This year the breeding and racing industry in our state will once again face more challenges. Yet each of them presents opportunity, which hopefully will allow us to move into a positive direction. Our 46th annual October Sale is behind us and I would like to extend a special thank you to all who participat- ed. Although, the number of consigned horses were down slightly from 2012, our sale was successful due to the quality of horses sold. Our sale topper was a chestnut colt by Distorted Reality and was purchased by Charles Garvey for $28,000. According to the Jockey Club reports of last year, there were some concerns with the decline of mares bred and the number of foals on the market. The quality of yearlings sold made for higher auction prices and the market appears to be improving. A further note of interest is Senate Bill 1282, for Advanced Deposit Wagering, which contains two provisions that would fund the Arizona Breeders Awards. Currently, this bill is moving through the legislative process and I will update our members on any new developments. It is my highest priority to work toward increased unity, within this organization and among all industry stake- holders, so we as the horse industry in Arizona speak with one voice when addressing legislative and public relations issues. I urge you to support me in this effort by bringing your experiences and suggestions to my attention. We live in a large state which sometimes makes it hard to meet in person, but you will always find an open line of communication by sending me an e-mail to [email protected]. I look forward to hearing from you. Meanwhile, preparations for the Spring Breeders’ Festival are already in full swing. Please mark your calendar and plan to attend our Annual Membership Meeting and Awards Dinner on Friday, April 25, 2014, followed by an exciting day of racing on Saturday, April 26, 2014. During the Membership Meeting and Awards Dinner you will also have the opportunity to meet in person the entire Board of Directors. We all look forward to seeing you there! With best wishes for a successful foaling, breeding and racing season.
