FC Schalke 04 will look to their imperious home form as they bid to secure a first UEFA Champions League semi-final appearance at the expense of holders FC Internazionale Milano. • Schalke have won four out of four in the competition in Gelsenkirchen and have never lost a tie in UEFA competition after winning the first leg away, though Leonardo's Inter won at FC Bayern München in the last round. • The holders will need to better even that feat this time having gone down 5-2 at San Siro despite taking the lead twice. Goals from Dejan Stanković (1) and Diego Milito (34) were cancelled out by Joel Matip (17) and Edu (40) before Schalke took control in the second half, Raúl González (53), an Andrea Ranocchia own goal (57) and Edu (75) completing a memorable victory. Previous meetings • This contest is a rematch of the 1997 UEFA Cup final. ' Schalke won the first leg in Gelsenkirchen 1-0 through ' 69th-minute effort. Iván Zamorano struck the only goal of the return for Roy Hodgson's Inter after 84 minutes, although Schalke subsequently prevailed 4-1 on penalties. • The lineups for the first leg in Germany on 7 May 1997 were: Schalke: Lehmann, Thon, De Kock, Linke, Eigenrauch, Anderbrügge, Müller, Němec, Büskens (Max 66), Látal, Wilmots. Inter: Pagliuca, Bergomi, Paganin, Galante, Pistone, Zanetti, Sforza, Fresi (Berti 61), Winter, Ganz, Zamorano. • Luigi Simoni was in charge of Inter when they took revenge in the quarter-finals the following season. Ronaldo earned the Nerazzurri a 1-0 first-leg win and although Michaël Goossens cancelled this out in the 90th minute of the return, Taribo West's extra-time effort earned the Italian side aggregate victory en route to lifting the trophy. • Inter's Javier Zanetti played in all four matches. Match background • Inter are bidding to become the first team to successfully defend the trophy in the UEFA Champions League era. This is their 12th European Champion Clubs' Cup quarter-final and they have won eight of their previous 11. • Schalke, by contrast, are in good shape to make it third time lucky after quarter-final defeats in 1958/59 and 2007/08. • Schalke's 3-1 second-leg victory against Valencia CF in the last 16 was the third straight UEFA Champions League home game in which they scored three goals. They are unbeaten against Italian opposition in Gelsenkirchen with three wins and two draws. • Their most recent Italian visitors were US Città di Palermo in the 2005/06 UEFA Cup round of 16. (penalty), Søren Larsen and Mimoun Azaouagh earned Schalke a 3-0 victory as they overturned a 1-0 first-leg deficit. • Inter have won and lost in Germany already this season. They went down 3-0 at SV Werder Bremen on Matchday 6 but secured a dramatic 3-2 win at Bayern in the last 16. Trailing 1-0 from the first leg, they came back from 2-1 down in Bavaria to prevail with a late Goran Pandev goal and thereby triumph on away goals. • Inter's victory at Bayern was their first away from home in the 2010/11 competition and their first in their last five visits to Germany. Their previous away success against opponents had been a 2-0 win at Bayer 04 Leverkusen in the 2002/03 UEFA Champions League second group stage, from which the only survivors are Iván Córdoba and Zanetti. • Inter's overall record away to German opposition is W5 D7 L4. • However, only twice in the UEFA Champions League era – Inter's triumph at Bayern and the 1995/96 semi-finals, when AFC Ajax recovered from losing 1-0 to Panathinaikos FC with a 3-0 away triumph – has a team turned round a tie after a home first-leg defeat. • Inter have won three of the seven UEFA competition ties in which they have lost the first leg at home, against FC TPS Turku in the 1987/88 UEFA Cup second round (0-1 home, 2-0 away) and in the 1997/98 UEFA Cup second round (1-2 home, 3-1 away). • Schalke have won all ten UEFA competition ties in which they recorded an away first-leg victory, including two in which they initially triumphed by three-goal margins: against APOEL FC (2008/09 UEFA Cup first round, 4-1 away, 1-1 home) and ACF Fiorentina (1977/78 UEFA Cup first round, 3-0 away, 2-1 home).

