Hisham: Umno going through 'revision, transformation' Malaysiakini.com November 20 ,2011 by Hazlan Zakaria Umno vice-president Hishammuddin Hussein has deflected criticisms of "infighting and weak leadership" thrown at the Malay party by former party chief Dr Mahathir Mohamed. "It is not unique to Umno only. I do not deny it, but we are going through the process of revision and transformation," he told reporters when approached on the sidelines of the presidential address session for the party's youth wings, Pemuda and Puteri in PWTC, Kuala Lumpur today. He reasoned that former premier is always known for making waves before the party meets for its annual general assembly. "If you know him, he always makes such remarks prior to an Umno general assembly." However, Hishammuddin reiterated that the Malay-based party is far from sitting still. "Today's attendance and event shows that Umno is moving to solve those problems," assured the Sembrong MP. Meanwhile fellow vice-president Shafie Apdal agreed with Hishammuddin that the party is already moving to address the issue. However, said Shafie, it may not be possible to please everyone, Mahathir included. "We have done a lot in terms of a party unity, it is not easy to fulfill everybody's need and desire," he said when approached at the same function. Umno-owned daily Utusan Malaysia published a hard-hitting exclusive with former premier Mahathir in their Sunday edition today. In it, the former Umno president and premier of 22 years hit out at his own appointed successor Abdullah Ahmad Badawi for purportedly wrecking the party which dominated the ruling BN coalition and Malaysian politics for nigh 54 years. Mahathir accused the present day Umno, which he claimed was still reeling from Abdullah's bad stewardship, "weak" because of "internal infighting" and plagued by a dearth of capable leadership. ISSUE: 2020 No. 3 ISSN 2335-6677 RESEARCHERS AT ISEAS – YUSOF ISHAK INSTITUTE ANALYSE CURRENT EVENTS Singapore |16 January 2020 The Kimanis By-election: A Much-needed Sweet (Manis) Victory for Warisan Lee Poh Onn and Kevin Zhang*1 EXECUTIVE SUMMARY • On 18 January 2020, a by-election will be held for the parliamentary seat of Kimanis in Sabah. The Federal Court has upheld the Election Court's ruling that Anifah Aman's victory in the 14th General Elections (GE14) was nullified by election discrepancies. • This by-election is seen as a referendum on the Warisan state government’s performance over the past 18 months since replacing the Barisan Nasional (BN) after GE14, and the outcome would have some impact on Sabah Chief Minister Shafie Apdal’s standing. Warisan-PH and BN had won an equal number of state seats, but Warisan formed the state government only after the defection of some BN state assemblymen. At the Federal level, the Pakatan Harapan government sorely needs a victory in Kimanis to reverse the trend of by-election defeats it has suffered over the past year. • Warisan began the election contest on a stronger footing but it is shaping up to be a close fight. Both candidates, Warisan’s Karim Bujang and UMNO’s Mohamad Alamin, have strong political experience in Kimanis. • Bread and butter issues matter greatly to Kimanis residents who mostly suffer from low incomes and poor infrastructure. Warisan is on the defensive against the BN’s claims that the state government has failed to bring economic uplift to the area.

UMNO’s New Page: After Najib vs Muhyiddin By Yang Razali Kassim Synopsis The ongoing UMNO general assembly is proving heated amid the twin scandals of 1MDB and party political donation. However it ends, a new page is being opened in the tumultuous history of UMNO. Commentary THE 2015 UMNO General Assembly this week turns a new page in the party’s tumultuous history. It was marked by a tussle between the top two leaders triggered by the twin scandals of 1MDB and political donation affecting the prime minister and UMNO president Najib Razak. Even as the assembly started today (10 Dec 2015) the delegates appeared to be rallying behind the embattled president, while his loyal deputy turned critic, former Deputy Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin, was further sidelined. Najib’s plan to sack him appeared to have been delayed if not pushed back with Muhyiddin retaining his post for now. Denied his traditional platform to speak as party deputy president, Muhyiddin created an alternative gathering of supporters on 7 December with what amounted to his own “pre-assembly curtain raiser.” Complete with the UMNO flag and anthem and telecast live online, Muhyiddin made a forceful address “to save UMNO” at a rally at the Sultan Sulaiman Club, UMNO’s birthplace in 1946, accompanied by former Prime Minister Tun Mahathir Mohamed.

"I am trying to help to get everyone to think of the party first and not the individual," he said after Umno president Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak's closing speech at the party's general assembly here Saturday. Tun Abdullah Ahmad Badawi, who is also a former Umno president, said the party's spirit was stronger this time compared to a few months ago. "I believe there is a big possibility we will obtain a comfortable win," he said. Party vice-president Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal said Najib's closing speech had rejuvenated the spirit of party members before facing the general election. "The most important part is that if one is selected as candidate, all party members must support that person," he said. Kelantan Umno liaison chairman Datuk Seri Mustapa Mohamed said the country would have to face many problems if the people gave the Opposition a chance to rule them. "What is important now is our struggle, which has to be based on unity," he said. Perlis Umno liaison committee chairman Datuk Seri Md Isa Sabu said members must follow whatever was decided by the party, including the choice of election candidates.
