On behalf of the administration, staff and students, I would like to congratulate the 2015 inductees into the St. Mary High School Athletic Hall of Fame. From my vantage point as the new principal , FRXOGQ·W KHOS EHLQJ VWUXFN E\ KRZ FORVHO\ WKH ideals and goals of the Hall of Fame coincide with my impressions of the St. Mary community as a whole.

By definition, a Hall of Fame is a celebration of tradition and excellence. The pursuit of excellence has always been at the forefront of all aspects of life here at St. Mary HS, be it athletics, academics or the development of character. In all these areas, the traditions developed here over many decades echo throughout the halls today.

The celebration of new inductees into the Hall of Fame becomes another link which ties the excellence of past achievement with the goals and aspirations of our students today.

This Hall of Fame induction celebrates athletic achievement, of being remembered among the great athletes and contributors at St. Mary HS. Behind that achievement of notable results, we also celebrate the dedication, commitment and hard work it takes to be successful, in athletics and life. Be it a great team or outstanding individual that we applaud, we acknowledge the persistence of effort necessary for achieving that success. No greater lesson can be passed down to all of our students.

Once again congratulations and thank you for being outstanding examples and an integral part of our St. Mary community.

Go Gaels!

Blessings,

Joseph Smith St. Mary Alumni Association Hall of Fame Committee

The St. Mary Athletic Hall of Fame Committee is very honored to welcome you to its 20th Induction Banquet. It will be difficult to surpass the success of our last Banquet, but many months of hard work have gone into preparing tonight’s festivities.

After the outpouring of goodwill produced at the last Banquet, the Hall of Fame Committee went back to work on nominating candidates. Dozens of hours were spent reviewing articles in the local newspapers detailing the athletic exploits of the candidates. The actual voting on tonight’s inductees was preceded by the presentation of written and oral biographies on each of the candidates. By subjecting the candidates to this “crucible” of scrutiny, we believe that we have found an illustrious group of Inductee s.

The work of the Hall of Fame Committee goes on throughout the entire year, and we welcome comments, suggestions and recommendations of interested Alumni and friends.

St. Mary Alumni Association and its Athletic Hall of Fame extend their warm congratulations to this years Inductees, and wish them and their families continued happiness and good fortune.

Very Truly Yours,

Marc A. Morrone – 1997

Marc Morrone was certainly a force to be reckoned with during his four years at St. Mary High School in the mid-90’s. A three sport athlete, Marc was always in the forefront as a playmaker, leader and teammate. Our inductee began his varsity football career with a start on Thanksgiving day in 1993 in his freshman year. In football Marc was a letter winner in his sophomore, junior, and senior years. A much respected captain in his senior year, he inspired the Gaels to continue their winning ways in the 90’s. His stellar play on the offensive and in particular, the defensive line, earned him All League , First Team honors in his senior season and All-Bergen County Defense Honorable Mention in 1996. As a wrestler Marc was an intimidating foe in the heavyweight category. As a captain of the inaugural teams of 1995 and 1996, our inductee secured District 16 Wrestling second place in 1995 and third place in 1996. His grappling skills also earned him sixth place overall in the Bergen County wrestling tournament in 1996 and a well-deserved spot on the Bergen Record Wrestling Honor Roll. As a baseball player, Marc shined at third base and on the mound. A two-time captain in 1996-and 1997, Marc was voted onto the All-Bergen County team of 1996 and the Herald News All-Area team as a third basemen. His First team selections in the BCSL Olympic Division as a third basemen in 1996 and 1997 earned him the reputation as an outstanding league opponent. Marc batted .384 with 25 hits in 22 games in 1996 and improved to a sizzling .431 average with 9 doubles, 28 runs scored and 20 RBI’s in 1997. As a pitcher in 1997, our inductee soared to a sparkling 8–1 record. In 1997 Marc garnered the National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame Scholar Athlete awards. He also was the recipient of Unico’s National New Jersey Brian Piccolo Memorial Award, and topped off a glittering career with the Bob Blum award at St. Mary for Scholar Athlete of the Year. Upon graduation from St. Mary, Marc attended Fordham University where he lettered for four years in football and earned his degree in Public Accounting. Marc is currently a financial planner with Fidelity Investments, and lives in Rutherford with his wife and two children.

