Union/Disunion by Kirsten Johnson Union/Disunion By Kirsten Johnson Union/Disunion was inspired by the wonderful work the European Union does to further peace and the common good (the EU won the Nobel Peace Prize in 2012) and the UK referendum to leave the EU (which has been a source of tension). Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz’ (1646-1716) writings on Harmony/Disharmony are portrayed in this work by the more consonant harmonies heard in the ‘Union’ sections and the dissonances used in the ‘Disunion’ sections. The more harmonic ‘union’ sections reference the national anthems of the six founding members of the European Coal and Steel Community of 1950: Germany, France, Italy, Belgium, Luxembourg, the Netherlands*; as well as the UK’s national anthem. The more dissonant sections are based on a 12-tone row framed around the UK national anthem but with sets taken out and groups of pitches juxtaposed against one another. Leibniz’ writing on prime numbers, especially the number 7, have influenced the piece in several ways. Firstly, musical phrases are mapped out as 7-bar phrases. Secondly, the meter in the first section is 7/4 and then 7/8 in the faster section which follows. Thirdly, intervals of major, minor and diminished sevenths are used at all cadence points. Other prime intervals, such as 11ths and 13ths, also feature throughout. Lastly, seven national melodies are used. *The Netherlands: Wilhelmus van Nassouwe Germany: Deutschlandlied Belgium: La Brabançonne France: La Marseillaise Italy: Il Canto degli Italiani Luxembourg: Ons Heemecht United Kingdom: God Save the Queen ©KIRSTEN JOHNSON .

  • Deutschlandlied, Nationalhymne Und Verfassungstreue Oder: Später Dank an Schulleitung Und Lehrerkollegium

Having played the instru- ment for, then, almost two decades, I thought that a novelist would not, could not, feature specialty instruments such as the C-melody sax if he did not play the horn himself. Once the saxophone had caught my attention, I noticed all sorts of uncommon references that seemed to confirm my hunch that Thomas Pynchon himself played the instrument: McClintic Sphere’s 4½ reed, the contra- bass sax of Against the Day, Gravity’s Rainbow’s Charlie Parker passage.

Il messaggio trasmesso dagli inni nazionali Il caso di Unione indiana e Bangladesh Donatella Dolcini doi: http://dx.doi.org/10.7359/826-2017-dolc Abstract As a National Anthem is a symbol of the Nation it represents, the messages it conveys must impart a clear knowledge of the State itself. After briefly examin- ing the nature and the meanings of these messages in the national anthems of some ‘Western’ countries, this dissertation focuses the case of Indian Union and Bangladesh. Due to the factitious creation of both the States from the unitary body of historic India, in fact, their national anthems unusually share the same author: the worldwide famous Bengali poet Rabindranath Tagore. Being born in Kolkata (1861) and having died in Santiniketan 1 (1941), i.e. before the Bengal was dismembered into Indian Union and Pakistan in 1947, he remained his whole life simply a Bengali man, thus belonging to both Nations at the same time. Parole chiave: Bangladesh, India, inni, messaggi, Tagore. Keywords: anthems, Bangladesh, India, messages, Tagore. 1. • Le Origini Il Debutto Dai Moti Del 1848 All'impresa Dei Mille

  • The Greek Marseillaise of Rhigas Velestinlis
THE GREEK MARSEILLAISE OF RHIGAS VELESTINLIS The Court archives of the investigation held at Vienna on Rhigas’ arrest turn our attention to a re-study of the subject, even if we lacked all other evi dence about his having composed A poem, which is A free version, or A mere imitation of the French Marseillaise.1 In the reports of the Austrian examiner it is recorded that, as appears from the testimony of Dr. Demetrios Nicolides, one of the principal persons among those accused, and as confirmed by the statements of those indicted with him, the “conspirators” meeting at Argenti’s home sang, besides Rhigas’ War March, some strophes of the Marseillaise Allons enfants.г Elsewhere, from the testimony of Kaspar Peters, instructor in French, the Austrian inquiry brings to light that Philip Petrovich, the youngest and most enthusiastic of Rhigas’ companions, asked of Peters (as Petrovich himself knew no French),'to translate into German apparently the text of the Marseillaise. Peters promised, but in the end only copied the text, which he handed over to Petrovich.13 2 Rhigas followed the events of the French Revolution with anxious inter est, as he drew his political ideology from it, and relied on its contribution for the liberation of Greece. So he used to instil his revolutionary spirit into his comrades by applying the music of French rebel songs to free renderings of them into Greek, or to verses of his own inspiration. It would seam strange to us if he had ignored, or passed over in silence the renowned revolutionary 1.

Unlike you, the virus is invisible. During these terrible and uncertain times, stop waving rosaries and criticizing the performance of our Government, which is yours too. Have the decency for once to go out on your balcony and sing “Fratelli D’Italia”. But I ask you: do you know the words? For the past two weeks, ever since Prime Minister Conte declared a national lockdown to keep Italians at home as the most efficient protection against coronavirus, every evening at 6 PM all over the country, citizens have been coming spontaneously to their windows or out on their balconies and terraces to sing the national anthem. Up to then the only times Italians had regularly done this was in stadiums’ grandstands before international soccer games.
