Chapter 24 The Reception of Geoffrey of Monmouth’s Work in Italy Fabrizio De Falco The reception of Geoffrey of Monmouth’s work in medieval Italy is an integral part of two fascinating veins of inquiry: the early appearance of the Matter of Britain in Italy and its evolution in various social, political, and cultural con- texts around the Peninsula.1 At the beginning of the 12th century, before the De gestis Britonum was written, an unedited Arthurian legend was carved on Modena Cathedral’s Portale della Pescheria, a stop for pilgrims headed to Rome along the Via Francigena.2 Remaining in the vicinity of Modena, the only con- tinental witness of the First Variant Version of the DGB (Paris, Bibliothèque de l’Arsenal, 982) can be connected to Nonantola Abbey.3 Moving to the kingdom of Sicily, in 1165 the archbishop of Otranto commissioned an enormous mosaic for the cathedral, and Arthur is depicted in one of the various scenes, astride a goat, fighting a large cat.4 To describe Geoffrey of Monmouth’s reception in 1 E.G. Uses of the Past in Twelfth-Century Germany: The Case of the Middle High German Kaiserchronik Mark Chinca and Christopher Young Abstract: Despite its broad transmission and its influence on vernacular chronicle writing in the German Middle Ages, the Kaiserchronik has not received the attention from historians that it deserves. This article describes some of the ideological, historical, and literary contexts that shaped the original composition of the chronicle in the middle of the twelfth century: Christian salvation history, the revival of interest in the Roman past, the consolidation of a vernacular literature of knowledge, and the emergence of a practice of writing history as “serious entertainment” by authors such as Geoffrey of Monmouth and Godfrey of Viterbo. Placed in these multiple contexts, which have a European as well as a specifically German dimension, the Kaiserchronik emerges as an important document of the uses of the past in fostering a sense of German identity among secular and ecclesiastical elites in the high Middle Ages. The Kaiserchronik, completed probably in Regensburg ca.1150, is a seminal work.1 Monumental in scale, it comprises over seventeen thousand lines of Middle High German verse and is the first verse chronicle in any European language. Through a grand narrative of the reigns of thirty-six Roman and nineteen German emperors filling a timespan of twelve centuries, it throws the spotlight on ethnicity, religion and cultural identity, and on the relationship between church and empire, as these issues play out on the various stages of Rome, Germany and their territorial outposts in the Mediterranean basin.2 The Kaiserchronik has several claims to uniqueness. -

Practicing Love of God in Medieval Jerusalem, Gaul and Saxony
he collection of essays presented in “Devotional Cross-Roads: Practicing Love of God in Medieval Gaul, Jerusalem, and Saxony” investigates test case witnesses of TChristian devotion and patronage from Late Antiquity to the Late Middle Ages, set in and between the Eastern and Western Mediterranean, as well as Gaul and the regions north of the Alps. Devotional practice and love of God refer to people – mostly from the lay and religious elite –, ideas, copies of texts, images, and material objects, such as relics and reliquaries. The wide geographic borders and time span are used here to illustrate a broad picture composed around questions of worship, identity, reli- gious affiliation and gender. Among the diversity of cases, the studies presented in this volume exemplify recurring themes, which occupied the Christian believer, such as the veneration of the Cross, translation of architecture, pilgrimage and patronage, emergence of iconography and devotional patterns. These essays are representing the research results of the project “Practicing Love of God: Comparing Women’s and Men’s Practice in Medieval Saxony” guided by the art historian Galit Noga-Banai, The Hebrew University of Jerusalem, and the histori- an Hedwig Röckelein, Georg-August-University Göttingen. The sun is shining and I am preparing to leave for Bruges. I have finally decided to pull the stone from the wall of my cell, the stone which has hidden for I5 years those strange notes I compiled. I don't have the courage to reread them. I will simply add to them this short preamble and a brief conclusion, and put them back in their hiding place. Really, though, I ought to destroy them. When it was all over, and the Superior General asked me to turn in those notes he himself had ordered me to take, I did in fact hand them over, but not before I had made a copy. Just as I had predicted, the Superior General burned the pages without even so much as a glance. I don't know why I saved this copy, it's the only real disobedience I've ever been guilty of, and it is unlikely, given my age, that I will commit any others. Many times I thought of pulling out the stone, sometimes to reread my notes, sometimes to destroy them. Finally, I did neither of these two things. Today I have been assigned my final mission to Bruges, so I am leaving our monastery in Cologne for good. Not being able either to bring these parchments with me or destroy them, I will quickly add a beginning and an end, and return them to their casket of stone. -

