadership role in the paddlesports community, we have initiated this signature event to target multiple facets of , , rafting, SUP and rescue.

Paddle safe – often,

A Brief History of the ACA

Founded in 1880 by a group of 15 notable canoeists, the ACA has grown into the nation’s largest and most active nonprofit paddlesports organization with 30,000 members, over 150 Paddle America Clubs and 100 Affiliate Organizations across the United States and abroad. Through friendships forged in the 1870's through regatta's, regional canoe club events, and the canoe cruising and exploration of America's waterways, the ACA was established on the shores of Lake George, NY on August 3, 1880. Nathaniel H. Bishop, a prominent 19th century canoe explorer, was known as the 'father of the ACA'. Bishop, along with the first Commodore, William L. Alden, declared in the 1880-81 ACA Yearbook the object of the ACA "shall be the promotion of canoeing."

Original focuses of the association were centered around: camaraderie, racing, poling, canoe sailing and extended waterway exploration. Throughout the early 20th century the ACA evolved from a loose knit group to an incorporated entity whose influence began to reach across the country as well as internationally. From the 1940's through the early 1990's, the ACA placed significant resources into all aspects of paddlesport competition, from local and national races to winning two World Championships to being the National Governing Body (NGB) for paddlesports for the U.S. Olympic Committee. With strong ties to the American Red Cross, the YMCA and the Boy Scouts of America, the instruction program was formalized in 1973 with the advent of the ACA Canoe Instruction Certification Committee. Over the past 40 years this committee has also been known as the Training Committee, the National Instruction Committee and currently, the Safety Education & Instruction Council.

Publications of the organization began in the 1880's and ranged from Forest and Stream and The American Canoeist, to Canoe, Paddler and Paddle Dealer. Today, the ACA has partnered with Rapid Media.

The ACA is dedicated to promoting canoeing, kayaking, rafting and stand up paddleboarding as wholesome lifetime recreational activities. We accomplish our mission by providing a variety of programs and public services in such areas as: event sponsorship, safety education, instructor certification, waterway stewardship, water trails, paddler's rights and protection, and public information campaigns. We are affiliated with over 300 organizations, such as Subaru of America, L.L. Bean, and the U.S. Coast Guard that help us to pursue our mission.

For over 130 years, the ACA has been the voice of paddlers across the country. Through the tireless efforts of volunteers, committee members, board members, and staff, the ACA continues to work at the grassroots, regional and national levels to promote fun and responsible canoeing, kayaking, rafting & stand up paddleboarding on America's waterways.

A Letter from the President

Why do you paddle? Ask a hundred different paddlers and you might get a hundred different answers – because there are hundreds of great reasons to paddle. Some paddle for excitement and adventure, others for a chance to spend time outside, and still others for a chance to be with friends and family. Most of us enjoy all of these reasons, and could add a lot more. But, no matter why you paddle, the American Canoe Association’s National Paddlesport Conference offers something to make your more fun.

The ACA is the oldest and largest paddling-focused organization in the US, and the only US organization that addresses all aspects of paddling. ACA members and staff do a huge range of things, such as teach paddling, clean waterways, represent the paddling community to regulators, and coordinate paddling events, all aimed at making paddling more fun for all paddlers. This year’s NPC will include seminars from some of the top educators in the US and Europe. The NPC also includes the ACA’s annual membership meeting, where members have a chance to help guide where the ACA is headed in the future. Regardless of your skill level or experience, the NPC has something to help make your paddling life better. But, the best part of the NPC may be the times between events, when you can speak (and paddle) with paddlers from around the country and make new paddling friends. I hope to see you there!

