Introduction Rotokare Scenic Reserve is situated 12 km east of Eltham, South Taranaki, and is a popular recreation area for boating, walking and enjoying the scenery. The reserve consists of 230 ha of forested hill country, including a 17.8 ha lake and extensive wetland. Lake Rotokare is within the tribal area of the Ngati Ruanui and Ngati Tupaea people who used the area to collect food. Mature forested areas provide habitat for many birds including the fern bird (Sphenoeacus fulvus) and spotless crake (Porzana tabuensis), while the banded kokopu (Galaxias fasciatus) and eels (Anguilla australis schmidtii and Anguilla dieffenbachii) are found in streams and the lake, and the gold‐striped gecko (Hoplodactylus chrysosireticus) in the flax margins. In 2004 a broad group of users of the reserve established the Lake Rotokare Scenic Reserve Trust with the following mission statements: “To achieve the highest possible standard of pest control/eradication with or without a pest‐proof fence and to achieve a mainland island” “To have due regard for recreational users of Lake Rotokare Scenic Reserve” The Trust has raised funds and erected a predator exclusion fence around the 8.4 km reserve perimeter.

This study was carried out in 2000–2004 on strawberry plantations in Tukums, Rîga, Do- bele, and Limbaþi districts. Insects were collected from strawberry fields by pitfall trapping, sweep netting and leaf sampling methods. A total of 137 insect species belonging to seven orders and 41 families were identified to species. Of the phytophagous insects, the order Orthoptera was represented by one species, other orders by a larger number of species: Hymenoptera (3), Dip- tera (16), Lepidoptera (20), Thysanoptera (21), Hemiptera (39), and Coleoptera (37). Of the re- corded insects, 48 species have a status of general strawberry pests. Key words: Fragaria × ananassa, strawberry pests, insect diversity. INTRODUCTION planted in rows with 30-cm distance between plants and 100-cm distance between rows. In the period from June 1 to Strawberries are one of the commercially important crop September 30 in 2000–2004, random sweep netting plants in Latvia. Cholevinae (Kirby, 1837) is a subfamily of Leiodidae (Coleoptera). Cholevinae species live in caves or nests and tunnels of mammals and ants. These insects are non-specialised saprophagous beetles. The larvae feed from decaying animal matter, they eat the fungal spores and mycelium. The Cholevinae species have their own time schedule of when they feed on decaying matter. Some like ‘fresh’ decaying matter, others wait till there is hardly any matter left. These varied preferences could lead to different mouth and/or jaw developments. Other specifc morphologies are due to isolation. Living in caves or animal nests causes many morphological modifcations, these modifcations are called troglomorphic characteristics. Possible troglomorphic characteristics are: lengthening of appendages, loss of pigment, modifcation of eyes, modifed olfactory sensory organs, extra sensory structures and elongated legs (used as feelers). Identifcation of the species is not easy. The beetles and larvae are small to very small (0.8 – 9 mm), brown, grey or black. The differences between adult species are very subtle. This also applies to the larvae. The larvae have an elongated body, long legs, striking cerci and ten abdominal segments. It is known that the larvae of Cholevinae have three larval instars.