Benjamin Reilly Cardinal Numbers: Changing Patterns of Malaria and Mortality in Rome, 494–1850 For the past two millennia, Rome has probably attracted more foreign visitors from Europe than any other European city. As the seat of an ancient empire, and the theoretical capital of the revived Holy Roman Empire founded by Charlemagne in 800, Rome was for centuries highly coveted by German monarchs seeking the imperial crown, not to mention territory, influence, and revenue south of the Alps. Pilgrims came to Rome in a steady stream from at least the eighth century; after 1300, these streams swelled into rivers during the years of the holy Jubilees. Moreover, as the mother city of the mother church, Rome attracted a parade of litigants, job-seekers, envoys, and diplomats from every corner of Europe, as well as newly elected bishops and archbishops who were encouraged, or required, to have their offices validated by the pope. Rome was also a city of the arts, not just because of the still-standing ves- tiges of antiquity but also because of the Church’s patronage of resident colonies of painters, artists, and scholars, who attracted “Grand Tourists” from the seventeenth to nineteenth centuries. Many roads, and many motives, carried Europeans to Rome.1 Unfortunately, these roads led to a destination rendered dan- gerous by endemic malarial fevers. HUFFMAN This article explores medieval and Renaissance evidence for the origins and rneaning of the imperial regalia privileges exercised by the Greek archbishops of Cyprus, said to have been granted by the Ernperor Zeno ( c. 42 to 9- I), along with autocephaly, upon the discovery of the relics of the Apostle Barnabas. Though clairned to have existed ab antiquo, these imperial privileges in fact have their origin in the late sixteenth century and bear the characteristics of western Latin ecclesial and political thought. With the Donation of Constantine as their pmtotype, they bolster the case rnade to the Italians and the French for saving Christian Cyprus frorn the Turks. -

HENRY II, 1154–89 (1) Henry II and Thomas Becket HENRY II was one of the most remarkable characters in English history. We know a great deal about him. He lived in an age when it was fashionable to comment on the activities of kings, when history and especially contemporary history was popular; and Henry impressed his contemporaries so strongly that they could not refrain from saying what they thought of him. Most of them disliked him. His enemies found him too brilliant and mercurial, too overwhelming to be forgiven; those close to him feared both his charm and his occasional outbursts of wild anger, and were exasperated by his unpredictable activity. But they all admired him. He was a great figure in European society, comparable in prestige to the Emperor Frederick Barbarossa. -

I demonstrate that Frederick's ideological system was based on a fluctuating set of German, Frankish, and Roman identities, which constituted an imperial identity. By analysing Frederick’s words and deeds as reported by his contemporaries and comparing them to the Cappenberg Head which he commissioned, I conclude that Frederick alternated between these various identities based on his political situation, and that new ideological developments during his reign, such as the introduction of the term sacrum imperium , stemmed directly from the political discernment of Frederick and his court. Keywords : Franks, identity, Frederick Barbarossa, Charlemagne The establishment of source-based (scientific) history in the age of Ranke was no small intellectual achievement. Historians turned their eyes to the building blocks of history: source texts. While other sources can amplify our understanding of an event, a process or a structure, only the text can provide the historian with a proper intelligible narrative. Even scientific history, however, did not account for the very existence of a narrative, which has been subjected to scrutiny more recently. Thus, identity as the primary unit of narrative formation, and therefore of all historical ideologies, went mostly unnoticed by the great scholars of ideology. -

Leyser We often credit Frederick Barbarossa with large political designs: imperial control and direct rule in Italy driven home by rigorous jurisdiction and fiscal exactions backed by force. To accomplish these ends and to confront the papacy, he sought to gather Ger- man aristocratic and knightly society about his person and to appeal to them in mani- festos that have lost none of their sonorous grandiloquence even today. Embattled with Lombard cities and then with Pope Alexander III, he stands for decades of imperial intransigence, the quest for a past that had never been and a hard-bitten refusal to ac- cept, let alone support, the post-Reform papacy's new role and place in the Latin Chris- tian world. Yet in the end the emperor was surprisingly willing to abandon these designs without undue qualms, though he may have had little choice. In what follows, I hope to show Barbarossa above all as the architect of his own house's fortunes, and to show how his concern for the enhancement of Hohenstaufen possessions and the endowment of his sons squared with his governing functions and tempered the Hohen- staufen polity as a commonweal of princes, lesser nobles, and emergent towns. It will also be shown how Hohenstaufen family gains underlay the later constitutional con- flicts of the reign, not least the fall of Henry the Lion.