Writer, Filmmaker and Adventurer A six-time grantee of the Expeditions Council and award-winning writer and filmmaker, Jon Bowermaster's ten-year-long OCEANS 8 project took him and his teams around the world by sea kayak during the past ten years, on expeditions ranging from the Aleutian Islands to , French Polynesia to //, to , and Tasmania to . Seeing the world from the seat of a sea kayak has given Bowermaster a one-of-a-kind look at both the health of the planet's ocean, and the lives of the nearly four billion people around the globe who depend on them. His eight-part film series documenting the OCEANS 8 project has shown in 150 countries on the National Geographic Channel. Recently named one of a dozen Ocean Heroes by the National Geographic Society and one of its official Explorers, Jon's website and blog (Notes from Sea Level, http://www.jonbowermaster.com/) continues his reporting on the world's coastlines, the people who live along them, and issues of importance to anyone interested in and concerned about the planet's one ocean. Jon's most recent documentaries are "Terra Antarctica, Rediscovering the Seventh Continent,” "What Would Darwin Think? Man v. Nature in the Galapagos” and the prize- winning "SoLa, Louisiana Water Stories.” He spent January 2012 in Antarctica producing the first 3D film about the seventh continent, to be distributed through museums and science institutions around the world beginning Spring 2013. His most recent documentary, out in October, "Dear Governor Cuomo …” -- looks at the controversy around fracking in New York State. Author of eleven books, Jon's most recent are "Descending the Dragon" about his travels in Vietnam published by National Geographic Books and "Wildebeest in a Rainstorm,” a collection of profiles of our most intriguing conservationists and explorers and published by Menasha Ridge Press. His companion book to the Jacques Perrin/DisneyNature film "Oceans” was published alongside the premiere of the film on Earth Day, April 2010. Bowermaster lives in New York's Hudson Valley.

November 2 - 4, 2012 Educational Sessions & Presenters

Steve Scherrer - Understanding Boat Control Understanding how boats are shaped can help anyone become a better paddler! Come learn how different hull shapes are designed for different purposes and how the environment we paddle in can contribute to paddling frustration, a BAD thing….or pure bliss, a GOOD thing. All we need is a simple understanding of physics (how the boat and paddle move) and bio-mechanics (how our body works) to become better paddlers, no matter what the conditions! Come learn in this FUN and interactive presentation. Steve, based out of Ocean Park, WA is a Boat Designer and Teaching & Technical Specialist for Confluence Watersports. He is also an ACA Instructor Trainer Educator for L5: Advanced Open Water Coastal Kayak and L2: Stand Up Paddleboard. In addition, he is a member of the Coastal and SUP Committees. He started paddling a canoe in Boy Scouts at age 10, and has been deeply involved in paddlesports since. He became involved with the ACA in 1992. Steve, Cindy (his wife) and Keith Jensen founded Alder Creek Kayak Supply, Inc., in 1986, in Portland, Oregon. They sold the business in 2004. In 2001 he assisted Confluence Watersports in the design of the Tempest sea kayak, and now works for them full-time. Living on the West Coast allows plenty of great testing venues for the many projects they are working on and he is proud to be a traveling sea kayak ambassador for Confluence Watersports. Franzi Pokorny - Raise Your Head and Raise Your Mind Brain Body Boat & Soul – or how body, emotions, thinking, and breathing are connected, and how they influence each other. A good technical fundament is required to move comfortably over the surface "water”, but there is much more: respect, awareness, perception, recognition of possibilities and limits, and confidence. In exercises and experiments we try to find out how (or if) our mental and physical focus has effect on our paddling qualities. The session is open for open canoes, kayaks, and SUPS. This session is for those who are curious of a mental and physical voyage of discovery. Franzi lives in Ilanz, a small town in a mountain valley in Graubünden, Switzerland. Not far from here starts the river Rhine; its 750 miles journey towards the North Sea. Here, where the mighty Rhine is still young and frolicsome, Franzi became a raft guide in 1990. She hadn't paddled seriously before, and was unsuspecting but filled with enthusiasm for this adventure. And for Franzi, the fascination of paddling is still as it was in the beginning. Listen to the water, respect it, play with it, try to understand – and you learn all about life. She is a multi-discipline ACA Instructor (L4: WW Canoe, L3: FreeStyle Canoe, L2: ESUP) who is a featured presenter throughout Europe.

2012 ACA National Paddlesports Conference & SUP Summit Charleston, SC Chris Crolley - The Dynamic Ecosystem, from Black Water to Barrier Islands Ever wonder about the functional building blocks of the estuaries you paddle on? From tides and salt marshes, to ecological zones and the roles of plants, animals and even detritus, join Chris Crolley of Mt. Pleasant, SC for this interactive presentation on the waters between the shore and barrier islands. Chris enjoys introducing visitors and residents to some of the South Carolina coastal region's most pristine areas, while ensuring that despite activity the areas remain pristine. Promoting an awareness of the coast's beauty, its function and its fragility in a manner that is safe and protective of its clientele, in turn encourages broader stewardship of the coast's irreplaceable resources. Enabling a broader range of residents and visitors to experience the coastal ecosystem firsthand.

