The Subversive Songs of Bossa Nova: Tom Jobim in the Era of Censorship Irna Priore and Chris Stover OSSA nova flourished in Brazil at the end of the 1950s. This was a time of rapid Bdevelopment and economic prosperity in the country, following President Jucelino Kubitschek’s 1956 proclamation of “fifty years of progress in five,” but after the 1964 coup d’état, when General Humberto Castello Branco’s military regime took control of Brazil, the positive energy of the bossa nova era quickly dissipated.1 Soon after the 1964 coup the atmosphere changed: civil rights were suppressed, political dissent was silenced, and many outspoken singer-songwriters, authors and playwrights, journalists, and academics were censored, arrested, and imprisoned. First-generation bossa nova artists, however, were able to avoid such persecution because their music was generally perceived as apolitical.2 This essay challenges this perception by analyzing the ways in which iconic bossa nova composer Antônio Carlos (“Tom”) Jobim inscribed subversive political thought through musical syntax and lyrical allegory in several of his post-1964 songs. We begin by providing a brief overview of the socio-political history of 1960s Brazil, considering some general features of the Brazilian protest song (canção engajada) before focusing on Chico Buarque’s anthemic “Roda viva” as an exemplar of that style. We then move to a detailed examination of the Jobim compositions “Sabiá” and “Ligia,” the lyrics to both of which speak of love, longing, and saudade in the manner of many bossa nova songs, but within which can be found incisive (if carefully coded) critiques of the Castello Branco government.

With her latest, A Sleepin’ Bee (due out October 6 on her own Dotted i Records), Kinhan once again steers herself in unexpected directions with a new release that is at once the first all-standards collection of her career, a loving tribute to legendary vocalist Nancy Wilson, and unmistakably a Lauren Kinhan album – with all the unique perspective and idiosyncratic personality that has come to imply. If the sudden appearance of an album’s worth of standards in a catalogue dominated by original songs comes as a surprise, the process of its creation is just as atypical.

Laurence Hobgood "One of the *inest pianists out there. Period." --All About Jazz “ . one of the most incredible pianists I’ve ever heard.” --Dave Brubeck "Welcome to a new piano star . Laurence Hobgood . --The Independent (UK) Best known for his collaboration with vocalist Kurt Elling, multiple Grammy-nominee and 2010 Grammy-winner Laurence Hobgood has enjoyed a multi-faceted and dynamic career. Musical Director for Elling since 1995, he’s played on, composed, arranged and co-produced all of Elling’s CDs (six for Blue Note and three for Concord), each Grammy- nominated. 2009’s Dedicated To You: Kurt Elling Sings The Music Of Coltrane and Hartman, recorded live at Lincoln Center, won the 2010 Grammy Award for Best Vocal Jazz Record. Hobgood began formal piano study at age six in Dallas, Texas, where his father was Chairman of the Southern Methodist University theatre program. At age 12, he was introduced to gospel and blues through his family's church. Several years later, after moving to Illinois, he began formal training in jazz. He attended the University of Illinois, where he played for three years in the "A" jazz ensemble led by John Garvey. During that time his classical study continued with Ian Hobson. After moving to Chicago in 1988, he established a local presence leading his own quintet and joining forces with some of Chicago's premier players, including Ed Peterson, Fareed Haque, and most importantly seven-time Grammy Award-winning drummer, Paul Wertico. The group, Trio New, with Hobgood, Wertico, and bassist Eric Hochberg, played to critical acclaim and established a serious connection with Wertico that spans many projects and ensembles.

  • Discography of the Mainstream Label
Discography of the Mainstream Label Mainstream was founded in 1964 by Bob Shad, and in its early history reissued material from Commodore Records and Time Records in addition to some new jazz material. The label released Big Brother & the Holding Company's first material in 1967, as well as The Amboy Dukes' first albums, whose guitarist, Ted Nugent, would become a successful solo artist in the 1970s. Shad died in 1985, and his daughter, Tamara Shad, licensed its back catalogue for reissues. In 1991 it was resurrected in order to reissue much of its holdings on compact disc, and in 1993, it was purchased by Sony subsidiary Legacy Records. 56000/6000 Series 56000 mono, S 6000 stereo - The Commodore Recordings 1939, 1944 - Billy Holiday [1964] Strange Fruit/She’s Funny That Way/Fine and Mellow/Embraceable You/I’ll Get By//Lover Come Back to Me/I Cover the Waterfront/Yesterdays/I Gotta Right to Sing the Blues/I’ll Be Seeing You 56001 mono, S 6001 stereo - Begin the Beguine - Eddie Heywood [1964] Begin the Beguine/Downtown Cafe Boogie/I Can't Believe That You're in Love with Me/Carry Me Back to Old Virginny/Uptown Cafe Boogie/Love Me Or Leave Me/Lover Man/Save Your Sorrow 56002 mono, S 6002 stereo - Influence of Five - Hawkins, Young & Others [1964] Smack/My Ideal/Indiana/These Foolish Things/Memories Of You/I Got Rhythm/Way Down Yonder In New Orleans/Stardust/Sittin' In/Just A Riff 56003 mono, S 6003 stereo - Dixieland-New Orleans - Teagarden, Davison & Others [1964] That’s A- Plenty/Panama/Ugly Chile/Riverboat Shuffle/Royal Garden Blues/Clarinet

  • A JAZZ ODYSSEY: MY LIFE in JAZZ by Oscar Peterson
A JAZZ ODYSSEY: MY LIFE IN JAZZ by Oscar Peterson. Continuum, 382pp, $39.95. Reviewed by John Clare ___________________________________________________________ [This review appeared in the Sydney Morning Herald on August 30, 2003.] scar Peterson could make the piano ring with brilliant clarity in all its registers. His command of the jazz vocabulary was magisterial, his swing and O inventive flow almost frightening at times. He has suffered a stroke, but still plays beautifully. His fans are legion. He has been invited into the homes of European nobility to play a treasured instrument after dinner. The head of Steinway sent a piano of his own choosing for Peterson to try when he heard the musician was looking for a new instrument. This is Oscar Peterson's story in his own words. For fans it will deliver uniform satisfaction. For those who do not count him among their three or four favourite jazz pianists, some sections may seem rather cosy and clubby, particularly the chapters dealing with his long stint in impresario Norman Granz's travelling jam session, otherwise known as Jazz at the Philharmonic (JATP). 1 Some sections may seem rather cosy and clubby, particularly the chapters dealing with Peterson’s long stint in Jazz at the Philharmonic (JATP), organised by impresario Norman Granz (above)… Peterson is intelligent and articulate, and there is a beautifully described scene - a kind of still life within a moving bus - that will bring touring life vividly back to anyone who has been down that road. There are also accounts of pranks - typically involving fart cushions in lifts - where you realise you had to be there but are glad you weren't.
