Fenelon Township Chronicle October 2013

Principal’s Message: We have had a wonderful start to our year, here at FTPS. The staff and students are engaged and involved in pursuing academic success and good citizenship. Some highlights of our awesome month are noted below and I know you will help us celebrate our success as you read the rest of the newsletter. Please see the practical parent engagement tips attached, as it takes both home and school to ensure success. In addition, we have some upcoming events for October so please read on. Please check us out on our website. We often share “Smilebox “photos of the events going on in our school. You might even find a picture of you!

Meet the Teacher Our Meet the Teacher night was excellent. Lots of games, laughs and community spirit were evident. It was great to see so many families come out to the school. We were thrilled with the attendance. Thank you for your commitment to both your children and our school.

On Track to Excellence TRACK Our students are working on getting and staying on TRACK this school year. TRACK is an acronym that we are using in our building to represent key ideas and goals we have set for our school. Trust Respect Appreciation Community Kindness The staff and I would like to encourage parents to use this language at home with their children. We are already off to a good start with developing and supporting our community spirit

FTPS Staff 2013-2014 As many of you know, Ms. Dunn is leaving FTPS to begin her maternity leave on Friday, October 4th. She has been doing a wonderful job of Lead Special Education Teacher (SERT) and we will miss her. We will keep you posted when our new little “tiger” arrives. Mlle Byer will be assuming the role of Lead SERT as well as teaching French. We have hired Roger Reynolds to replace some of Mlle Byer‟s work and some of Ms. Dunn‟s work. Mr. Reynolds will be responsible for primary special education and Mlle Byer will be responsible for the junior and intermediate students.

Drum Fit Our new Drum Fit program has been a great success so far this year! Students are loving the chance to get their heart rates up, release stress, get creative, and most of all have fun! S. Byer

Fire Safety in Grade One On Friday, September 27, the Grade One class received a special visitor from the CKL Fire Department to speak about Fire Prevention and Safety. The classroom discussion covered such topics as: smoke alarms in the home, the importance of testing alarms, identifying firefighters as someone who is there to help, the importance of a Home Escape Plan, calling 911 and Stop, Drop, Roll. Following the discussion students toured the fire truck in the parking lot. P. Barrow

Lindsay Exhibition For another year, students from F.T.P.S. submitted some terrific entries in the grade-specific classes for 2013's LEX. There were various winners and some unique creativity was displayed by many of these avid participants. The Grade 2/3 and Grade 2 classes thoroughly enjoyed the Agricultural Guided tours last Thursday. Thank you to the many parent volunteers who assisted us with the excursion as well as to the many parents who took their child's entries to be judged. Without your support, we would never had such great success. Thanks to Chris Armstrong who created our fair display representing FTPS. E. Mocha

Nut Safe School Under the TLDSB Anaphylaxis Policy OP-6501 and Procedure OP-6510, the Board commits to providing a safe environment for individuals with life-threatening allergies. While we recognize that it is not possible to guarantee a nut-free environment or reduce risk completely to zero, careful planning and communication can assist in creating an allergen-safe environment where students, staff and community members with allergies feel safe and supported. For schools that have designated space as nut-safe, the following applies: We have had a number of queries in our schools about the use of imitation peanut/ nut spreads which are soy- based and have the consistency and visual appearance of peanut butter.

Please note the following regarding the use of these imitation peanut / nut spreads in schools:  TLDSB does NOT support the use of imitation peanut / nut spreads as an alternative to peanut butter or other nut-spreads in TLDSB schools;  Staff are often not able to easily identify or visually distinguish whether the spread a student has in their lunch is a real nut butter or an imitation, due to the similar colour and consistency it has to peanut butter;  In order to most effectively reduce the element of risk to students with allergies, and to continue to try to create an allergen-safe environment, we are asking that schools do not promote the use of imitation peanut/nut spreads and request that students who are bringing imitation spreads to school choose different lunch alternatives.

Because he had bone cancer. for the terry fox run I’m running for ken Worsly because he had stomach cancer. He didn’t need a proSTHETIC leg like terry. I also have a great papa and he died of jaw cancer. But I still here lots of story’s about them. I would have loved to meet them but unfortunately I didn’t meet them. Oh and my grandma had lung cancer but she survived and my aunt Bonnie had thyroid cancer and she survived and im so glad because we don’t need any more people dying of cancer its just bad news so hopefully now one else dies of cancer. On terry’s run he meet a kid named Greg and he had a prosthetic leg like terry but he was only ten now that is sad right ya I now. After he went swimming with Greg even though the had to take of the leg that didn’t stop them from swimming. Can you believe that terry only took 4 days of of 150 days 4 only 4. Terry ran so far its so sad that he died but its good that we all remember about terry because he did something amazing I don’t think any one else could do that with a prosthetic leg he got 12 0000 he got 1$ for every candieon isn’t that crazy it must have taken allot of hard work to do that with a prosthetic leg WOW on the way in thunderbay he said that his lung were hurting and went to the hospiatal he died in July 1981.
