Find this book (affiliate link): In Indian writer Mulk Raj Anand’s novel The Big Heart (1945), student leader Satyapal listens to Azad Hind Radio during the Second World War. These broadcasts by political radical Subhas Chandra Bose were trying to influence Indian ‘hearts and minds’ against British imperialism by using German radio services from 1942 onwards. On the other hand, the poet Purun Singh Bhagat, another character in the same novel, declares that the English are ‘on the side of truth against falsehood’ (1). Yet, curiously, neither Bhagat nor any others in the novel are depicted as listening to the BBC. -

Kervan – International Journal of Afro-Asiatic Studies n. 19 (2015) Dalit Literature and Aesthetics Ajay Navaria In conversation with Alessandra Consolaro, Dr. Ajay Navaria, who was in Torino as Visiting Researcher during October and November 2015, discusses Dalit literature and its aesthetics. Dr. Ajay Navaria, could you clarify the definition of the word ‘dalit’ and its different meanings? It’s not clear when and who and where the word ‘dalit’ was used for the first time. Late Gandhi ji called this community ‘Harijans’ – meaning People of God – but Doctor Ambedkar was against this word. He asked Gandhi ji “what else are the caste Hindus, if they themselves, like all of us, aren’t people of God”. Dr Ambedkar in his writings always used “depressed classes”, the word for this class of people or untouchables or depressed classes. In 1970, the word ‘dalit’ emerged in the Indian State of Maharastra, simultaneously with the movement of the Dalit panthers – a movement modeled to the US Black panther movement; Baburao Bagul, Nam Dev Dasal, Raja Dhale were the pioneers of this movement. This form of Dalit activism triggered/motivated the dalit literary moment we know today, as well its literature in Marathi language. So we can say that the word ‘dalit’ was used initially in Maharashtra. And from there it gradually migrated to the Hindi-belt of North-India in 1990. The word ‘dalit’ in Sanskrit means ‘broken’ or ‘scattered’. In Hindi dictionaries, the word ‘dalit’ means crushed, exploited, tortured and broken. As I said, the beginning of the Dalit movement has been considered from Dr Ambedkar. -

Soundhararajan Ph.D-Research Scholar Assistant Professor Department of English Department of English Annamalai University Annamalai University Abstract The present Research is a modest attempt to analyze and evaluate the theme of exploitation in Untouchable and Coolie. In these novels. Mulk Raj Anand tries his best to free the working class from the inequities and inequalities, in a caste- ridden society. He presents the social, political, and economic problems which India faces today. Mulk Raj Anand against superstition, feudalism and imperialism. he has committed himself to the welfare of the down-trodden. Moreover, he insists that all people must have education, economic equality which enable man to ameliorate from the clutches of poverty, violence, greed, jealousy, suppression and narrow mindedness. The Novel analyses Anand’s portrayal of the suffering of the untouchables and their exploitation by the caste-hindus with special reference to Untouchable, the first novel of Mulk Raj Anand. Bakha, the protagonist of the novel, portrayed as scavenger, suffers insults at the hands of the high cast Hindus in the cast-ridden Hindu society. In spite of insults, Bakha remains optimistic and his optimism is highly portrayed by Anand. The centers on an analysis of Anand’s second novel Coolie. In which Munoo, the protagonist, experiences sufferings and undergoes onslaught at the hands of the haves. Anand tries to project a social reality of the time past, present and future as well. Ruthless treatment and merciless exploitation of the poor at the hands of self- complacent British planters. -

At the very outset, we raise our hearts in gratitude to the omnipotent spirit who is the beginning and end of all endeavours without whose blessings we can do nothing. Respected Chief guests of the day, other dignitaries on the dies and off the dies, my colleagues, my dear students. With all your permission, let me present before you the 45th annual report of MES Asmabi College for the academic year 2013 – 14. As I look back, this academic year has brought many accomplishments and also made us see the gaps in some areas where there is a definite scope for improvement. The new College Management Committee was formed on 21st May 2013 with Adv P K M Habeeb as the President, Mr K M Abdul Salam as the Secretary and Correspondent and Mr P H Ziyaudheen Ahamed as the Treasurer. The current strength of students is 1171 out of which 849 are girls. We have twelve undergraduate programmes; four post graduate programmes, one research programme and three career oriented courses. Our staff includes 18 Associate professors, 27 Assistant professors, 20 guest faculties and 17 Non teaching staff. General Activities of College The college celebrated World Environment Day on 5th June 2014 Conducted a NAAC sponsored National Conference on Role of Information & Communication Technology in Institutional Quality Enhancement-Analyzing Current Status and Exploring New Frontiers on 17th and 18th June 2014, organized by IQAC The University Grant Commission and Dept Of Hindi, MES Asmabi College jointly organized a National Workshop on ICT for Teaching and Learning Hindi Language& Literature, on 19th &20th June 2014. -

This process can be understood as cultural representation in literature. Interpretation and depiction of cultural aspects in literature is undoubtedly a part of this principle.The post-independenceMalayalam literature witnessed a remarkable shift to modernism with the contribution of writers like M.T Vasudevan Nair, O.V Vijayan, Kakkanadan, M. Mukundan, Anand, VaikomMuhammedBasheer, Sethu and PunathilKunhabdullah among many other eminent authors. The researcherhas selected the magnum opus fiction KhasakinteIthihasam (self-translated as The Legends of Khasak) written by O.V Vijayan to analyze the aspect of cultural representation in the post-independence Malayalam literature. Key Words: Colonialism, Post-colonial literature, Cultural representation, Modernism. Post-independence Malayalam literature became more realistic with the advent of modernism. But since Kerala culture is built through the legends of 'vadakkanpattukal' (ballads of the north), 'thekkanpattukal' (ballads of the south), 'pulluvarpattukal' (traditional songs of pulluvar community), 'Mappilapattukal' (traditional songs by the Islamic community) and such other 'pattu' school of poetry and the vast array of myths and legends that form the crux of Dravidian and Aryan ancestry, there could never be a total deviation. Colonialism left its deep imprint upon almost all wakes of Kerala history and literature was no exception. -

Modernism, Postmodernism, Creativity, and Colonialism in Malayalam Literature
MODERNISM, POSTMODERNISM, CREATIVITY, AND COLONIALISM IN MALAYALAM LITERATURE M.G.S. Narayanan It has become fashionable among critics to indulge in the fireworks of modernist and post-modernist Jargon, obviously in a bid to perplex tile poor reader. The modernist and the post-modernist in the West invented then- new phraseology to convey something different from their existing tradition, some new experience related to social change in the twentieth century, following the two World Wars which shattered all values and banished all finer sentiments from life. They were the victims of then’ own enlightenment faith in progress, equality and peace. Then’ predicament was unenviable. This agony gave birth to cynicism about human nature and the future of civilization. Bookish Indian scholars who never went through the hell and horror of such European war-experience, but blindly aped their counterparts in the West, cut sorry figures in their comic roles as critics. Tile pretentious and hollow preaching shows the distance between them and the realities of life among the people. The artist, the poet, the fiction writer has to be an organic part of life in the society in which lie lives and moves, breaths and thinks, and shared the passion of human existence. Living in an ivory tower, or pretending to live there, is an act of snobbery in a fools’ paradise, - no, in a fools’ inferno, if there is one. In Kerala, fortunately for us, we had a bunch of writers who were steeped in tile passions, witch moved the people - poverty, betrayal in love, inequality, dishonesty, perversion, ambition, disillusionment and frustration. -