Rangnick's first spell with Schalke ended seven days after a 3-2 loss to Inter's neighbours AC Milan at San Siro on 6 December 2005, a result that ended their interest in the 2005/06 UEFA Champions League. • During his long stay at the Santiago Bernabéu, Raúl shared a dressing room with all of Inter's Real Madrid CF old boys – Wesley Sneijder, Esteban Cambiasso, Walter Samuel and even Samuel Eto'o, who made three Liga appearances in the 1998/99 and 1999/2000 campaigns. • Raúl appeared for Madrid against Inter in the 1998/99 UEFA Champions League group stage, winning 2-0 at home but losing 3-1 at San Siro. His final goal in the competition for the Merengues was against Milan in last term's group stage. • José Manuel Jurado's season in the Madrid first team coincided with Samuel's stint in the Spanish capital in 2004/05. Jurado played with Thiago Motta at Club Atlético de Madrid in 2007/08. • Klaas-Jan Huntelaar spent 2009/10 with Milan, making his debut as a substitute in a 4-0 defeat by Inter. He was a second-half replacement in the second derby of the season, which Inter won 2-0. • Huntelaar is a Netherlands team-mate of Sneijder and the pair were together at AFC Ajax between January 2006 and summer 2007, along with Angelos Charisteas. Besides Raúl, Sneijder played with Christoph Metzelder at the Bernabéu. • Huntelaar came on as a late substitute as the Netherlands beat a Brazil team including Júlio César, Lúcio and Maicon 2-1 in last summer's FIFA World Cup quarter-finals. • Dejan Stanković was in the Serbia team that got the better of 's Germany in the 2010 World Cup group stage. • Yuto Nagatomo and were in the Japan squad that won the AFC Asian Cup in January. • Lúcio spent eight seasons in Germany with Bayer 04 Leverkusen and Bayern, and was a team-mate of Ali Karimi in Munich from 2005 to 2007. • Eto'o was in the Barcelona team that defeated Schalke in the UEFA Champions League quarter-finals in 2007/08. With RCD Mallorca in the 2001/02 UEFA Champions League first group stage, he scored the only goal against Schalke in Germany in September but was sent off 26 minutes into Mallorca's 4-0 home loss in the return the next month. • Huntelaar scored the winning goal in the Netherlands' 2-1 win against Cameroon in the 2010 World Cup group stage after Eto'o had equalised for the African side. • Motta and Ranocchia lined up against Manuel Neuer in the 1-1 friendly draw between Italy and Germany in Dortmund in February. • Ranocchia's Italy drew 1-1 in a friendly against a Romania team including Ciprian Deac and Cristian Chivu in November. • Coutinho was in the Brazil team that ran out 3-0 winners against an Iran side including Karimi in a friendly last October. • Lúcio and Metzelder were on opposing sides in the 2002 World Cup final, the former's Brazil beating Germany 2-0.

Last updated 11/04/11 17:35:38CET 10 Squad list FC Schalke 04 - FC Internazionale Milano Wednesday 13 April 2011 - 20.45CET (20.45 local time) MATCH PRESS KIT Arena AufSchalke, Gelsenkirchen Head coach

FC Schalke 04: Ralf Rangnick Date of birth: 29 June 1958 Nationality: German Playing career: VfB Stuttgart II, Southwick FC, VfR Heilbronn, SSV Ulm 1846, FC Viktoria Backnang, TSV Lippoldsweiler Coaching career: FC Viktoria Backnang, TSV Lippoldsweiler, SC Korb, SSV Reutlingen 1905, SSV Ulm 1846, VfB Stuttgart, , FC Schalke 04 (twice), TSG 1899 Hoffenheim • Ralf Rangnick is a thoughtful, academic coach who is most at home on the training ground. As a player he never made it past the amateur ranks at Stuttgart, but he returned to take charge of their amateur team in 1985 having cut his teeth at regional league side Viktoria Backnang. • Later became the club's youth director before taking over at Reutlingen and then accepting the job at second-tier outfit Ulm in 1997. Having almost guided the part-timers to promotion, Stuttgart made him head coach in 1999, but he failed to bring the same kind of success, although he did win a UEFA Intertoto Cup title in summer 2000 before leaving the following February. • His next stop was Hannover, where he achieved promotion to the first division as champions in 2001/02, his first season – only to be sacked near the end of his third season with the side slipping down the table. Schalke had nonetheless seen enough to appoint him coach early in 2004/05. • Rangnick led the Gelsenkirchen club to the German Cup final and second place in the Bundesliga, but an early UEFA Champions League elimination plus struggles in the league and cup prompted his departure in December 2005. • Took over at Hoffenheim in summer 2006 and went on to lead the club from the third division to the upper reaches of the Bundesliga, where they were established by the time of Rangnick's resignation in January 2011. Two months later, he returned to Schalke, signing a three-year contract the day after Felix Magath's departure.

FC Internazionale Milano: Leonardo Date of birth: 5 September 1969 Nationality: Brazilian Playing career: CR Flamengo (twice), São Paulo FC (three times), Valencia CF, Kashima Antlers, Paris Saint-Germain FC, AC Milan (twice) Coaching career: AC Milan, FC Internazionale Milano • Started out as a left-back but is best known as an attacking . Spent much of his playing career in Brazil, winning the national championship with Flamengo and São Paulo. • Had two-year stints in Spain and Japan before one year with PSG and a successful four-year spell with Milan, from 1997 to 2001. A San Siro crowd favourite, played a key role in Milan winning the Serie A title in 1999. • Earned a FIFA World Cup winners' medal with Brazil as a defender in 1994 but missed the closing stages of the tournament after being sent off in the first knockout round. As a midfielder, helped Brazil finish runners-up to hosts France in the 1998 World Cup and retired with eight goals in 60 international games. • Returned to Milan for the 2002/03 season, his last before retiring, and helped the Rossoneri win the Coppa Italia. Became Milan's technical director in 2008 and was made coach in May 2009 despite having no coaching background. • In his sole season in charge, guided Milan to third place in Serie A and last 16 of UEFA Champions League before stepping down in May 2010. That December, succeeded Rafael Benítez as Inter coach, signing a six-month deal.

