END OF TERM PRESS RELEASE The Epidaurus Lyceum - International Summer School of Ancient Drama successfully completed its inaugural year on 19 July. The programme was realised under the auspices and support of the Hellenic Ministry of Culture and Sports, in collaboration with the Department of Theatre Studies, School of Fine Arts, University of the Peloponnese and the support of the Municipality of Epidaurus. A brand-new educational institution operating under the Athens & Epidaurus Festival, the Lyceum welcomed 120 students of drama schools and theatre studies university departments, as well as young actors from around the world for its first annual theme “The Arrival of the Outsider.” The Epidaurus Lyceum students attended a main five-hour practical workshop daily. In 2017, the teaching staff of the Lyceum for practical workshops consisted of the following: Phillip Zarrilli, a celebrated director, performer, and teacher of a technique for actors combining yoga and Asian martial arts; Simon Abkarian and Catherine Schaub Abkarian, core members of Ariane Mnouchkine’s legendary Théâtre du Soleil; Rosalba Torres Guerrero, one of the core members of Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker’s Rosas dance group, along with dancer and choreographer Koen Augustijnen; Enrico Bonavera, actor and drama teacher, who has worked closely with Milan’s Piccolo Teatro; RootlessRoot, an ever-active dance company who has created the “Fighting Monkey” programme; Greek directors Martha Frintzila, Simos Kakalas, Sotiris Karamesinis, Kostantinos Ntellas, actress Rinio Kyriazi, and others. The 2017 programme of studies consisted of theory workshops, lectures, and masterclasses, in accordance to this year’s overarching theme. The majority of these events were open to the public, in an effort to strengthen the Lyceum’s ties to the local community. -

Having been born in Greece, and having lived there till my early twenties, it is the place that holds all my childhood memories, my first encounters with dance, my friends, and my family. From a very early age I remember how I always used to say that I wanted to study dance and then move to the US to pursue my dream. Back then I was not sure what that dream was, other than leaving Greece, where I often felt like I did not belong. Being here now, in the US, I think I found it and I must admit that when I first begun my pursuit in graduate studies in dance, I was very hesitant to engage in research concerning Greece. -

Signature 2 To the five Albanian families for opening their homes and sharing their stories with me. 3 Abstract My research explores the dialectical relationship between identity and the conceptualisation/creation of history and heritage in migration by studying a socially excluded group in Greece, that of Albanian families. Even though the Albanian community has more than twenty years of presence in the country, its stories, often invested with otherness, remain hidden in the Greek ‘mono-cultural’ landscape. In opposition to these stigmatising discourses, my study draws on movements democratising the past and calling for engagements from below by endorsing the socially constructed nature of identity and the denationalisation of memory. A nine-month fieldwork with five Albanian families took place in their domestic and neighbourhood settings in the areas of Athens and Piraeus. Based on critical ethnography, data collection was derived from participant observation, conversational interviews and participatory techniques. From an individual and family group point of view the notion of habitus led to diverse conceptions of ethnic identity, taking transnational dimensions in families’ literal and metaphorical back- and-forth movements between Greece and Albania. -

7. Political Development and Change
F. Yaprak Gursoy 1 Democracy and Dictatorship in Greece Research Question: From its independence in 1821 until 1974 democracy in Greece witnessed several different types of military interventions. In 1909, the military initiated a short-coup and quickly returned to its barracks, allowing democracy to function until the 1920s. During the 1920s, the armed forces intervened in politics frequently, without establishing any form of dictatorship. This trend has changed in 1936, when the Greek military set up an authoritarian regime that lasted until the Second World War. In 1967, again, the Generals established a dictatorship, only to be replaced by democracy in 1974. Since then, the Armed Forces in Greece do not intervene in politics, permitting democracy to be consolidated. What explains the different behaviors of the military in Greece and the consequent regime types? This is the central puzzle this paper will try to solve. Studying Greece is important for several reasons. First, this case highlights an often understudied phenomenon, namely military behavior. Second, analyzing Greece longitudinally is critical: military behavior varied within the country in time. What explains the divergent actions of the same institution in the same polity? Looking at Greece’s wider history will allow showing how the same coalitional partners and how continuous economic growth led to different outcomes in different circumstances and what those different circumstances were. Finally, studying the divergent behavior of the Greek military helps to understand democratic consolidation in this country. Even though Greece has a record of military interventions and unstable democracies, since 1974, it is considered to have a consolidated democracy. -

Pappas Interdisciplinary March 2021 VOLUME 1 ISSUE NO. 3 Center for Hellenic Studies and the Friends of Hellenic Studies From the Director Dear Friends, On March 25, 1821, in the city of Kalamata in the southern Peloponnesos, the chieftains from the region of Mani convened the Messinian Senate of Kalamata to issue a revolutionary proclamation for “Liberty.” The commander Petrobey Mavromichalis then wrote the following appeal to the Americans: “Citizens of the United States of America!…Having formed the resolution to live or die for freedom, we are drawn toward you by a just sympathy; since it is in your land that Liberty has fixed her abode, and by you that she is prized as by our fathers.” He added, “It is for you, citizens of America, to crown this glory, in aiding us to purge Greece from the barbarians, who for four hundred years have polluted the soil.” The Greek revolutionaries understood themselves as part of a universal struggle for freedom. It is this universal struggle for freedom that the Pappas Center for Hellenic Studies and Stockton University raises up and celebrates on the occasion of the 200th anniversary of the beginning of the Greek Revolution in 1821. For a decade they’ve been one of the most influential contributors to the underground scene in Athens presenting art, music and live events in obscure venues throughout the city. Their organic take on music and DYI-culture has also brought them to several venues across Europe (London, Berlin, Belgrade, Florence, Istanbul, Moscow) and international acclaim. Giorgio Andreotta Calò Giorgio Andreotta Calò research developed though a process of withdrawing fragments from reality and the re-appropriation of architecture, landscape and his own history. His artworks may be interpreted as “active residues” of processes and actions that have take place in a specific time and space. Born in Venice in 1979, he studied at the Accademia di Belle Arti di Venezia (1999-2005) and at the KunstHochSchule Berlin (2003-2004). -

Markella-Elpida Tsichla University of Patras *Corresponding Author: Markella-Elpida Tsichla ABSTRACT:- The iconography of the Greek War of Independence is quite broad and it includes both real and imaginary themes. Artists who were inspired by this particular and extremely important historical event originated from a variety of countries, some were already well-known, such as Eugène Delacroix, others were executing official commissions from kings of Western countries, and most of them were driven by the spirit of romanticism. This paper shall not so much focus on matters of art criticism, but rather explore the manner in which facts have been represented in specific works of art, referring to political, religious and cultural issues, which are still relevant to this day. In particular, I shall comment on The Massacre at Chios by Eugène Delacroix, painted in 1824, the 39 Scenes from the Greek War of Independence by Peter von Hess, painted in 1835 and commissioned by King Ludwig I of Bavaria, and the frieze in the Trophy Room (currently Eleftherios Venizelos Hall) in Otto’s palace in Athens, currently housing the Hellenic Parliament, themed around the Greek War of Independence and the subsequent events. This great work was designed by German sculptor Ludwig Michael Schantahaler in 1840 and “transferred” to the walls of the hall by a group of Greek and German artists. -