Julie Roach - Yoga & Fitness on SUP H2yO is a fitness and yoga program that utilizes balance, core stability and yoga postures on standup paddleboards. It is possible, and not as difficult as it looks! Challenging, yes, but easy enough for even those still new to SUP. Simple yoga postures and balance exercises are preformed low to the board and in a synchronized pattern that allows your body to open and strengthen in a step by step progression. The H2yO Basics program uses not only the center and most stable area of the board, but moves you rail to rail, nose to tail. Gradually you'll see progress, trust yourself and enjoy a little playtime on the SUP. Go ahead, try a headstand or arm balance. The H2yo instructor will walk you through the safest and easiest way to enter and exit the yoga postures on your SUP. As in most yoga classes, we end with a quiet resting supine ‘savasana' laying back and enjoy Mother Nature. Note: the wider the board the better! Your recreational boards are a bit more forgiving, but everyone is invited, welcomed and encouraged to try H2yO on their SUP! WHAT TO BRING: An open mind and positive attitude! Florida native, lover of life, yoga, SUP, travel and adventure, Julie brings them all together. Certified in Hatha yoga, she jumped at the opportunity to develop her yoga class on the water. On BOARD since 2009, Julie's fun and adventurous spirit shines through every class she teaches. Finding the ‘balance' on SUP, she has perfected a system that is safe, stable and fun for everyone. "Safety is key. As an instructor, you're responsible for everyone's wellbeing and an enjoyable experience.” Julie is a certified ACA Certified Level 2 SUP instructor and is a member of the ACA, Surfrider Foundation, Mother Ocean, Sup'n Girls, and YogaGirl Adventures. Supported and sponsored by likeminded companies: lululemon, Edge SUP, Cape Ann NightSup, and balance trainer Indo Board & Yoga Board. Join Julie for an adventure spreading the message of yoga, health and awareness through respect and love of nature.

2012 ACA National Paddlesports Conference & SUP Summit Charleston, SC Ivan Bartha - Capture Them & Keep Them Who will be the next generation of ACA Instructors? As our population continues to change, we need to consider who the next generation of paddlesports instructors are, where they will come from and what they can bring to the ACA as participants, instructors, and as leaders. We can attract traditionally underserved populations with a little effort, commitment and engagement to ensure that paddlesports education is available to all people, not just some people. Ivan Bartha currently coordinates the Outdoor Endeavors program at St. Cloud State University. Since 1989, he has been involved in a variety of outdoor leadership roles at therapeutic and clinical programs, non- profits and in higher education. Ivan received his undergraduate degree in Outdoor Recreation from Northern Michigan University in 1995 and Masters in Education from Southern Illinois University Carbondale in 2001. Ivan considers himself a work in progress as an ACA Instructor with certifications in L3 River Kayaking, L3 River Canoeing and L3 Coastal Kayaking. A jack of all trades and master of none, he has made the lifelong commitment to paddlesports education as he is getting too old to be good at anything else.

Ben Lawry - Biomechanics of Paddling Move beyond just putting your paddle in the water and pulling on it, to having your body work in a fluid, graceful, and efficient manner. This class focuses on body efficiency vs. paddle efficiency. Ben has been paddling for over 35 years, and teaching/guiding for over 20. He has taught paddling on five continents and competed on three. Presently he works as head instructor and owner of Kayak Camp with his wife, Elizabeth. Ben presented at both the US WW symposium and the National ACA Conference in 2010. He has led trips and traveled extensively in South America, South Africa, Europe and North America. Ben splits his time now teaching paddling and working with stores. His teaching also takes him to symposiums, shows and paddling rendezvous all over the United States. As a brand ambassador, he is involved with kayak design in sea, light touring and racing kayaks. All of which has led to an in-depth knowledge of instruction/guiding practices and procedures, strong commitment to quality service, as well as excellent organizational and problem solving skills. He enjoys competing in sprint, sea kayak, slalom, rodeo, marathon canoe and kayak, , and wildwater events.

