My role is to lead the laboratory’s work on joint anthropological and genetic studies in Turkey. Education 1995 Ph.D. (summa cum laude) University of Ankara. Thesis title: “Morphometric Study on the Occlusal Surfaces of Hominoid Molar Teeth from Paşalar, Turkey”, 738 p. Supervisor Prof. Peter Andrews, Natural History Museum, London. 1988 MA degree (summa cum laude), University of Ankara. Thesis: “Comparative Study of the Neogene Fauna (Mammalia) in Turkey”, 288p. (in Turkish). 1980 – 1984 B.A. degree, Dept. of Physical and Palaeoanthropology, Univ. of Ankara. Professional Experience Active Genetic Projects 2008 – present, working with Ron Pinhasi (beginning 2008) and later David Reich as well (beginning of 2013) on ancient DNA studies of population transformations in Anatolia and Southeastern Europe. My collaboration with Prof. Reich’s lab has become a central component of my work, and as a result I became a Scientific Associate of the laboratory in 2017 and travel extensively as part of this collaborative set of projects. [https://reich.hms.harvard.edu/people]. This work has already produced 5 co authored papers, including our last paper at Nature in which I am second listed-author. 1998 – present, coordination of anthropological and genetic analyses of ancient skeletons (I am an expert not only in morphological analysis of ancient skeletons, but also in identifying skeletal material for DNA analysis). I was involved in an important way in a key innovation in ancient DNA that was published in 2015, which was the discovery of the petrous bone of the skull as a highly useful type of bone for DNA analysis. 1993 – present, working as a physical anthropologist focusing on palaeodemography, palaeopathology, behavior, diet, and mortuary practices, especially in early sedentary communities of Anatolia and Southeast Europe. In addition participating in ancient DNA and isotope studies. In this capacity I take part in various prehistoric settlement excavations (see ‘present projects’) directed by Zafer Derin, Aegean University, Izmir; Necmi Karul, Univ. of Istanbul; Krassimir Leshtakov, Univ. of Sofia; by Nedko Elenski, Museum of Veliko Tarnovo, Georgi Ganetovski, Museum of Vratsa; Stanislav Iliev, Museum of Haskovo. I furthermore cooperate with Vanica Veljanovska, anthropologist at the Nat. Hist. Museum of Skopje, Macedonia. Since 2016, I have participated in excavations headed by Nihat Erdoğan, director of the Mardin Museum (Southeast Turkey), Ayşe Acar from the Anthropology Dept. of Artuklu Univ. in Mardin and in a (Late) Antique research project in collaboration with Mustafa Şahin, head of the Archaeological Dept., Uludağ Univ. Bursa, including a Roman theatre and an Early Christian basilica. Since 2018, I have also collaborated on ancient DNA studies with colleagues from the Anthropology Department of Ankara University. 2000 Guest lecturer giving a workshop for advanced undergraduate classes on the “Introduction to anthropology” and “Anthropological method and theory" at the Depart. of Archaeology and History of Art, Bilkent Univ., Ankara. 1997 – 1999 Guest researcher at the Anatomy Dept., Medical Faculty, Leiden Univ., The Netherlands. 1990 – 1993 Scientific staff member at the Department of Research, Planning and Coordination in the Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources, Ankara. 1984 –‘90, ’93 – ‘97 Palaeontologist, curator of the Palaeontology section at the Natural History Museum of the Institute of Mineral Research and Explorations (MTA General Directorate) Ankara. Between 1994-1997 I was abroad working on my PhD thesis and scientific research. Past field work and projects Osteo-archaeological research 2009-2015 Collaboration with professor Malcolm Lillie and his team from Hull University (UK) on stable isotope studies of prehistoric bone material from Turkey and Bulgaria. We are continuing to work together on publishing the results. 2011-2016 Collaborator of the European Research Council project No. 263441 entitled From the earliest modern humans to the onset of farming (45,000-4,500 BP)" Project director professor Ron Pinhasi, Dept. of Anthropology, University of Vienna: "the role of climate, life-style, health, migration and selection in shaping European population history”. In this project I am involved in DNA and stable isotope analysis of human skeletons from Neolithic populations in West Anatolia and Southeast Europe. Collaboration on publishing the results continues. 2004-2015 Excavations at the multi-period site Çadır höyük, Yozgat / Turkey (in collaboration with various American Universities). 2 2011-2015 Excavations at the Late Neolithic site Barcın höyük (The Netherlands Institute for the Near East, Leiden / Istanbul). 2007 – 2013 Excavations at the Early Neolithic site of Yabalkovo / Bulgaria (Univ. of Sofia) 2005 – 2006 Excavations at Barcın höyük, Bursa (The Netherlands Institute for the Near East, Leiden / Istanbul). 2000 – 2004 Excavations at the Bronze Age cemetery of Harmanören, Göndürle höyük, Isparta (Univ. of Istanbul). 1989 – 2002 Excavations at the Late Neolithic site Ilıpınar höyük, Bursa (The Netherlands Institute for the Near East, Leiden / Istanbul) 1996 - 2000 Excavations at the Late Neolithic site Menteşe höyük, Bursa (The Netherlands Institute for the Near East, Leiden / Istanbul.
