Where information has been derived from other sources, I confirm that this has been acknowledged in the thesis. iii Abstract Ancient Krete perceived itself, and was perceived from outside, as rather different from the rest of Greece, particularly with respect to religion, social structure, and laws. The purpose of the thesis is to explore the bases for these perceptions and their accuracy. Krete’s self-perception is examined in the light of the account of Diodoros Siculus (Book 5, 64-80, allegedly based on Kretan sources), backed up by inscriptions and archaeology, while outside perceptions are derived mainly from other literary sources, including, inter alia, Homer, Strabo, Plato and Aristotle, Herodotos and Polybios; in both cases making reference also to the fragments and testimonia of ancient historians of Krete. While the main cult-epithets of Zeus on Krete – Diktaios, associated with pre-Greek inhabitants of eastern Krete, Idatas, associated with Dorian settlers, and Kretagenes, the symbol of the Hellenistic koinon - are almost unique to the island, those of Apollo are not, but there is good reason to believe that both Delphinios and Pythios originated on Krete, and evidence too that the Eleusinian Mysteries and Orphic and Dionysiac rites had much in common with early Kretan practice. The early institutionalization of pederasty, and the abduction of boys described by Ephoros, are unique to Krete, but the latter is distinct from rites of initiation to manhood, which continued later on Krete than elsewhere, and were associated with different gods. -

This magnificent frame, a work of art in its own right, weighing 297 pounds, exemplifies French style under Louis XV (reigned 1723–1774). Fashioned by an unknown designer, perhaps after designs by Juste-Aurèle Meissonnier (French, 1695–1750), and several specialist craftsmen in Paris about 1740, it was commissioned by Gabriel Bernard de Rieux, a powerful French legal official, to accentuate his exceptionally large pastel portrait and its heavy sheet of protective glass. On this grand scale, the sweeping contours and luxuriously carved ornaments in the corners and at the center of each side achieve the thrilling effect of sculpture. At the top, a spectacular cartouche between festoons of flowers surmounted by a plume of foliage contains attributes symbolizing the fair judgment of the sitter: justice (represented by a scale and a book of laws) and prudence (a snake and a mirror). Still farther away towards the north lies the Mainland of Greece, a region that proved itself to be a very hospitable host to the graft of Minoan culture. Before the close of the LH period the ceramic results of this union were to be spread over the Near East in great profusion and it becomes necessary to define the extent of Aegean influence on those traditions of Near-Eastern art that lie within the scope of our topic. A Great Minoan Triangle: the Changing
SCRIPTA MEDITERRANEA, Vol. VI (1985) A GREAT MINOAN TRIANGLE: THE CHANGING CHARACTER OF PHAISTOS, HAGIA TRIADHA, AND KOMMOS DURING THE MIDDLE MINOAN IB-LATE MINOAN III PERIODS Philip Betancourt Kommos, Hagia Triadha, and Phaistos hold many of the clues to the historical interpretation of the Messara in the second millennium B.C. I have benefited from discussions with numerous persons in the formation of these observations, especially my Italian colleague Vincenzo La Rosa. Phaistos, at the western end of the fertile Messara Plain, is strategically situated to administer the plain's rich agricultural production. Hagia Triadha is on the last hill between Phaistos and the Libyan Sea. Kommos, located to the south, lies at an excellent harbour near a good fresh water spring, with a productive hinterland of small plots and hills. The preeminent position of these three sites in the second millennium may be contrasted with the situation in earlier times. The first known settlement of this part of Crete dates to the Final Neolithic.(1) Phaistos and Kommos were already settled by this period, along with many other small raised hills used as open village sites. The earliest habitation of Hagia Triadha is less well known, but certainly by the Early Bronze Age it was settled as well because its residents were buried in two nearby tholos tombs (Banti 1930-31). Before Middle Minoan IB, we have little archaeological evidence to single out these three sites as among the most important sites of southern Crete. It is possible we are misguided by the clearing and levelling operations of MM I-II that may have destroyed much of the earlier remains, but it is clear that wealth was shared more generally within the Messara in EM and MM than it was in later times. -
Late Bronze Age Kommos
SCRIPTA MEDITERRANEA, Vol. VI (1985) LATE BRONZE AGE KOMMOS: IMPORTED POTTERY AS EVIDENCE FOR FOREIGN CONTACT L. Vance Watrous After nine years of excavation (1), it has become apparent that the site of Kommos on the south coast of Crete was not another Minoan palace centre. Rather, it is a major port site which fed the nearby urban centre at Phaistos. Consequently, the sequence of imports at the site assumes considerable historical interest. The geographical range and number of imported trade items at Kommos is, to my knowledge, unmatched at any Aegean site excavated since World War I. The purpose of this paper is to describe the imported Bronze Age vessels at Kommos, and to suggest some of the broader implications of these finds. For the present my remarks should be regarded as provisional. Kommos is located at a natural harbour site, about an hour's walk from the palatial settlement at Phaistos. Excavation at the site since 1976 has concentrated on three sectors: the settlement on the hilltop and on the hillside, and the monumental complex below to the south. The total number of foreign vessels found in Middle Minoan (MM) contexts at Kommos is, according to Professor P. Betancourt, no more than a dozen. There are two jug fragments, probably from Cyprus, from an MM IB context, a Cypriote White Painted IV juglet from an MM III level, and a Nippled Ewer from Thera or Melos, also from an MM III deposit. The number of imported vases from LM I contexts at Kommos is relatively small. An important exception to this situation is a Late Minoan (LM) IB deposit of vases which fell down into the southern staircase area of Building J in the lower complex. -

