About us: Hampshire Archives and Local Studies & Wessex Film and Sound Archive Hampshire Record Office is home to Hampshire Archives and Local Studies and Wessex film and Sound Archive. At our Winchester site we have 8 miles of shelves containing archives relating to Hampshire and Hampshire families, and film and sound archives relating to central southern England. Wessex Film and Sound Archive contains 38,000 items of film and sound relating to the region, from early advertisements to amateur film footage. Our oldest material dates from the earliest years of cinema (1898) and our collections chart the progression of the art form in the region from cinema of attractions to modern day filmmaking. Film is a fantastic source for use in schools and offers many opportunities for learning that can enliven many topics. ‘The box is very useful in terms of exciting the students’ imagination. ‘The teachers’ notes were fab as I could read through as the film played.’ About our resource boxes Our boxes are designed to offer a range of primary source material to allow a class to conduct its own project over a number of weeks, with archive film at the centre of the journey. We loan out boxes for a half term at a time, to allow the materials to be used as fully as possible during the course of the project. We currently have 2 boxes on offer; each uses a different film as its focus. ‘The students really enjoyed all aspects of the day. They felt as if they were treated in a grown up manner.’ Resource Box: The Adventures of the Girl Pat On 1st April 1936 a small fishing boat went missing from Grimsby, after a planned fishing trip in the North Sea. The crew were feared lost at sea, but no sign of the wreck could be found. The boat was then seen at Dover, then Jersey and then Corcubion, Spain, but just as soon as she was sighted, she disappeared again! The nation was rapt and now convinced that the skipper was stealing the boat! Sightings abounded in increasingly exotic locations, with the national and local press keeping everyone at home on tenterhooks. Where was this boat heading? Commentators couldn’t decide, but keenly guessed at the exotic and daring motives of the crew…treasure hunting, gun running, pearl fishing! The crew were eventually arrested in Georgetown, Guiana, some 8,000 miles from where they started. The public interest was such that an article was put out to recruit a crew to bring the Girl Pat home and a number of Hampshire residents were recruited to the task. The Girl Pat finally docked in Portsmouth’s Camber dock on 10th May 1937 and it is this moment that our film depicts. ‘The Adventures of the Girl Pat’ is a fantastic opportunity for pupils to learn about a real life sea faring adventure through resources provided by WFSA. Our box is a comprehensive resource pack containing over 50 primary sources for students to analyse, as well as clips of the film (on USB and DVD), links to other online resources and suggestions for tasks/projects. The pack also contains an atlas similar to the one used in the voyage, a reproduction compass, film can and autobiography of the skipper. Fred produced a number of reels of film – the film stock itself was very expensive, but what he chose to film gives us a lasting record of a number of historic events as well as an insight into the goings on at a busy Thirties hotel. Topics featured: • The Paris Exposition of 1937 • Family life in 1930s/Southampton between the wars • The arrival of the Habana (refugee children from Spain –Spanish Civil War) • Coronation of George VI This is a great opportunity for a local history project at KS2 or KS3, and could fit within the following curriculum areas: KS2: (hi2.2.1 Local History) or (hi2.2.2 Extended Chronological study); KS3: History: Challenges for Britain, Europe and the wider world 1901 to the present day, World history.
