Hanging on to the Edges Hanging on to the Edges
DANIEL NETTLE Hanging on to the Edges Hanging on to the Edges Essays on Science, Society and the Academic Life D ANIEL Essays on Science, Society I love this book. I love the essays and I love the overall form. Reading these essays feels like entering into the best kind of intellectual conversati on—it makes me want and the Academic Life to write essays in reply. It makes me want to get everyone else reading it. I almost N never feel this enthusiasti c about a book. ETTLE —Rebecca Saxe, Professor of Cogniti ve Science at MIT What does it mean to be a scien st working today; specifi cally, a scien st whose subject ma er is human life? Scien sts o en overstate their claim to certainty, sor ng the world into categorical dis nc ons that obstruct rather than clarify its complexi es. In this book Daniel Ne le urges the reader to unpick such DANIEL NETTLE dis nc ons—biological versus social sciences, mind versus body, and nature versus nurture—and look instead for the for puzzles and anomalies, the points of Hanging on to the Edges connec on and overlap. These essays, converted from o en humorous, some mes autobiographical blog posts, form an extended medita on on the possibili es and frustra ons of the life scien fi c. Introducing Civil Law Students to Common Law Legal Method Through Contract Law
641 Introducing Civil Law Students to Common Law Legal Method Through Contract Law Charles R. Calleros I. Introduction The Common Law Program at Université René Descartes in Paris introduces students trained in the civil law to common law doctrine and legal method through a series of English-language mini-courses offered every other week by visiting faculty from common law countries throughout the world. Beginning in the 2001–02 academic year through Fall, 2007, I had the honor and pleasure of teaching the opening course in this program.1 My pedagogic goals in this course included: • Introduce the students to fundamental elements of common law legal method in order to better prepare them for all the common law courses; • Use the issue of reciprocal inducement, within the common law doctrine of consideration, as both a vehicle for developing facility with legal method and as an exercise in comparative law; and • Expose students to both traditional and innovative American teaching techniques, as a further means of providing students with a comparative experience. To meet these goals, I led the students in a number of interactive exercises, some of them set in non-legal contexts so that the students focused all their attention on the legal method those exercises illustrated. Whether set in legal or non-legal contexts, these exercises required students to recognize and accept uncertainty in legal disputes, appreciate the role of stare decisis, and develop opposing arguments from facts and precedent. Others who teach the common law method to students from other legal traditions, either abroad or in U.S. -
Public Notice of the Adoption of County Road Map
PUBLIC NOTICE OF THE ADOPTION OF COUNTY ROAD MAP Pursuant to Article 258.005 of the Texas Transportation Code, the Commissioners Court of Walker County, Texas provides this notice to the public of the adoption of a County Road Map on December 22, 2008, including each road in which the County claims the continued existence of a public interest and right of access and egress for maintenance of an existing County Road. A County Road Map including each road or portions of each road in which the County claims a public interest is available for inspection at the County Clerk’s Office at the Walker County Courthouse. The Commissioners Court conducted numerous hearings prior to the adoption of the County Road Map on December 22, 2008. A list of the roads included in the adoption is included herein; however, the failure to include a road in which the county has previously acquired a public interest by purchase, condemnation, dedication, or a court's final judgment of adverse possession, or any other legal means does not affect the status of the omitted road. A person asserting a private right, title, or interest in a road in which the existence of a public interest is asserted may contest the inclusion of the road in the county road map by filing a suit in a district court in the county in which the road is located not later than January 1, 2018, said date exceeding the second anniversary of the date of this final notice. Summary of Amendments to Lake Conroe Rules and Regulations
SUMMARY OF AMENDMENTS TO LAKE CONROE RULES AND REGULATIONS SJRA welcomes any comments or questions concerning the proposed amendments to the Lake Conroe Reservoir Rules and Regulation. Please feel free to submit them to [email protected] by May 15, 2015. The Lake Conroe Rules and Regulations (the "Rules") were last amended on August 28, 2003. The proposed amendments reformat and restructure the Rules. This allows for reference to specific Rule provisions by Chapter, Section, Subsection and Subdivision. The revisions were requested by Montgomery County law enforcement so that citations could be issued with reference(s) to the specific provisions of the Rules. Aside from reformatting and restructuring the Rules, the proposed amendments make the following substantive revisions to the Rules (summarized below by Chapter): 1. Definitions. Certain definitions were added or clarified. Notably, the term "Private Structure" was added to refer to a basin, pier, wharf, floating structure, boat dock, or any other structure providing for anchorage or storage of Vessels that is privately owned or operated and not associated with a commercial operation. A "Marina" is defined to apply to the same types of structures, with the difference being that they are associated with a commercial operation. The term "Encroachment" is revised to refer to any structure, building, appurtenance or other fixture permanently placed upon Authority land, that cannot be immediately removed from Authority land, or that otherwise infringes upon the rights of the Authority in and to Authority land. 2. Boating. The proposed amendments specify the various federal and state laws and regulations that apply to the operation of boats and vessels on Lake Conroe. -
The Life and Times of Karola Szilvássy, Transylvanian Aristocrat and Modern Woman*
Cristian, Réka M.. “The Life and Times of Karola Szilvássy, A Transylvanian Aristocrat and Modern Woman.” Hungarian Cultural Studies. e-Journal of the American Hungarian Educators Association, Volume 12 (2019) DOI: 10.5195/ahea.2019.359 The Life and Times of Karola Szilvássy, Transylvanian Aristocrat and Modern Woman* Réka M. Cristian Abstract: In this study Cristian surveys the life and work of Baroness Elemérné Bornemissza, née Karola Szilvássy (1876 – 1948), an internationalist Transylvanian aristocrat, primarily known as the famous literary patron of Erdélyi Helikon and lifelong muse of Count Miklós Bánffy de Losoncz, who immortalized her through the character of Adrienne Milóth in his Erdélyi trilógia [‘The Transylvanian Trilogy’]. Research on Karola Szilvássy is still scarce with little known about the life of this maverick woman, who did not comply with the norms of her society. She was an actress and film director during the silent film era, courageous nurse in the World War I, as well as unusual fashion trendsetter, gourmet cookbook writer, Africa traveler—in short, a source of inspiration for many women of her time, and after. Keywords: Karola Szilvássy, Miklós Bánffy, János Kemény, Zoltán Óváry, Transylvanian aristocracy, modern woman, suffrage, polyglot, cosmopolitan, Erdélyi Helikon Biography: Réka M. Cristian is Associate Professor, Chair of the American Studies Department, University of Szeged, and Co-chair of the university’s Inter-American Research Center. She is author of Cultural Vistas and Sites of Identity: Literature, Film and American Studies (2011), co-author (with Zoltán Dragon) of Encounters of the Filmic Kind: Guidebook to Film Theories (2008), and general editor of AMERICANA E-Journal of American Studies in Hungary, as well as its e-book division, AMERICANA eBooks.
