The program also makes ample provision for relaxation and tun. I know that you recognize the importance of the Mission and hope that you will take the time to recommend some young men who, in your Judgment, have the qualifications to be pa.rt of the group. It would be especially help:f'ul if you would speak with the students you want to recommend and enlist their interest in the Mission even before you submit their names . But this is not a must.

The reservations will be handled on a first-come, first. served basis. I would, therefore, urge you to give this matter your earliest attention.

TO: B'nai B'rith Hillel Foundation Directors and Counselors

FROM: Abraham S. Hyman

I am sending you this memorandum with the approval of Rabbi Oscar Groner.

I. 1968 UJA UNIVERSITY STUDY MISSlai

We would appreciate your help in securing eligible candidates for this year's UJA University Study Mission.

The enthusiastic reaction of the twenty-six men who participated in the first such Study Mission, which we conducted last summer, bas persuaded us not only to repeat the project this year, but to expand the size o! the group to forty five.

The Mission this summer will extend from June 18 to August 13, 1968, and will include several days visits to Paris, Marseilles, Geneva, Munich, Berlin, London and 32 days in Israel.

To be eligible, the candidate must be a male and lDlder twenty-four years o£ age and have completed his freshman year at a university or college by June 18th. The cost to the participants is $1300.00, which includes the overseas flights and all travel, accommodations and food abroad.

Our primary aim is to offer the experience to men who have leadership potential. We feel that you are in a unique position to help in the selection of the men who merit an invitation to participate in the Mission and we would ask you to interview the students you consider eligible and give us your recommendations. You may rest assured that we will give the most serious consideration to the application of anyone you recommend who, a1ter an interview, expressed an interest in participating in the Mission. If you will send us the names of these men, we will follow up on your recommendations.

I am enclosing a draft of a letter which you might use to invite students for a personal interview with you.

II. STUDENT CAMPAIGNS

I am enclosing samples of material that is available tor student campaigns, together Vith' a form that you may use to order quantities ot this material.

ASH/is Encl. .. SUGGESTED DRAFT OF LETTER TO UJA tlNIVERSI'IY STUDY MISSI<:fi PROSPECTS

Dear ...... I am very eager to talk to you about your participation in a Univer-

sity Study Mission this summer which is being sponsored by the national

office of the United Jewish Appeal. The greatest care is being taken

to limit the group to men who are congenial and who have leadership

potential.

The Mission will extend from June 18 to August 13 and will include

several days visits in Paris, Marseilles, Geneva, Munich, Berlin and

more than a month in Israel.

Judging from the reactions of the twenty-six students who participated

in last year's Study Mission, which was the first of its kind, I am con-

vinced that you would find the experience an unforgettable one. In every

place you would visit you would meet with Jewish students and with the

leadership of the local Jewish community. In Israel you would make an

intensive study of every important facet of the life of the country.

I am informed that tbe itinerary, as planned, makes ample provision

for relaxation and fun.

Please call me for an appointment when we can discuss the Mission

in person.

Sincerely,

(ASH/is-2/1/68) T~ $10,000 AND OVER CONTRIBUTCBS

November 14, 1967

In the summer of 1967, the UJA conducted the first overseas Univer sity Study Mission. Twenty- six students from communities, large and small, spent eight weeks visiting France, Germany, Switzerland, Austria , Greece and all of Israel, including some of the recently occupied territories.

The members of the University Study Mission met with leaders of Jewish conmunities abroad, engaged in dialogues with their contemporaries and observed at first hand the programs of the Jewish Agency, Joint Distri bution Committee, ORT and United Rias Service in Europe and Israel. These experiences had a great impact upon the students at a crucial period of their lives.

In view of the success of the first University Mission, it has been decided to conduct a similar program in the summer of 1968. The cost per person will be $1300.00 which will include air travel, meals and hotels for eight weeks, from June 20 to August 15, 1968.

The 1968 University Study Mission is limited to fifty male partici pants from the entire country, who have completed their freshman year, and are under the age of 24. We are interested in candidates who quality on the basis of their potential for leadership on the campus or in the community. Reservations are now being handled on a first- come first- served basis. It is, therefore, important that we receive any indication of interest on your .Part e.s soon as possible. Sincerely yours,

Max M. Fisher General Cbainr.a.n