Sullivan III Gerald Cadogan ABSTRACT The focus of this dissertation is the analysis of a deposit of Neopalatial (1750- 1490 BC) pottery uncovered within a large cistern (Cistern 2) at the site of Myrtos- Pyrgos, Crete. Excavated by Gerald Cadogan under the aegis of the British School at Athens in the early 1970s on the top of a hill (Pyrgos) near the modern town of Myrtos, Myrtos-Pyrgos is one of the most important and long-lived Bronze Age sites on the southeastern coast of Crete. The study of the Neopalatial pottery from Cistern 2 contributes to two inter- related research fields: pottery studies of Minoan (i.e., Bronze Age) Crete and theories of political reconstructions based on pottery analysis. The presentation of the Neopalatial pottery from Cistern 2 contributes to the knowledge of ceramics and ceramic production in Crete: this dissertation presents in detail the Neopalatial pottery assemblage from Myrtos-Pyrgos, providing stylistic analysis and contextualization within the broader ceramic production of Neopalatial Crete; thus, it also improves the current knowledge of southeastern Crete, an area whose ceramics remain poorly known. -
Modern Minoica As Religious Focus in Contemporary Paganism
The artifice of Daidalos: Modern Minoica as religious focus in contemporary Paganism More than a century after its discovery by Sir Arthur Evans, Minoan Crete continues to be envisioned in the popular mind according to the outdated scholarship of the early twentieth century: as a peace-loving, matriarchal, Goddess-worshipping utopia. This is primarily a consequence of more up-to-date archaeological scholarship, which challenges this model of Minoan religion, not being easily accessible to a non-scholarly audience. This paper examines the use of Minoan religion by two modern Pagan groups: the Goddess Movement and the Minoan Brotherhood, both established in the late twentieth century and still active. As a consequence of their reliance upon early twentieth-century scholarship, each group interprets Minoan religion in an idealistic and romantic manner which, while suiting their religious purposes, is historically inaccurate. Beginning with some background to the Goddess Movement, its idiosyncratic version of history, and the position of Minoan Crete within that timeline, the present study will examine the interpretation of Minoan religion by two early twentieth century scholars, Jane Ellen Harrison and the aforementioned Sir Arthur Evans—both of whom directly influenced popular ideas on the Minoans. Next, a brief look at the use of Minoan religious iconography within Dianic Feminist Witchcraft, founded by Zsuzsanna Budapest, will be followed by closer focus on one of the main advocates of modern Goddess worship, thealogian Carol P. Christ, and on the founder of the Minoan Brotherhood, Eddie Buczynski. The use of Minoan religion by the Goddess Movement and the Minoan Brotherhood will be critiqued in the light of Minoan archaeology, leading to the conclusion that although it provides an empowering model upon which to base their own beliefs and practices, the versions of Minoan religion espoused by the Goddess Movement and the Minoan Brotherhood are historically inaccurate and more modern than ancient. -

CORINTH, 1987: SOUTH OF TEMPLE E AND EAST OF THE THEATER (PLATES 33-44) ARCHAEOLOGICAL INVESTIGATIONS by the American School of Classical Studies at Athens were conductedin 1987 at Ancient Corinth south of Temple E and east of the Theater (Fig. 1). In both areas work was a continuationof the activitiesof 1986.1 AREA OF THE DECUMANUS SOUTH OF TEMPLE E ROMAN LEVELS (Fig. 1; Pls. 33-37:a) The area that now lies excavated south of Temple E is, at a maximum, 25 m. north-south by 13.25 m. east-west. The earliest architecturalfeature exposed in this set of trenches is a paved east-west road, identified in the 1986 excavation report as the Roman decumanus south of Temple E (P1. 33). This year more of that street has been uncovered, with a length of 13.25 m. of paving now cleared, along with a sidewalk on either side. The street is badly damaged in two areas, the result of Late Roman activity conducted in I The Greek Government,especially the Greek ArchaeologicalService, has again in 1987 made it possible for the American School to continue its work at Corinth.
