SUMMER, 1979 i The President’s M essage

Mid-term of the administration — what do you want your president to tell you? There are more than likely 15,000 suggestions, so 1 will suggest some of the most important bits of information that we need to recapitulate. First, may I say the Seventy-fifth Anniversary celebration at The Greenbrier. March 29-31. was more than I expected. The hostess district. Southern, really did an outstanding job; all participants in the program were great — it was evident that cooperation was the keyword throughout the entire convention. I have had in these two days since convention over 100 requests for a copy of Dr. Haggai's speech, to me this interest shows that our West Virginia clubwomen are truly concerned about the SURVIVAL OF OUR NATION. Let’s keep the beautiful memories of 1978-79 and now begin our vital work for 1979-80. Members are now more aware of their personal health and especially weight loss. We must keep this program going. At our convention the three top contestants in ihe weight loss contest had lost 193 pounds in eleven months. Have a weigh-in of interested participants'now and see how much excess weight we can lose — our health depends upon it. Club members have become • more conscious of social problems: child abuse, teenage pregnancies, rape, shoplifting, MKS. HERSEL M. Awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Literature in 1932, for her novel, , and the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1938 for the high quality of her literary craftsmanship, she wrote 105 books, plus short stories, articles, speeches, and plays.

The restored Birthplace and the restored barn are both on the National Register of Historic Places. Restoration sponsors were the Pearl S. Buck Birthplace Foundation, Inc., The West Virginia Federation of Women's Clubs, and the United States Department of the Interior, National Park Service, Bureau of the National Register.

The exciting work of rebuilding the Sydenstricker Mouse (birthplace and home of Pearl Buck's fatner and his ancestors) at the Birthplace for use as a Cultural Center is well underway. This is a tremendous addition to the Birthplace.

Buck birthplace restoration. This has now been accomplished by the West Virginia Federation of Women’s Clubs. The latest project is the restoration of the Sydenstricker House, home of Miss Buck’s father and grandfather. It will be moved near Hillsboro and used as a museum and cultural center. The West Virginia Coloring book has eighty pages and part of the money raised goes to the fund. Sixty-five books were presented to the sixth grade at the Shepherdstown graded school. Prizes will be awarded to the three best books colored — a project of education and fun while raising funds. Mrs. Sam Skinner, chairman of the project, was Eastern District president when the Pearl Buck project was started and was a member of the original committee.