UEFA Champions League knockout stage: Did you know? • Teams have recovered from a first-leg deficit to go through on 24 occasions, including FC Barcelona and FC Internazionale Milano in this season's round of 16, although only twice – AFC Ajax's defeat of Panathinaikos FC in the 1995/96 semi-finals and Inter's win against FC Bayern München in the 2010/11 round of 16 – has a side gone through after losing the first leg at home. The biggest losing margin a side has overturned was achieved by RC Deportivo La Coruña in the 2003/04 quarter-finals when they fought back from a 4-1 defeat at AC Milan to win 4-0 at home. • Twenty ties have been decided on the away goals rule, including six where the triumphant team lost the first leg. • FC Bayern München hold the record for the biggest first-leg lead with a 5-0 success at Sporting Clube de Portugal in the 2008/09 first knockout round, eventually going through 12-1 after a 7-1 home victory in the second leg. • Ten ties have now gone to penalties, including the game between Arsenal FC and AS Roma in the 2008/09 round of 16. Five of these were finals – 1996, 2001, 2003, 2005 and 2008. The first two-legged tie decided on spot-kicks was PSV Eindhoven's 4-2 win against Olympique Lyonnais on 13 April 2005 after a 2-2 aggregate draw. • In all, 17 ties have required extra time. So far seven have been decided by extra time alone: four quarter-finals, two first knockout round encounters and the 2007/08 semi-final between Chelsea FC and Liverpool FC. • The 2008/09 last-16 encounter between Bayern and Sporting featured more goals (13) over its two legs than any previous UEFA Champions League knockout tie, Bayern prevailing 12-1. • There has never been a knockout tie ending goalless after two legs. Ten have finished 1-0 on aggregate, most recently Tottenham Hotspur FC's narrow victory against AC Milan in the 2010/11 round of 16. • The biggest European Champion Clubs' Cup quarter-final victory was Real Madrid CF's 8-0 first-leg defeat of Sevilla FC in 1957/58. • Manchester United FC's 7-1 win against AS Roma in 2006/07 is the biggest victory in a UEFA Champions League quarter-final match. The next best are FC Barcelona's 5-1 second-leg defeat of Chelsea FC after extra time (1999/2000), RC Deportivo La Coruña's 4-0 return victory against AC Milan (2003/04) and Barcelona's 5-1 first-leg defeat of FC Shakhtar Donetsk in 2010/11. There were also 4-0 first-leg wins for United against FC Porto (1996/97), Barcelona against FC Bayern München (2008/09) and Real Madrid CF against Tottenham Hotspur FC (2010/11). • Chelsea FC-Liverpool FC in 2008/09 featured 12 goals over the two legs, a quarter-final record. • Clarence Seedorf is the only player to win the European Champion Clubs' Cup with three clubs (AFC Ajax 1995, Real Madrid CF 1998, AC Milan 2003, 2007). Liverpool's Bob Paisley (1977, 1978, 1981) is the only coach to win three times. • (Borussia Dortmund 1997, Bayern 2001), ( 1970, Hamburger SV 1983) and José Mourinho (FC Porto 2004, FC Internazionale Milano 2010) are the only coaches to win the trophy with two clubs. • No team has successfully defended the UEFA Champions League trophy with AC Milan (1989, 1990) the last club to win consecutive European Champion Clubs' Cups. Milan (1994, 1995), Juventus (1996, 1997) and Manchester United (2008, 2009) have all returned to the final as holders only to lose. • Only two teams have ever won – or even reached the final of – the UEFA Champions League on home soil: Borussia Dortmund (1997, final in Munich) and Juventus (1996, final in Rome). Five teams won European Cup finals on home soil: Real Madrid CF (1957), FC Internazionale Milano (1965), Manchester United FC (1968), AFC Ajax (1972) and Liverpool FC (1978), while Stade de Reims Champagne (1956), AS Roma (1984) and FC Barcelona (1986) all lost finals in their own country. UEFA Champions League: Did you know? • S.S. Lazio goalkeeper Marco Ballotta is the oldest player to compete in the UEFA Champions League having been aged 43 years 252 days when he featured against Real Madrid CF on Matchday 6 of the 2007/08 competition. • Filippo Inzaghi is the oldest player to score in the competition, aged 37 years and 87 days, in AC Milan's 2-2 draw against Real Madrid CF on 3 November 2010. • is the youngest player to have appeared. He was 16 years and 87 days when he started for RSC Anderlecht against Steaua on 23 November 1994. He was sent off in the 37th minute.
