EVIDENCE OF ORPHIC MYSTERY CULT IN ARCHAIC MACEDONIAN AND THRACIAN BURIALS by Lisa Tweten A THESIS SUBMITTED IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF MASTER OF ARTS in The Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies (Ancient Cultures, Religion and Ethnicity) THE UNIVERSITY OF BRITISH COLUMBIA (Vancouver) October 2015 © Lisa Tweten, 2015 Abstract Gold foil is found in numerous burials in the Mediterranean dating to the early Mycenaean period and the material was used as clothing attachments, jewelry, headbands, wreaths, and other decorative adornments. One of the more distinctive uses of gold foil was as a mouth-plate (or epistomion), which is an ellipsoidal or rhomboidal piece of gold foil placed on the mouth of the deceased in a burial. An apparent increase in artifact occurrence in Macedonia during the archaic period was the impetus for this thesis, as a change in grave goods suggests a change in funerary rituals. This change may be linked to the rise of local private cults, including mystery cults, that took place in the archaic period. Furthermore, these artifacts are stylistically, materially, and contextually similar to the later Classical and Hellenistic periods use of gold foil for the inscribed Orphic gold tablets. The inscribed Orphic tablets have clear links to mystery cults and are related to both the initiation and the afterlife expectations of the deceased. Taking a selection of the uninscribed gold foil mouth-plates found in archaic burials of Macedonia and Thrace, this thesis examines the potential links between these two practices and asks whether the uninscribed gold foil mouth-plates can be assigned to the category of 'things Orphic', or if they are part of an unrelated burial tradition. -

an offprint from Aristophanes in Performance 421 BC–AD 2007 Peace, Birds and Frogs ❖ EDITED BY EDITH HALL AND AMANDA WRIGLEY Modern Humanities Research Association and Maney Publishing Legenda: Oxford, 2007 C H A P T E R 4 ❖ The English-Speaking Aristophanes 1650–1914 Edith Hall Introduction In Chs. 5 and 6 it will be seen that as early as the 1650s an Irishman could use Aristophanes to criticize English imperialism, while by the early nineteenth century the possibility was being explored in France of staging a topical adaptation of Aristophanes. In 1817, moreover, Eugène Scribe could base his vaudeville show Les Comices d’Athènes on Ecclesiazusae.1 Aristophanes became an important figure for German Romantics, including Hegel, after Friedrich Schlegel had in 1794 published his fine essay on the aesthetic value of Greek comedy.2 There Schlegel proposed that the Romantic ideals of Freedom and Joy (Freiheit, Freude) are integral to all art; since Schlegel regarded comedy as containing them to the highest degree, for him it was the most democratic of all art forms. Aristophanic comedy made a fundamental contribution to his theory of a popular genre with emancipatory potential.3 One result of the philosophical interest in Aristophanes was that in the early decades of the nineteenth century, until the 1848 revolution, the German theatre itself felt the impact of the ancient comic writer: topical Lustspiele displayed interest in his plays, which provided a model for German poets longing for a political comedy, for example the remarkable satirical trilogy Napoleon by Friedrich Rückert (1815–18).4 This international context illuminates the experiences undergone by Aristophanic comedy in England, and what became known as Britain consequent upon the 1707 Act of Union. -

KONSTANTINOS KYRIAKOS BETWEEN TWO CENTURIES CONTEMPORARY GREEK CINEMA AND THE READINGS OF ANCIENT GREEK TRAGEDY ABSTRACT: In the present paper, the Greek films that have made use of ele ments from ancient tragedy and myth while commenting on the current polit ical and social changes in Greece, the Balkans and Europe, are recorded and critically presented. Ancient myth and ancient tragedy adaptations in Greek cinematography during the 21st century are determined by the landmarks of the 2004 Olympic Games and the consequences of the 2010 economic/so cial crisis. After describing all types of films — and especially those of Theo Angelopoulos —, the paper focuses on the relation of ancient tragedy with contemporary immigration experience in the films Hades (1996, Stelios Char alampopoulos) and Hostage (2005, Constantine Giannaris). In Hades, the fic tional Heracles brings back Alcestis from the “Hades” of Hoxha’s regime in Albania. Constantine Giannaris in Hostage (2005) connects the tragedy of Sophocles’s Aias with xenophobia and the construction of maleness. An Index of the relevant films of the period (19892018) is included. INTRODUCTION T IS A FOREIGN FIlm, where its most alienating part appears to be “Ipurely Greek, within the cultural notion of the term, since it faces and reconstructs both directly and indirectly an ancient tragedy, a sheer Greek mode of expression.”1 The film Interruption (2015) by Yorgos Zois, to which the writer Di mitris Dimitriadis refers, is one of the most interesting cinematic portrayals of the relations of tragedy with politics during “the period of the crisis”. International Society for History Didactics ISHD University of Tallinn 27-30 September 2006 Historical Consciousness Historical Culture Politics questions history education Debates on Greek History Textbooks Paper presented to the International Conference of ISHD in Tallinn Maria REPOUSSI School of Education Aristotelian University of Thessaloniki [email protected] Debates on History and/or Social Studies Textbooks constitute a global historical phenomenon in contemporary world. To cite the well-known phrase of Henri Moniot, the textbook, witness for what happening in teaching practice 1 is in the same time the “result of political, economic and cultural activities, battles, and compromises"2. These debates are viewed as cultural wars and they manifested in many countries, in Japan, Korea, India, USA, etc. If there is a common feature in these cultural wars is the relationship between politics and History education. In Greece as in many other countries school history textbooks trigger intense reactions and controversies. In order to comprehend the physiognomy of these debates, we must visit the context of these textbooks, the curricula aspects of the context of History Education in Greece. I. The History Curriculum In Greece, History Education is under a regime of strict supervision by the state, ‘a status of a hostage’ 3. Some sides of this status are the following: 1. School history is required to follow a centrally planned and detailed Curriculum , obligatory for all the schools in the country. This programme is almost exclusively oriented on Greek history and on the celebration of events that highlight the glorious Greek past. What is involved is essentially a genealogy of the nation. -

PERFORMANCE PHILOSOPHY INTRODUCTION: CRISIS AND THE IM/POSSIBILITY OF THOUGHT WILL DADDARIO INDEPENDENT SCHOLAR THERON SCHMIDT UNSW SYDNEY We do not so much write about crisis as write from crisis. “Crisis” has become a ubiquitous shorthand for the apparently unsolvable: the disruptions of human-driven climate change, the displacement of millions of migrants and refugees, the decay of representational institutions and the rise of populism and demagogues, the ongoing debacle of carnage in Syria, and the reverberations of “the 2008 global financial crisis” (as if there was something particular to 2008!) as license for so-called austerity measures. But to describe these particular situations, each with its own particular history, as demonstrating some general category of ‘crisis’ is to perpetuate a narrative structure that is far from neutral or disinterested. There is a long history of the production and mobilization of crisis—a ‘shock doctrine’, as Naomi Klein (2007) diagnosed so influentially. Such a production is material, involving the slow or sudden emergence of a set of disruptive (and frequently unliveable) circumstances. But perhaps just as importantly, it is discursive: deploying ‘crisis’ as a description of those circumstances justifies interventions by interested parties, which are often interventions whose plans precede the crisis itself. As Klein puts it, ‘crisis works’ (155ff, emphasis added)—that is, the label of “crisis” is not just descriptive but performative, producing helplessness, legitimating a particular response,
