“JUST ASK MI ’BOUT BROOKLYN:” WEST INDIAN IDENTITIES, TRANSGEOGRAPHIES, AND LIVING REGGAE CULTURE A Dissertation Presented to the Faculty of the Graduate School of Cornell University In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy by Sabia McCoy-Torres August 2015 © 2015 Sabia McCoy-Torres “JUST ASK MI ’BOUT BROOKLYN:” WEST INDIAN IDENTITIES, TRANSGEOGRAPHIES, AND LIVING REGGAE CULTURE Sabia McCoy-Torres, Ph.D. Cornell University 2015 This ethnography explores the symbiotic relationship between the West Indian Diaspora and performance based, Jamaican originated, reggae culture. The field site was Brooklyn, New York. I analyze the intersections of reggae with racial and cultural identity construction, expressions of gender and sexuality, transnationalism, and place making practices. The formation of a local, West Indian led, reggae related economy is also a subject of focus. In order to theorize the impact West Indians have on Brooklyn and their subjectivities, I develop the concepts transgeographies and figurative citizenship. I argue that the West Indian Diaspora creates transgeographic cultural places that specific sociocultural practices and performance help to form. I offer that performance, action, and material alteration coalesce to physically transform space and imbue it with affect and sensory elements that together constitute links to the various nations of the Caribbean. The West Indian geographies of Brooklyn are thereby brought inside the Caribbean space expanding how geography is conceived of as an analytic. Emergent diasporic subjectivities are formed within these transgeographic cultural places, one of them being what I term figurative citizenship. This work also includes analyses of the relationship of West Indians to U.S.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Be Black Baby a House Party Presents Edouard Glissant: Inhabit his Name Curated by Madeleine Hunt-Ehrlich & Simone Leigh Featuring work by: Vanessa Agard-Jones, Becca Albee, Firelei Báez, Kelly Baker Josephs, Blackgold Dancers, Jayson Keeling, Kaiama Glover, Devin KKenny, Legacy Russell, and Yasmin Spiro Friday June 17, 2011 7-9pm performances; 9pm– 12am dance party with DJ Khary Polk June 17, 2011— For the fourth installment of Be Black Baby, Leigh is collaborating with artist and scholar Madeleine Hunt-Ehrlich to present Edouard Glissant: Inhabit his Name. The evening will track the collapse of contemporary space and follow the individual through the entanglements of language and locale. Taking Glissant's seminal text The Poetics of Relation as a point of departure, artists and thinkers will venture into the many mutations of multilingualism that is creolization. Using the Caribbean as a model of hybrid culture, Inhabit His Name will occupy the realm of the metropolis where those involved in the process and critique of creolization "have made a sudden appearance." * * * Recess organizes and produces Be Black Baby, along with Simone Leigh, series founder and curator. For each iteration, Leigh selects a co-curator. From here, conversations problematize conventions of cultural politics including racial and queer identity. Be Black Baby extends from Recess's mission to highlight the path from idea to fruition. Celebrating the confident individual voice and body, the series takes on a question that may not find an immediate answer. This playful yet rigorous intellectual undertaking evolves into a dance party. International media and the millions of eyes around the world don't care if it's just that one bad apple. We are all being judged by the actions of a handful of individuals, whether it's the politician trying to hide his/her indiscretions, to the hustler that harasses the visitors to our shores. • With Ty Dolla $Ign Is Finally Starting to Catch on with American Audiences, the Singer Only Sees His New Recording Home As a Tool to Push His Movement Forward
August 27, 2015 Kranium And Ty Dolla $ign Premiere The Video For "Nobody Has To Know" "This is not your typical dancehall video." Kranium's "Nobody Has To Know" is one of the most enduring dancehall songs this side of the aughts. Since it first dropped two years ago, it's been a bashment mainstay, perfect for dark corners and sweaty summer nights. The Atlantic signee recently recruited Ty Dolla $ign for a new version, and today he's dropping a video to go along with the DL-themed track. In the brightly hued video, Kranium skillfully evades paparazzi on a hoverboard before scooping his (presumably taken) woman and pulling up to a trailer for a middle-of- nowhere desert romp. Ty Dolla $ign is in the cut too, rolling through on a motorcycle with a fat blunt dangling from his lips. "Videos need to be creative and I think we pulled it off. This is not your typical dancehall video,” Kranium told The FADER over email. Accurate. Watch the video above, and hit the clip below for some behind-the-scenes views. June 15, 2015 Is Dancehall Going To Be Mainstream Again? 13 years after Dutty Rock, people in the music industry are ready to make dancehall pop again. Will they succeed? Once upon a time, Sean Paul was among the biggest pop stars in the world. His tour-de-force 2002 LP, Dutty Rock, charted in the Top 10 both in the US and in the UK. Singles like “Gimmie the Light” and “Get Busy” defined a slice of early aughts pop radio and earned the Jamaican singer a guest feature on Beyoncé’s debut album.

  • Liberated Punks Accelerate China’S Musical Evolution
About blogs Just another WordPress weblog Liberated Punks Accelerate China’s Musical Evolution From Pigface and Ministry to PiL and Killing Joke, drummer Martin Atkins has pounded the skins for some very loud punks. But he didn't realize that China's underground sound would throw him into a time machine and dial it back to the '70s and '80s, when bands were pushing the envelope on conventional rock and not really caring how you felt about it. Atkins shot 80 hours of video from his 2006 trip into Asia's 21st century powerhouse, and chopped it down into the recently released documentary Sixteen Days in China . Listening Post caught up with him to talk about China's greatest bands you've never heard and more. Wired.com: How did your experiences with Ministry and your other bands match up to the scene you witnessed in China? Martin Atkins: I think time and location has more relevance, like London in 1977, New York in 1980 or maybe Chicago 1989. These were cities that had exploding scenes that I managed to be a small part of. Add to that some entrepreneurial what-the-fuck-ness, and there you go! The backdrop is different, but the immersion, the focus on just the music and attitude feels like a definite ripple from those times. It doesn't feel strategized in a careerist way. The guys in D-22, who now have a label called Maybe Mars, and their venue reminded me of the vibe of CBGB's. While I was over there, I saw the club on CNN, and that rang a bell for me.