Toni Roselli – 2004 Toni Roselli was a skillful, hardworking performer in soccer, basketball and track during her years at St. Mary. A four year starter in soccer, our inductee was a dominating sweeper who brought intensity and leadership to the playing field in her role as team captain in her junior and senior seasons. In acknowledgment of her stellar play during her senior season, Toni received 2nd team All-League honors. On the hardcourt, Toni was a scrappy, sharp-shooting guard who earned four varsity letters and scored 1,024 career points. During her four year career, she was the indomitable force for four league championship teams that amassed a 71-1 league record. As a junior, our inductee averaged 11.6 points per game, 5.2 rebounds per game, and 4.2 assists per game. In her senior season, Toni averaged 14.6 points per game and 4.5 rebounds per game, while shooting 65% behind the 3 point line. Toni was selected to the 2nd Team All-League team as a sophomore, and received 1st team All-League, 1st team All-Area, and 2nd team All-County honors for her junior season. In recognition of her sterling accomplishments in her senior season, Toni earned 1st team All-League, 1st team All-Area, and 1st team All-County honors. Toni was also invited to play in the prestigious Bergen/Passaic All Star game. In track, our inductee was a talented runner who earned 3 varsity letters while competing in the 400 intermediate hurdles, the 400 and 800 meters, the long jump and jump. After graduation from St, Mary, Toni went on to play four inspired years of basketball at Rutgers Newark where she received a Bachelor’s Degree in Finance. Toni currently works as a financial analyst. DINNER UNDERWRITER

This talented St. Mary athlete was a two sport star in 1949/50, and certainly would have been a three sport star if St. Mary had fielded a baseball team in that era. Jay was a star on the gridiron and a superstar on the hardwood. Our inductee was a four year performer in both football and basketball, earned five letters and served as captain of the basketball team in his senior year. In football Jay was an offensive end and the favorite target of quarterback, Jack Love. He scored the only touchdown in the 6-6 tie against Trenton Catholic and caught three other touchdown passes during the season, some of them in crowded and tight circumstances. But it was in basketball that Jay was the superstar. He was a lanky six foot three one hundred eighty pound domineering center who controlled the boards and was a prolific scorer. Very often during a game he would become a one man show. During the 1950 basketball season in more than 75% of St. Mary games Jay scored more than half of the team points. Our inductee averaged well over 20 points per game that season. He had the ability to score inside and to sink long shots, which made him difficult to defend. Coach Armand Lembo said in the papers that Jay Sheehan was a very talented and coachable ballplayer.

Vincent J. Doffont – 2003

Vincent Doffont was an athlete of surpassing speed, strength, intensity and talent for St. Mary’s in the early 2K era. Vinnie excelled in football as a running back, defensive back and placekicker for the Gaels from the 1999 through 2002 reasons. Our inductee is especially remembered for his versatility, stamina and will to win. During the 2002 football season, Vinnie propelled the Gaels’ to an inspiring 41-39 victory over a tough Hasbrouck Heights squad by rushing for 258 yards, and scoring five touchdowns and five extra points. Vinnie’s superb play in that contest earned him the Madison Square Garden Tri-State Offensive player of the week honors. His totals for the 2002 season were remarkable and awe-inspiring: • 1,168 rushing yards in 119 carries • 9.8 yards per carry • 21 touchdowns • Led Bergen County in sc oring • 5th in the State in scoring. Over the course of his football career at St. Mary’s, our inductee amassed more than 2,000 yards in rushing and set the school record by hitting a 43 yard field goal. Vinnie’s inspiring achievements on the gridiron earned him a cascade of post-season honors, including First Team All-League as a placekicker in his sophomore and junior seasons, Third Team All-County kicker as a junior, and First Team, All-League as a running back, First Team All-North Jersey Parochial as a kick-returner, First Team All-Area as a running back and Al-State Parochial as a running back in his senior season. After St. Mary’s, Vinnie attended Montclair State for four years and graduated in 2007. Vinnie made his mark at MSU as a placekicker, making 37 career field goals including a 52 yarder. Our inductee was also a defensive back in his freshman and sophomore seasons in college. Vinnie won recognition for his kicking talent four times as First Team All-NJAC kicker, two times as First Team All-East Coast kicker, and two times as Division 3, Third Team All-American kicker. Following his career at Montclair State, our inductee moved on to the important business of serving his country. He joined the U.S. Marine Corps, and served four years in an Infantry Battalion as a rifleman. Vinnie was deployed to combat tours once in Iraq and once in Afghanistan, and won the Purple Heart for being wounded in action. Our inductee was also awarded the Unit Citation Award, a Good Conduct Award, the Naval Sea Service and National Defense Ribbon, the Combat Action Ribbon and the U.S. Navy Marine Corps Medal of Honor for his brave service to his country. Our inductee continues his service to the public as a member of the Hudson County Sheriff’s Office Patrol Unit. DINNER UNDERWRITER

