In depost-kandidaat s periode onderzocht hij de oorzaken van de vergrassing van heide-vegetaties en de daaruit resulterende vegetatie­ patronen (o.l.v. dr J. Berdowski, Vakgroep Plantenoecologie, Rijksuniversiteit Utrecht) en de plantengeografische positie van Sulawesi (Celebes) in de Malei­ sche archipel (o.l.v. dr M.M.J. van Balgooy, Rijksherbarium, Rijksuniversiteit Leiden). Voor het uitvoeren van deze laatste studie verbleef hij een maand in Bogor, Java. Zijn voornaamste interesse gingui t naar detropisch e plantensyste- matiek. Binnen dit onderzoeksveld voerde hij, in samenwerking met R. de Ko­ ning, twee projecten uit, beide aan grassen en begeleid door dr J.F. Veldkamp (Rijksherbarium, Rijksuniversiteit Leiden). De eerste betrof een revisie van de Maleische soorten van het geslacht Paspalum. De tweede omvatte een revisie van de geslachten Heteropholis en Thaumastochloa, inclusief een fylogenetische studie. Ook werd de omgrenzing van de geslachten binnen de groep waartoe dezetwe elaatst ebehore n kritisch herzien. Hij studeerde in 1985cu m laude af. Van september 1985 tot maart 1987voerd e hij een biohistorisch onderzoeks­ project uit aan de 17e eeuwse herbaria van de Leidse apotheker Antoni Gay- mans. Dezeherbari a bevatten planten diedestijd s ind e LeidseHortu s Botanicus aanwezig waren en zij bleken van groot belang bij de reconstructie van de ge­ schiedenis van deze botanische tuin en meer in het bijzonder bij de reconstructie van de oorspronkelijke Clusiustuin. In deperiod e van april 1987to t september 1988ha d bij diverse betrekkingen. Hijvoerd e ondermee ree npilot-studi eui tnaa r demogelijkhede n om informatie­ ve kaarten betreffende de voor- of achteruitgang van vegetaties in Nederland te maken d.m.v. het combineren van verspreidingskaarten van afzonderlijke soorten. Hij verwierf een gedegen kennis van de Noord-West Europese flora en was betrokken bij devertalin g en bewerking van twee gidsen voor de planten van dit gebied. Tevens washi j co-auteur van de Flora van Delft en omstreken. Van september 1988 tot september 1993 was hij aangesteld als OIO bij de stichting NWO (BION). Hij voerde bij de vakgroep Plantentaxonomie van de Landbouwuniversiteit Wageningen een 4-jarig onderzoeks-project uit aan de geografische positie van glaciale regenbos réfugia inAfrika . Dit project omvatte taxonomisch, anatomisch, biogeografisch enfylogenetisc h onderzoek aan Bego­ niasoorten , die alsbioindicatore n kunnen fungeren voor depositi e van de voor­ malige réfugia. Kennis omtrend die positie is tevens van belang voor natuur­ beschermingsdoeleinden. Gedurende dit onderzoek, dat het onderwerp vormde van zijn proefschrift, maakte hij een verzamelreis naar Gabon. In deze periode was hij secretaris van de sectie Plantensystematiek en -geografie van de Ko­ ninklijke Nederlandse Botanische Vereniging. In Wageningen worden, onder leiding van dr J.J.F.E. de Wilde, de conti­ nentaal Afrikaanse begonia's bestudeerd. Continentaal Afrika is met ± 120 soorten, verdeeld over 10secties , armer aan begonia's dan andere continenten. Een studie aan twee van die secties met in totaal 40 soorten is in dit werk vast­ gelegd. Er bestond, naast een grote noodzaak tot opheldering van de status van de afzonderlijke soorten, twijfel over de vraag of de twee secties wel te onder­ scheiden zijn. Enkele andere belangrijke onderzoeksvragen zijn gerelateerd aan de theorie over regenbosrefugia tijdens delaatst e ijstijd. Het taxonomisch niveau dat de rang van sectie of geslacht krijgt toebedeeld isvri j arbitrair gedefinieerd enword t verschillend toegepast in het plantenrijk. Soorten worden indez estudi ebenader d volgenshe t biologisch soortsconcept. Ondersoorten worden gezienal sevolutionair eeenhede n diei nruimt e gescheiden zijn, terwijl variëteiten sympatrisch voorkomen. Eenuitgebreid e morfologische studielig tte ngrondsla g aan hetaf - en omgren- zen van de afzonderlijke soorten. De twee secties worden o.a. gekenmerkt door een kruipend rhizoom, een monochasiale bloeiwijze met sterk gereduceerde bloeiwijzeassen, niet-openspringende vruchten en mannelijke en vrouwelijke bloemen met 2 perianth segmenten die vaak helder geel gekleurd zijn. Belang­ rijke diagnostische kenmerken voor de afzonderlijke soorten zijn te vinden in devor m van het vruchtbeginsel end evor m en beharing van debladeren . Uitslui­ tend op grond van macromorfologische kenmerken kan geen duidelijk onder­ scheid tussen de twee sectiesworde n gemaakt (zieechte r hieronder). Eerdere studiestoonde n een grote verscheidenheid aan bladanatomische ken­ merken binnen Begonia aan. Er werd een bladanatomische studie aan de hier behandelde soorten uitgevoerd. In de eerste plaats om aanvullende kenmerken voor de verwantschapsanalyse (de fylogenetische analyse) te vinden, om daar­ mee een veel bredere en steviger basis te verkrijgen. In de tweede plaats om teonderzoeke n ofe r anatomische verschillen tussen detwe e secties kunnen wor­ den aangewezen. Wieringa). In the year 2000 no issues were produced. Predeces­ sors of the journal were the Agricultural University Wageningen Papers (1984-1988) and the Mededelingen van de Landbouwhoge- school (te) Wageningen (1918-1983). The publication, a series of irregularly published monographs (some­ times reviews or theses) mainly in the English language (with occasional French language issues), is a medium for larger-sized papers of Wageningen University staff members and their collabo­ rators, working in the fields of plant- and animal sciences. Until 1996 the series was funded centrally by the University, but because of financial considerations this policy has been abandoned. Since then, funding has been rather haphazard. The series has always been used as an official exchange medium for the Central Library of the University, which policy has also been abandoned. The exchange list has been reduced, and in the future the WAUP will be offered for exchange with library partners only on the basis of counter- performance. The Editorial Board is looking for ways to continue the publication of WAUP.