2012 ACA National Paddlesports Conference & SUP Summit Charleston, SC Jeremy Oyen - Instructional Skills: It's not Just About How Folks Learn Join Jeremy Oyen for a quick and dirty in-depth look into the art of Instruction. As Instructors and teachers we all know the value of understanding learning styles, but have you looked further into other aspects of expertise & outcomes? This session will focus on 4 key areas of Instructional Methodology that will provide a solid framework for any outdoor class. Using example models from various leaders in educational theory as well as outdoor education, we will examine the Experiential Outcome Model, develop greater understanding of Levels of Expertise, provide insight to the anatomy of a Learning Activity and spend time discussion Multiple Intelligences. Jeremy Oyen has been working in the Outdoor Education and Recreation field for 24 years at the local, regional and national levels. He is currently the Outdoor Programs and Outreach National Curriculum and Training Coordinator for REI. REI Outdoor Programs reached 170,000 people nationwide in 2011 through in-store and field classes. Prior to being with REI Jeremy served as the ACA's Safety Education, Instruction and Outreach Director (2006-2011) and ran Cleveland Metroparks Institute of the Great Outdoors (2001-2006). Jeremy currently holds many ACA instructor/trainer/educator certifications and is an ITE in Adaptive Paddling & L3 Coastal Kayaking / an IT in L2 Essentials of SUP, L4 Open Water Coastal Kayaking, L3 River Canoe / an Instructor in L3 River Kayaking.

Tim Mattson - two presentations Kayaking on Bulging Planets in Freaky Water Using our bodies and a paddle to move a kayak through the water is great fun. It's even better when we paddle with our minds as well. In this talk, we will help you become a "brainy paddler” by discussing the science of kayaking … but in a light hearted way that anyone can understand and enjoy. Come join us to learn about the science kayakers routinely encounter … such as bulging planets (tides), freaky water (wave mechanics), and flashy plants (bioluminescence). Kayak Navigation for Normal People As kayakers, we like to travel out to sea, reach exciting locations, and then make it back again. The art of navigation helps you plan such journeys and then manage them underway so you always know where you are. Many of us love to make navigation as complicated as possible; it makes us feel superior. In this talk, however, I will show you that it doesn't need to be so complicated. Any kayaker with a bit of practice can master the core techniques of kayak navigation. When done right (i.e. without a GPS brain-crutch) it is fun and adds a whole new element to play with as we kayak. Tim Mattson is a "born again” paddler, sea kayak instructor (ACA level 5), and an instructor trainer (ACA level 3). He has paddled in exciting places around the world including Australia, Scandinavia, Baja, Alaska and the Pacific Northwest. To support his kayaking obsession, Tim works as a professional scientist (Ph.D. Theoretical Chemistry) with a background in molecular physics and computer science. He has published four books and over 75 scientific articles.

2012 ACA National Paddlesports Conference & SUP Summit Charleston, SC Todd Johnstone-Wright - Incident Avoidance We often train skills designed to manage incidents but spend less time exploring the anatomy of incidents, training assessment and avoidance skills. In this hands-on, principal based session, participants will look at real incidents and determine their origin and work out possible mitigation plans. Todd has worked in outdoor pursuits and education for over 17 years and is Director of the Saint Michael's College Wilderness Program which offers training, assessment and expedition programming in sea, surf and . In addition, Todd actively teaches coastal kayaking, whitewater and surf kayaking throughout the United States. Kayaking and mountain sports have afforded him the opportunity to paddle, climb and ski throughout North America, South America, Africa, Asia and Europe. For Todd, paddling and development of paddlers is not just a career and passion but an honor; "it is a great honor to be present when a student makes the connection, whether it be figuring out a particular skill or simply developing a relationship with the water". His credentials include, American Canoe Association L:5 Advanced Open Water Instructor, L4 Open Water Instructor Trainer, L4 Surf Kayak Instructor, L4 Whitewater Instructor, British Canoe Union L3 Sea Coach, 5 Star Sea Tip Leader, FSRT Assessor, SOLO Wilderness Medical Educator in addition, he holds guiding and instructor credentials in the climbing and ski disciplines.

Henry Gaudet - Surf Kayaking - The Other Whitewater If your whitewater isn't flowing or you need a change of scenery, try surfkayaking. Few paddlers consider this, possibly because little is written about this exciting and challenging form of paddling. This discussion contains the key points to help kayakers prepare for the surf. With over 11,000 miles of coastline the USA is a haven for surfkayaking. Take the time to drive to the beach and see the "other" whitewater. The surf and impact zone can be intimidating but with the proper equipment, training and judgment it offers an ever changing paddling venue. While the kayaks used for surfing is different, many aspects will seem quite familiar. Let's look, touch, and discuss the basic types of kayaks used for surfing. Our paddle enables us to maneuver and catch more waves than the board surfers. This is when the rules of etiquette are necessary to remember so we can all get along and enjoy the waves. Surfing a kayak requires knowledge of wave dynamics and the characteristics of the break where we are surfing. The surf zone is manageable in our shorter boats, but paddling out, positioning and catching the wave also requires some thought and local knowledge that can be observed by watching the waves and other surfers. Try the other "whitewater" Surfkayaking. Come see, touch and discuss the three different surf kayaks-SOT with fins, Waveski with seat belts and the high performance decked surf kayaks. We'll discuss safety, equipment, etiquette, surfing and wave dynamics. Learn about your next adrenaline fix and a paddling venue that is forever changing. This discussion contains the key points to help kayakers prepare for the surf. Henry grew up paddling on the Chesapeake Bay, surfed and whitewater kayaked the surrounding area. Now in Florida, avid sea kayaker and instructor with a year around beach with breaks for surf kayaking.

