4 ARIZONA THOROUGHBRED | Jan/Feb/March ATBA Presidents Letter

Dear Fellow ATBA Members,

Being re-elected as your President is a great honor for me and I hope to meet and exceed all of your expectations, while serving in this capacity. This year the breeding and racing industry in our state will once again face more challenges. Yet each of them presents opportunity, which hopefully will allow us to move into a positive direction.

Our 46th annual October Sale is behind us and I would like to extend a special thank you to all who participat- ed. Although, the number of consigned horses were down slightly from 2012, our sale was successful due to the quality of horses sold.

Our sale topper was a chestnut colt by Distorted Reality and was purchased by Charles Garvey for $28,000. According to the Jockey Club reports of last year, there were some concerns with the decline of mares bred and the number of foals on the market. The quality of yearlings sold made for higher auction prices and the market appears to be improving.

A further note of interest is Senate Bill 1282, for Advanced Deposit Wagering, which contains two provisions that would fund the Arizona Breeders Awards. Currently, this bill is moving through the legislative process and I will update our members on any new developments.

It is my highest priority to work toward increased unity, within this organization and among all industry stake- holders, so we as the horse industry in Arizona speak with one voice when addressing legislative and public relations issues. I urge you to support me in this effort by bringing your experiences and suggestions to my attention. We live in a large state which sometimes makes it hard to meet in person, but you will always find an open line of communication by sending me an e-mail to [email protected]. I look forward to hearing from you.

Meanwhile, preparations for the Spring Breeders’ Festival are already in full swing. Please mark your calendar and plan to attend our Annual Membership Meeting and Awards Dinner on Friday, April 25, 2014, followed by an exciting day of racing on Saturday, April 26, 2014. During the Membership Meeting and Awards Dinner you will also have the opportunity to meet in person the entire Board of Directors.

We all look forward to seeing you there! With best wishes for a successful foaling, breeding and racing season.

Sincerely

Kevin Owens, President [email protected]

A cool overcast sky was putting a damper on the program scheduled with four stakes races to run. There were rumbling rumors in the barn area, as to whether or not more rain could cancel the races. Soon the sun was shining and the November Breeders’ race day began.

The Cactus Flower Stakes went to post with seven fillies and mares in the field. The wet track didn’t seem to dampen the spirit of Got An Itch. She broke from the gate with jockey Geovanni Franco and sat just off the speed, nearing the inside turn. The dark/bay brown mare took aim and advanced four wide running for the wire. As she reached the front in the home stretch, she edged clear in a driving finish.

Cheering was heard throughout the clubhouse as Got An Itch crossed the finish line paying $30.40 to win, $7.60 to place and $14.20 to show. The winning connections were owner Jan Osborn and trainer Molly Pearson. It was an exciting race to watch and what a payoff for racing fans! Congratulations to all! Introduction by Michael Napier

t is the consensus that one has to be brave to make a living as a Jockey. It’s also the consensus that men and women can be equallyI brave.

However, it is not until the 1960’s when women began to participate in the jockey profession, riding the same Thoroughbreds as their male counterparts. The real trailblazer in expanding the female gender base for the jockey profession was Diane Crump who, in 1970, became the first woman to ride in the Kentucky Derby.

Since then, there have been only 6 female jockeys to participate in the Kentucky Der- by, and only one, Julie Krone, who has won a United States Triple Crown race, in the 1993 aboard Colonial Af- fair. Krone was also the only woman with a Breeder’s Cup win, until Rosie Napravnik won the Juvenile aboard Shanghai Bobby.

To this day, no woman jockey has won the Kentucky Derby. The question is not whether that will happen, but rather, when it will happen.

In-roads by females in the male-dominat- ed sport have not been easy. Even today, there are only several dozen female jock- eys, compared to several hundred male jockeys.

“Long before, Jockey Chantal Sutherland, modeled on top of a Thoroughbred for Vogue Magazine, there was Merrilee Murphy-Warner”

ot only was Merrilee beautiful, she was very well educated. As a young girl, she attended a catholic high school, then later in life went to college to become a Nteacher. She taught English & Bible literature for many years and could speak Spanish fluently. Merrilee had a modeling career and was photographed riding horses in many western magazine’s, as well as other various publications.

Merrilee Murphy-Warner, started riding race horses in the 1940’s. She was about 11 years-old. Her father, Floyd Murphy was a horse trainer and engaged her to ride all of their horses at the bush tracks of Oklahoma and Colorado. The unrecognized race meets com- monly held at county fairgrounds, would offer horse racing events, rodeo relays and roman style riding competitions. Merrilee, would ride competi- tively in all three events.

At the Durango, Colorado fairgrounds she would compete along side seasoned female jockey’s such as, Lucille French, Donna Woods and Betty Smith in “ladies only” events called the Powder Puff Derby’s. There were many summer racing meets, where these women competed against one another. They would often finish in the money more times than the male jockeys.

In an interview with her daughter Jacque Guerra (horse trainer), she said her mother was fearless, hard working, and had a com- petitive spirit. Merrilee was involved with horses her entire life, and her daughter Jacque carries on the family horse racing legacy.

Lucille French, Donna Woods, Pinkie Smith and Merrilee Warner, were of the elite and talented women, who helped pioneer the way for female jockeys and horse women today. When an amazing talent is discovered on the televised American Idol shows, a coined phrase is some- times used..... “She had the Whole Package”

Merrilee Murphy-Warner certainly had it all. Beauty, brains, bravery, and riding talent, but above all she had heart.

ammi Piermarini, is a veteran rider and began her career as a jockey at Suffolks Down in Massachusetts. She holds the record for third- leadingT female jockey of all-time, surpassing Patti Cooksey and Vicky Baze’s record in 2012 with 2,139 wins.

In an interview with Tammi, she said, her family and perseverance is what keeps her going. Tammi is married and is the mother of three children, Izabella, (daughter) Johnny Vincent (son) and “Princess” Sophia-Lawren, (daughter). Working hard is what every jockey has to do to make it in this business. I’ve had set backs with injuries, but I keep riding to support my family and to be as successful as I can. “My family are my biggest fans and my toughest critics”

My family is very supportive of my career. My husband John, works as my Agent at Suffolks Downs and is a great help with the kids. He gets them off to school in the morning and brings them to the races to

watch me ride in the afternoons.

Being a jockey may seem dangerous to the average person, but it’s second nature to Tammi Piermarini. It’s the way she’s made a living, most of her life.

Among other accomplishment’s from riding at the east Boston oval, she has acquired five leading rider titles. The New England Turf Writers Association has honored her three- times with the Eli Chait Memorial Award for Outstanding Jockey. Tammi is enjoying the warm climate here in the Southwest, as she continues her riding career at Turf Paradise.