ϱ Andrea DeLucrezia – 2005

Andrea DeLucrezia was the brilliant linchpin of our school’s softball team in the early to mid 2K decade. A fierce presence on the mound, she led the Lady Gaels to four league championships, and four appearances in the Bergen County and New Jersey state tournaments. As a sophomore, she propelled the team to the New Jersey State finals. From the circle, Andrea controlled the diamond with a pitching prowess that rivaled many of the great St. Mary pitchers before her, tallying 62 wins, 690 strikeouts, 36 shutouts, 9 no hitters, 16 one hitters, and 2 perfect games. As a young pitcher Andrea immediately established her dominance on the mound. In her sophomore season she compiled a stingy ERA of 0.54 and pitched the team to 17 wins and an appearance in the State finals. During her junior year, she had an ERA of 0.71 and led the team to 22 wins. In her final season as a Gael she had 205 strikeouts and allowed only 26 runs. Andrea’s stellar pitching and dominance on the field earned her multiple post-season accolades. She was named Athlete of the Week, First team All -N orth Jersey twice, First Team All -A rea three times, First Team All -L eague three times, First Team All -B ergen County, Second Team All -B ergen County twice, Second Team All -P arochial, Third Team All -S tate and Third Team All- Non Public. After Andrea graduated from St. Mary, she started a sparkling new softball career as a pitcher at New Jersey City University. Our inductee is the third most winning pitcher in her college’s history and ranks among the top ten pitchers for ERA and top five for most strikeouts and fewest walks. Andrea also tallied the second highest career strikeouts and shutouts, and hurled the fourth most no hitters among NJCU pitchers.

Jimmy Grant – 2005

Jimmy Grant is one of the most celebrated wrestlers in St. Mary’s history. Our inductee was a scientific wrestler and technician with exceptional strength, stamina, mettle and moxie. When he was wrestling, Jimmy always made matters personal by “getting in his opponent’s face”, never “letting his opponent off the hook”, making his opponent “earn every breath on the mat” and forcing his opponent to wish he was somewhere else. While wrestling, Jimmy had a nasty, relentless manner, and earned his reputation as a technical wrestler by “taking opponents down” and then letting them get up so he could take them down again and increase his point total. He never let up on an opposing wrestler, and the motto of Jimmy’s SMH wrestling squad was “we shoot, we score, they shoot, we score.” Our inductee’s wrestling career at St. Mary’s was a model of consistency and improvement. As a freshman, Jimmy received honors on the 1st Team All-League and 2nd Team All-North Jersey, All Groups and was a District Champion. In his sophomore year, Jimmy improved to garnering spots on the 1st Team All-League, 1st Team All-Area and was District Champion again. In his junior season, our Inductee received the 2nd Team All- County and 1st Team All-Area recognition, and emerged as District Champ and Region Champ. Jimmy ascended to new heights in his senior year, capturing well-deserved spots on the 1st Team All-County, 1st Team All-North, Non-Public and 1st Team All-Area, and accolades as the District Champ, Region Champ and Bergen County Champ. During his illustrious St. Mary’s wrestling career our Inductee amassed a record of 110-22, capped off by a senior season record of 31-3. In addition to his sterling wrestling achievements, Jimmy kept in shape by playing baseball as a freshman and running two seasons of varsity cross-country. After St. Mary’s, Jimmy attended Iowa Central Community College where he wrestled for two years. Our inductee then began training in Brazilian ju-jitsu and mixed martial arts, and moved back to New Jersey and trained at the Renzo Gracie Academy in New York City. His professional record is 7-3, and he is scheduled to fight in the “Cage Fighting Fury Championship” at the Borgata Hotel & Casino on January 9, 2016 Jimmy currently is employed by the Bergen County Technical Schools. Jeff Jones is the most prolific running back in St. Mary's history. At 5’11”, 175 pounds with 4.4 speed, Jeff led the state in rushing and scoring in his junior season in 2003 with 2,680 yards and 35 touchdowns, both of which are St. Mary single- season records. Named Athlete of the Week, he was described by the Bergen Record as a “dynamic offensive weapon with incredible vision and speed.” Jeff was named 1st Team All-State All Parochial in the Star Ledger and 1st Team All-North Jersey All- Groups, and 3rd Team All-County in the Record for the 8-2 Gaels. Slowed by a knee injury his senior season, the two-way starter still ran for 1,380 yards, good for 10th all-time in St. Mary history. He scored six times vs Harrison with runs of 72, 40, 7, 40, 8, and a 60 yard interception return. In 2004 the Gaels finished 9-1, and Jeff was named1st Team All-County and 1st Team All-North Jersey, Non-Public in the Record and 1st Team All-Parochial in the Star Ledger. DIANE ‘74 DONNA ‘75 FRANK ‘77 DENISE ‘79 1978 Group 1 Sectio nal State Championship Softball Team