2012 ACA National Paddlesports Conference & SUP Summit Charleston, SC Hugh Gibson - Leave No Trace Awareness Workshop for Paddlers This presentation will be dedicated to providing the participants with more information about Leave No Trace and how to incorporate it into your existing programs and activities. Real hands on experience will be provided by a LNT Master Educator Instructor. The third tier of Leave No Trace training is the Awareness Workshop. This workshop is designed for educators, children, college students, Girl Scouts, outdoor professionals, Boy Scouts, trail crews, hiking club members and others interested in Leave No Trace skills and ethics. Participants receive introductory training in the skills and ethics of Leave No Trace and a LNT Awareness Certificate.

Don Goff - Signals & Nav Rules Every Paddler Needs to Know The Coast Guard and Paddlers? a Partnership for Safety. The Coast Guard is the federal agency with primary responsibility for marine safety. This class will show the Coast Guard view of paddle sports offshore. Paddlers are vessel operators who need to know how they fit into the overall marine environment for navigation, safety, and awareness. In this class, we'll demonstrate visual distress signals best suited for paddlers, the 'pecking order' of vessels under navigation rules, visibility in crowded seaways, Digital Selective Calling (DSC) and the new Auxiliary vessel examination process for paddle craft available to paddlers. Don Goff is the liaison between the Coast Guard Auxiliary and the ACA. A lifelong paddler, he has canoed and kayaked on muddy midwestern rivers, Puget Sound, Penobscot Bay and around Chincoteague and Assateague Islands. Most Sunday mornings find him watching for eagles in Kane's Creek off the Potomac River in one of the wooden kayaks he has built. Between paddling trips, he completed a career at AT&T and a second one at University of Maryland University College. He is qualified as an active duty SAR boat crew member and as an Auxiliary Coxswain, among other technical and professional aquatic certifications.

Press release - October 2012

BIC Sport launches BIC SUP One Design Challenge

BIC Sport is proud to announce the launch of a new international BIC SUP One Design Challenge. The concept is simple: all competitors use the same Stand Up Paddleboard (SUP) in a variety of race situations, with simple race rules and one essential guiding principle : Fun, Friendly Competition without the equipment ‘arms race’.

A pioneer in the field of board sports for over 30 years, BIC Sport has always had a major presence on the international competition scene. Over the last 10 years BIC Sport has focused on promoting a friendly, accessible race format: One Design (also known as ‘Monotype’ or ‘Formula’ Racing), which has enabled thousands of young hopefuls to compete at the highest level without the results being determined by who has the most expensive gear. The BIC Techno 293 One Design windsurf board and the junior class O'pen BIC sailing dinghy are currently driving the most exciting and inclusive monotype sailing classes worldwide. In 2013 this inclusive concept will be extended to the world of Stand Up Paddle with the organization of innovative Stand Up Paddleboard competitions open to everyone.

BIC SUP One Design Challenge events will take place at venues (beaches, rivers and lakes) which make it easy for novice racers and spectators alike to understand and get excited about this great new sport.

Race formats, rules and courses will be short and simple, making them easy to understand for everyone.

Competitions will be organized in pool format to enable a fast turnaround of heats and give riders the chance of racing more than once.

Equipment- The chosen board is the Wing 12'6, an excellent fit for this type of competition due to its superb glide and high performance. It is very stable and accessible for the widest possible range of riders. The Wing 12’6 is also extremely durable, light weight, and reasonably priced. These are all essential elements for successful One Design competitions, regardless of the sport.

BIC Sport will be organizing these events in collaboration with retail partners, existing event organizers and partner clubs. Test events have already been held in Orlando, Florida, La Rochelle in France, with another scheduled in Puerto Rico later this year (Paddle Royal, Dec 1st & 2nd).

Race rules and an event schedule for BIC SUP One Design 2013 will be available online in the next few weeks at www.bicsuponedesign.com, with regular updates as additional events are added to the schedule.
