Throw together a night of performances by international dancers, sprinkle in some teenage competition winners’ solos, and call it something cute: That would seem to be the recipe for Youth America Grand Prix’s “Stars of Today Meet the Stars of Tomorrow” gala, happening this Thursday and Friday at the Brooklyn Academy of Music. Except, the name of this annual program is eerily prescient. When you look back at the lists of YAGP medalists from the past 15 years, that “Stars of Tomorrow” moniker is spot-on. They read like something of a Who’s Who of ballet—including several top names who’ve been highlighted in Dance Magazine. Back in 2002, Sarah Lane nabbed the senior bronze medal with an unforgettable performance: After her music stopped 20 seconds into her Paquita variation, she finished the rest in silence. In the audience (which erupted into a spontaneous standing ovation) was American Ballet Theatre artistic director Kevin McKenzie. We ended up putting Lane onDance Magazine‘s cover in June 2007 just before he promoted her to soloist. Jim Nowakowski won the Youth Grand Prix in 2002 before joining Houston Ballet, then took a star turn on “So You Think You Can Dance.” We named him one of Dance Magazine‘s “25 to Watch” this year. That same year, Brooklyn Mack placed third in the classical dance category for senior men. The renowned Swiss choreographer and ballet director has recently led the multi-award-winning Ballett am Rhein Düsseldorf Duisburg to international acclaim. His works fascinate with their intensity, their virtuosity, their deeply moving images and a concise language of movement, which is understood as making music with the body, but always reflects the atmosphere and questions of today’s world. Several performances offer the opportunity to encounter Martin Schläpfer’s art – including two world premieres: Two new pieces for Vienna are being created to Gustav Mahler’s 4th Symphony and Dmitri Shostakovich’s 15th Symphony, which also mark the beginning of the intensive creative dialogue that Martin Schläpfer will be establishing with the artists of his ensemble in the coming years. Ein übersichtlich möbliertes Zimmer mit Bad, Topfpflanzen, das Sofa ist zu einem sloppy Bett aufgeklappt. Sein Zuhause in London-Soho, das er zur Untermiete bewohnt. Andere sitzen im Pub. Sergei Polunin befüllt an einem Freitagabend noch eine Waschtrommel mit Frottee und Socken. Während des Wartens kriegt man viel mit vom ewigen Ein- und Auscheckprozess seines Alltags. Morgen geht’s wieder weiter, nach Belgrad diesmal. Telefonate. Auf der Küchentheke liegt zwischen Reiswaffeln und Wasserflaschen praktisch immer alles parat: Einwegrasierer, Ladestecker, „Costa Azzurra“, der Unisex-Duft von Tom Ford, Tabletten und Wundsalben. Der Tänzer gilt in der Ballettwelt als meisterhaft - und durchgeknallt. Aus seiner Verehrung für Wladimir Putin macht der Ukrainer, der inzwischen auch russischer Staatsbürger ist, kein Geheimnis. Er ließ sich den russischen Präsidenten, der als Kopf hinter dem Krieg in seiner Heimat gilt und Massenmörder Assad stützt, auf die Brust tätowieren. Sein Social-Media-Auftritt verstörte. Sein Bad- Boy-Image pflegte er mit Hingabe. Männer würden verweichlichen und gehörten geschlagen, postete der 29-Jährige auf Instagram und erntete einen gewaltigen Shitstorm. „Ich war zerstörerisch eine Weile, auch mit meiner Karriere“, sagt Polunin jetzt. What you can see of Polunin, the Royal Ballet's youngest principal dancer, is mightily impressive. Long-limbed, with a radiant openness about his upper body, a spacious musicality and an apparently weightless, stratospheric jump, at only 21 he's a persuasive candidate to be British ballet's biggest hope. One bedazzled critic, reviewing him in Rhapsody earlier this year, even declared him "better than Baryshnikov" – praise indeed. This season is packed with vital landmarks and debuts for him: tonight, he makes his debut in Manon as Des Grieux, the luxury-seeking heroine's unfortunate lover. Soon there's his first Romeo in Kenneth MacMillan's Romeo and Juliet and an international cinecast of The Sleeping Beauty in which he is the Prince. Polunin looks like a young man in a hurry, but in fact he is lucky to be alive. Aged eight, he contracted pneumonia; one of his lungs stopped working and the local hospital sent him home still ill after six weeks.
