A Journal of Literary Translation 22–23 (2009/2010): 117–132 doi:10.4467/16891864ePC.13.005.0859 MARIJANA HAMeršak TRANSLATIONS OF FAIRY TALES BETWEEN NATIONAL MOBILIZATION AND COMMODIFICATION German Children’s Literature in Nineteenth-century Croatia Abstract: A brief overview of translation within folklore studies and children’s literature studies leads to the focal point of this article: nineteenth-century Croatian versions of German fairy tales. The analysis concentrates on the textual and paratextual features of the Croatian texts, their relationship to the source texts and their involvement in national integration. Moreover, they are examined as part of empirical research in the history of reading: children’s reception of German children’s books in nineteenth- century Croatia. Finally, they are discussed from the book history perspective: adoption of German children’s literature genres and publishing strategies in the field of nineteenth- century Croatian children’s literature. The discussion of these three aspects indicates that the appropriation of German fairy tales in nineteenth-century Croatian society followed various (oral, written, German-language, Croatian-language) routes and had different outcomes. The complexity of these processes reminds us that literature is not only a symbolic (written, textual), but also a material (reading, editing, publishing) enterprise. It also reminds us that children’s literature is entangled not only in concepts of childhood and literature, but also in other cultural concepts such as nation and class. In order to add to the research in sociolinguistics, I direct my study towards finding connections between adjectives used to describe female versus male gendered characters, and how the data may reflect and perpetuate cultural gender norms. Research by Robinson (2010) comments significantly on the seven German editions of Kinder und Haus Märchen by the Grimm brothers; however, linguistic trends of these texts may not be indicative of gender norms and social constructs of gender in the English-speaking communities, specifically those that exist in the United Kingdom and North America. This study, therefore focuses on the English translations of two stories that appear in the Grimm brothers’ work; “Ashputtel,” and “Hans in Luck,” in order to gather trends and data about the appearance and shift in adjectival use towards males and females.

Fairy Tales by Grimm Brothers Roshni Subba Assistant Professor Department of English University of Calcutta Presentation created for the students of the Department of English,University of Calcutta by Roshni Subba Introduction • Jacob Ludwig Karl and Wilhelm Karl Grimm first published their collection as Children’s and Household Tales in 1812, known as Kinder-und Hausmärchen in German. • The first edition of the second volume (1815)acknowledges Dorothea Viehmann, a woman from the countryside, who had retained in her memory, legends and stories, as one of their contributors. • The first edition was not quite seen as suitable for family reading, therefore in 1819, in the second edition, the stories had to be revised according to the moral dispensation of the present time. Presentation created for the students of the Department of English,University of Calcutta by Roshni Subba The Process of Collection • Since 1806, the Grimms started collecting legends, songs, sagas, and stories. • Their Professor Friedrich Karl von Savigny was a great influence on them. Jacob even accompanied him to Paris to do a research on the legal manuscripts of the Middle Ages. • They had no intention to publish their collection at first, but were just contributing materials to Achim von Arnim ’s and Clemens Brentano’s collection of popular songs. • Achim von Arnim encouraged the brothers to publish the first two volumes of Kinder-und Hausmärchen in 1812 and 1815. • They were not looking for literary materials but were looking for something very simple, which would reflect the tastes of ordinary folks.
