I ----——-- -I
The organ, built by Lawrence Phelps and Associates, was dedicated during worship on September 25, 1977. There were 3 dedicatory recitals given that fall: William Ness on Sunday, September 25, 1977, Gerhard Krapf on Sunday, October 9, 1977, and Gillian Weir on Sunday, November 20, 1977. After a recent restoration project was completed in 2016, the organ was rededicated on December 6, providing a strong foundation for worship with a rich and vibrant new quality.
When the organ was built in 1977, it was state of the art. However, mechanical defects due to settling of the instrument, broken stops and normal wear and tear had taken their toll. Thanks to the work that has been done, the original intent of the organ’s design and sound has been restored. But in addition, tonal work has been done to “round out and enhance” the capabilities of the sounds this organ produces. Much has changed in our technological world that affects how we hear an organ’s sound. The process known as “remanufacturing” makes productive and efficient use of the best of the old while building on the new.
All25 stops are in working order once again, and the organ’s mixtures have been restored not just to its original design, but above and beyond it. Pipes have been straightened and polished in the facade and much work has been done to repair and restore pipes housed further back in the instrument and not visible to the eye, but, certainly audible to the ear!! The case has also been repaired, removing the large structural crack along the front, further enhancing the impressive architectural statement the instrument makes on the eye and ear. 45

Klais Orgelbau Op. 1929 was designed to be an educational organ. The façade on first glance seems to be a steel curtain of pipes, but upon closer inspection, it subtly reveals the inner layout of the 4 organ. A spiral staircase (rather than the typical ladder) allows -;= visitor access to the pipe chambers, so those unfamiliar with the organ can better understand how it works. The console has three different historical modes, so students can experience the instrument as organs were played in 1850, in 1900, as well as in the present day. it was designed to educate, edify, and entertain Iowans for fat least) the next 200 years. The organ was modeled after Central German instruments by Friedrich Ladegast (1818-1 905), particularly the organ at Schwerin Cathedral. These instruments combine the traditional construction of baroque organs with a generous supply of Romantic tone colors, making them ideal vehicles for several hundred years worth of organ literature. Craig Cramer, Professor of Organ at the University of Notre Dame, acted as external consultant for the entire project.
The instrument replaces the organ formerly housed in Clapp Hall, built by Casavant Fréres Ltée (Op. 3105) in 1971, which was directed by FEMAto be replaced during the 2008 flood recovery. The Casavant was salvaged and willbe installed later this year in the new sanctuary of St. Andrew Presbyterian Church in Iowa City by Dobson Pipe Organ Builders of Lake City, Iowa. The organ was officiallyinaugurated on February 10, 2017. British concert organist Kevin Bowyer performed Kaikoshru Sorabji’s Second Symphony. The piece, written in 1929-32, is considered to be one of the technically most demanding and surely one of the longest organ compositions ever made.

Monday MUSE for Children: Sing to Learn of Peace, Psalms, Penguins, & Phrygian Mode with Pamela Ruiter-Feenstra Ifyou have a children’s choir, teach piano lessons and want to energize your music theory tutoring (for adults, too), or sing with children in and out of school, this workshop is for you! From years of observing how children muse about the world and how to care for all God’s creatures, Dr. Pamela Ruiter-Feenstra offers a fresh approach to teaching children Psalms and blessings, music theory, academic subjects, peace and world culture through a cappella songs and activities. Muse at Work songs teach children how to read and listen to music, engaging music theory through musicianship. Learn how “Crazy Giraffes” teach key signatures and why “Phrygian is a Mysterious Mode!” Muse for the Soul provides church musicians with Psalms, Bible stories, and liturgical seasons set as songs and theater for children. Try out “Psalm for Children,” “Pentecost Baptism,” and “What Time Is It in the Church Year?” Muse at School features songs such as “Over the Clouds and Under the Sea, Prepositions Are for Me,” “Mr.Duck’s Valentine,” and “Rocks Rock” to teach academic subjects. Through Muse in Peace songs, children learn about world peacemakers Wangari Maathai, MLKJr., Mahatma Gandhi, the Dalai Lama, and Mother Teresa, and children become empowered to activate their voices, and embody the change needed for peace within and throughout the world.
