Intercultural Communication Studies XVII: 2 2008 Cheang Choice of Foreign Names as a Strategy for Identity Management Justina Cheang, University of Macau Regardless of the fact that Macau’s dominating population are Chinese, English names, or to be more exact, foreign names, are favored and widely used, be it in the businesses, the government, or education institutions. Though Chinese (Cantonese) is spoken by most in the city, local Chinese people’s favor in the use of English/foreign names, whether they are students, civil servants, or working in the business, does reflect their taste and their desired image to be displayed to others. Interviews are conducted showing that people’s choice of English/foreign names are somehow a strategy for identity management – certain names are chosen to show a pleasant personality, or other desirable qualities that they wanted to project to others. It is interesting to note that, other than English names, people would choose Portuguese names, Japanese names, names of things (non-proper names), or even people’s own creation for use. A Chinese saying: “One does not fear if he/she has a bad fate; what one fears most is to be given a bad name.” Rather than a Chinese saying, this should also be a universal consideration when most parents all over the world are finding names for their children. Most people get their names when they are born, and very often they themselves are not involved in the decision-making. What if we get a chance to decide on our own name? To get a name by oneself is probably a very unique trend in Asia, and especially, the Chinese communities. -

The European Union’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) imposes strict restrictions on processing and sharing of personal data of EU residents. Both contemporary news reports and simple bilateral bargaining theory predict reduction in data usage at the application layer would negatively impact incentives for negotiating interconnection agreements at the internet layer due to reduced bargaining power of European networks and increased bargaining frictions. -

Cultural Assimilation during the Age of Mass Migration* Ran Abramitzky Leah Boustan Katherine Eriksson Stanford University and NBER UCLA and NBER UC Davis and NBER November 2015 We document that immigrants achieved a substantial amount of cultural assimilation during the Age of Mass Migration, a formative period in US history. Many immigrants learned to speak English, applied for US citizenship, and married spouses from different origins. Immigrants also chose less foreign names for their sons and daughters as they spent more time in the US. Possessing a foreign name had adverse consequences for the children of immigrants. Linking over one million records across historical Censuses, we find that brothers with more foreign names completed fewer years of schooling, were more likely to be unemployed, earned less, and were less likely to work in a white collar occupation. * We are grateful for the access to Census manuscripts provided by Ancestry.com, FamilySearch.org and the Minnesota Population Center. (Signature, Date) Abstract This thesis aims to provide a comprehensive and systematic analysis about the growing popularity of Korean pop music (K-pop) worldwide in recent years. On one hand, the international expansion of K-pop can be understood as a result of the strategic planning and business execution that are created and carried out by the entertainment agencies. On the other hand, external circumstances such as the rise of social media also create a wide array of opportunities for K-pop to broaden its global appeal. The research explores the ways how the interplay between external circumstances and organizational strategies has jointly contributed to the global circulation of K-pop. The research starts with providing a general descriptive overview of K-pop. Following that, quantitative methods are applied to measure and assess the international recognition and global spread of K-pop. Next, a systematic approach is used to identify and analyze factors and forces that have important influences and implications on K-pop’s globalization. The analysis is carried out based on three levels of business environment which are macro, operating, and internal level. PEST analysis is applied to identify critical macro-environmental factors including political, economic, socio-cultural, and technological. -
Identity Under Japanese Occupation
1 “BECOMING JAPANESE:” IDENTITY UNDER JAPANESE OCCUPATION GRADES: 9-12 AUTHOR: Katherine Murphy TOPIC/THEME: Japanese Occupation, World War II, Korean Culture, Identity TIME REQUIRED: Two 60-minute periods BACKGROUND: The lesson is based on the impact of the Japanese occupation of Korea during World War II on Korean culture and identity. In particular, the lesson focuses on the Japanese campaign in 1940 to encourage Koreans to abandon their Korean names and adopt Japanese names. This campaign was known as “sōshi-kaimei." The purpose of this campaign, along with campaigns requiring Koreans to recite an oath to the Japanese Emperor and bow at Shinto shrines, were to make the Korean people “Japanese” and hopefully, loyal subjects of the Japanese Empire by abandoning their Korean identity and loyalties. These cultural policies and campaigns were key to the Japanese war effort during World War II. The lesson draws from the students’ lives as well as two books: Lost Names: Scenes from a Korean Boyhood by Richard E. Kim and Under the Black Umbrella: Voices from Colonial Korea 1910-1945 by Hildi Kang. CURRICULUM CONNECTION: The lesson is intended to use the major themes from the summer reading book Lost Names: Scenes from a Korean Boyhood to introduce students to one of the five essential questions of the World History II course: How is identity constructed? How does identity impact human experience? In first investigating the origin of their own names and the meaning of Korean names, students can begin to explore the question “How is identity constructed?’ In examining how and why the Japanese sought to change the Korean people’s names, religion, etc during World War II, students will understand how global events such as World War II can impact an individual.
