    ALIBABA: Credibility Crisis- SPRING 2015 © Leite T, Martin C, Montes C, Reyes S ALIBABA: CREDIBILITY CRISIS SYNOPSIS: For the past eight years, Alibaba has supported business growth throughout China and has begun to expand beyond China’s border aiming to become a leader in international markets. However, this path has not been easy. This case summarizes the challenges Alibaba Group has faced over the recent past, including global expansion, up-and-coming rivals, going public, and an emphasis on the accusations of counterfeiting. Alibaba’s reactions to its challenges are discussed along with the company’s outlook for the future. THEMES: Ecommerce, product strategy, competition, global expansion, positioning, ethics, intellectual property, governmental regulation, corporate reputation THE HISTORY OF ALIBABA In 1999, Jack Ma founded Alibaba Group. At the time, the company consisted of eighteen people. From its inception, Alibaba Group believed “the Internet would level the playing field by enabling small enterprises to leverage innovation and technology to grow and compete more effectively in the domestic and global economies.” With this conviction behind everything they do, Alibaba Group has become a global leader in mobile and online ecommerce. It all started with what is currently known as 1688.com. This website helped small Chinese manufacturers, exporters and entrepreneurs sell goods internationally. Now, Alibaba Group and its subsidiaries operate prominent wholesale and retail online marketplaces as well as a variety of internet- based services including advertising and marketing services, electronic payment, cloud-based computing, and mobile solutions to name a few.     Film, Television and Video productions featuring brass bands Gavin Holman, October 2019 Over the years the brass bands in the UK, and elsewhere, have appeared numerous times on screen, whether in feature films or on television programmes. In most cases they are small appearances fulfilling the role of a “local” band in the background or supporting a musical event in the plot of the drama. At other times band have a more central role in the production, featuring in a documentary or being a major part of the activity (e.g. Brassed Off, or the few situation comedies with bands as their main topic). Bands have been used to provide music in various long-running television programmes, an example is the 40 or more appearances of Chalk Farm Salvation Army Band on the Christmas Blue Peter shows on BBC1. Bands have taken part in game shows, provided the backdrop for and focus of various commercial advertisements, played bands of the past in historical dramas, and more. This listing of 450 entries is a second attempt to document these appearances on the large and small screen – an original list had been part of the original Brass Band Bibliography in the IBEW, but was dropped in the early 2000s. Some overseas bands are included. Where the details of the broadcast can be determined (or remembered) these have been listed, but in some cases all that is known is that a particular band appeared on a certain show at some point in time - a little vague to say the least, but I hope that we can add detail in future as more information comes to light.

Markets are mechanisms for allocating resources to uses, not for achieving just or fair outcomes. They often promote the well being of some while harming others. Markets have historically coexisted with nation states and transnational regulatory systems which were needed not just to bring about fairer and more sustainable distributions than those arrived at through private ordering, but to create the very conditions under which markets themselves could operate. Beyond textbooks and formal models, markets are not naturally self-adjusting. The legal system, an arm of the state, is needed to secure property and enforce contracts, to protect private exchange from collusion, and to create the conditions for productive organizations to survive and prosper. This question has become a big source of embarassment for Andrea Leadsom, who is competing with Theresa May to lead the Conservative Party and become the United Kingdom's Prime Minister after David Cameron steps down. At issue is a newspaper interview with the London Times, in which she suggested that being a mother made her more qualified than the childless May. "I feel being a mum means you have a very real stake in the future of our country, a tangible stake," she is quoted as saying. When the article was published, she was incensed, saying in a tweet: Truly appalling and the exact opposite of what I said. Un personaggio intrigante il primo, sempre pronto a tuffarsi nelle imprese più incredibili e avventurose, sprezzante del pericolo e delle diffi- coltà.
