Prior to this development, small offshore islands were of central importance for marine related activity due to their proximity to fishing grounds. This article presents four settlements on small and “marginal” islands in Arctic Norway from 68◦19’ to 71◦05’Nlatitude as cases that illustrate the centrality of such locations in a maritime context since the Viking Age (AD 800–1050).

Havfisk har skrudd av fryseriene på tre av trålerne for å holde landanleggene med ferskfisk. Kombinert med gratis line til fremmedflåten, vil de to Norway Seafoods-ansatte være sikret arbeid ut året. Må øke farten Hopper Helt siden 1990-tallet har Båtsfjord titulert seg som fiskerihovedstaden. Tidli- gere i år gjorde kommunen betegnelsen offisiell, og bruker tittelen i alle sam- menhenger når fiskeværet på nordsiden av Varanger- etter Wirkola halvøya skal markedsføres. En slik tittel krever imidlertid sitt, og fiske- rinæringen langs kysten forventer at man heretter vil se et større innslag av innovative løsninger her i forhold til produksjon og salg av hvitfisk. Dessverre har det sviktet på mange felt. I dag er det ikke i Båtsfjord man kommer opp med de nye løsningene len- ger. I forhold til nyvinnin- ger innenfor både filet og mottak har stedets indus- tribedrifter sakket akterut sammenlignet med mange andre langs kysten. Nå er både Båtsfjord- bruket og Norway Seafoods avdeling i Båtsfjord rett nok inne i moderniseringspro- sesser. Vi savner imidlertid det ekstra gearet fiskevæ- ret hadde for 20 år siden – da initiativene til nye løsninger alltid kom herfra. Vi håper at det er mulig å skru tiden tilbake på dette området, for fiskeværet har menneskelige ressurser til å være med å forme framti- den innenfor hvitfisknæ- ringen. Motivasjonen for å gå inn i forvaltningsutviklingen av turistfiske, er et ønske om å gi tilbake til regionen som har formet meg, og som nå står i samfunnsmessige omveltninger. Dette mastergradsprosjektet har vært krevende og tidvis altoppslukende. Prosessen har også fylt min egen verktøykasse gjennom kunnskapsdannelse og erfaringer. Jeg ønsker å takke mine informanter for å ha tatt imot meg og vist meg tillit. Uten dere, hadde ikke denne oppgaven blitt til. I Nord-Norge har opplevelsesturisme i form av turistfiske blitt en utstrakt næringsvirksomhet langs kysten. Denne næringsformen har potensiale for å bidra med lokalt forankret verdiskapning i små kystsamfunn. I mange småsamfunn har næringsformen skapt arbeidsplasser og verdiskapning.