Two years after establishing its Softball program in 1976, a determined group of St. Mary’s athletes engineered one of the most memorable seasons in school history by winning the 1978 Group 1 North State Sectional State Championship. This dazzling rise to the championship was fueled by an astounding team effort under the leadership of head coach Joan Lord and assistant Ken Lord. The Lady Gaels finished the season 15-4 with the #9 ranking in Bergen County. Their powerhouse offense, led by team captains and Hall of Famers Debbie Wojcik and Marie Leone, scored more than 10 runs in each of 9 games, including 20 or more runs three times and over 30 runs once. The pitching staff, led by Hall of Famer Patty Doyle (9-2), achieved wins by four different pitchers, including Hall of Famer Sue Good, Cathy Boland and Theresa Olson. The Lady Gaels’ journey through the sectional finals featured a gritty perseverance and an unyielding will to win as they handily defeated public schools Secaucus 8-3, Palisades Park 9-5 and Wood-Ridge 10-6 to win the sectional title. St. Mary’s was stopped from advancing in the tournament with a loss to Cedar Grove. Numerous individual accolades were gained at the end of season. Outfielder Debbie Wojcik was named 3rd Team All- State All-Groups, 1st Team All-County and South Bergenite Player of the Year. First baseman Marie Leone, third baseman Clare Sullivan and pitcher Patty Doyle were named 1st Team All-League and 1st Team All-South Bergenite. Also named to the All-League and South Bergenite teams were Anne Marie Capodanno, Karyl Reid and Jean Westervelt. Joan Lord was named South Bergenite Coach of the Year. The roster also included outfielders Sherry Zika, Carol Critelli, Denise Muller, Mary DeLuise, Sue Carr, Anne Connolly and Mary Jean Bewighouse and team managers included Debbie Calviello, Eileen Powers, Donna Wojcik and Charlie DeBernardinis. Attorneys at Law PNC Bank Building One Garret Mountain Plaza Woodland Park, NJ 07424 973-881- 1101 SPECIAL RECOGNITION AWARD Single-Season 1,000 Yard Rushers

St. Mary’s first football season was in 1932, but our school had to wait thirty-three years until Charlie Scrivanich emerged in 1955 as its first 1000 yard rusher with 1001 yards. Five years later in 1960, Richie Higgins surpassed that record with 1,117 yards, and in 1967 John Kelly pushed the total to 1,168. In the State Championship season of 1976, Mark Giordano scampered to a new record of 1,326 yards which lasted over 20 years until 1997 when Paul Johnsen ushered in a new era and established a new mark of 1,388. Since 1997 fifteen other SMH rushers have reached the iconic total, and five have for over 1,000 yards twice. The first to do it was Craig Loreti in 1978 and 1979, while Jeff Cruise, who established a new mark in 2001 with 1,400, also ran for over 1,000 yards in 2000. Current record holder Jeff Jones shattered the St. Mary single season record in 2003 with 2,680 yards and tacked on another 1380 yards in 2004. Thereafter, Quadree Hubbard, Jonathan Diaz and Keon Banks each did it in consecutive years in the period from 2009 through 2014. Only one back has rushed for over 1,000 in three consecutive seasons and that was Phil Tyburczy in 1990, 1991, and 1992. A new and 20th member was added this current year, 2015, as senior Darius Stone has joined the club. The full list is below.
