  • Ce Théâtre De L'opéra-Comique, Vous Savez À Quel État
REVUE DES DEUX MONDES , 15th July 1882, pp. 453-466.

  • Branding Brussels Musically: Cosmopolitanism and Nationalism in the Interwar Years
BRANDING BRUSSELS MUSICALLY: COSMOPOLITANISM AND NATIONALISM IN THE INTERWAR YEARS Catherine A. Hughes A dissertation submitted to the faculty at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Department of Music. Chapel Hill 2015 Approved by: Annegret Fauser Mark Evan Bonds Valérie Dufour John L. Nádas Chérie Rivers Ndaliko © 2015 Catherine A. Hughes ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ii ABSTRACT Catherine A. Hughes: Branding Brussels Musically: Cosmopolitanism and Nationalism in the Interwar Years (Under the direction of Annegret Fauser) In Belgium, constructions of musical life in Brussels between the World Wars varied widely: some viewed the city as a major musical center, and others framed the city as a peripheral space to its larger neighbors. Both views, however, based the city’s identity on an intense interest in new foreign music, with works by Belgian composers taking a secondary importance. This modern and cosmopolitan concept of cultural achievement offered an alternative to the more traditional model of national identity as being built solely on creations by native artists sharing local traditions. Such a model eluded a country with competing ethnic groups: the Francophone Walloons in the south and the Flemish in the north. Openness to a wide variety of music became a hallmark of the capital’s cultural identity. As a result, the forces of Belgian cultural identity, patriotism, internationalism, interest in foreign culture, and conflicting views of modern music complicated the construction of Belgian cultural identity through music. By focusing on the work of the four central people in the network of organizers, patrons, and performers that sustained the art music culture in the Belgian capital, this dissertation challenges assumptions about construction of musical culture.

Carolyn Kirk A Thesis Submitted for the Degree of PhD at the University of St Andrews 1985 Full metadata for this item is available in Research@StAndrews:FullText at: http://research-repository.st-andrews.ac.uk/ Please use this identifier to cite or link to this item: http://hdl.handle.net/10023/7282 This item is protected by original copyright The Viennese vogue for opera—comique 1790-1819 submitted by Carolyn Kirk In fulfilment of the requirements for Ph.D. degree of the University of St. Andrews, November, 1983 ii ABSTRACT In the mid-eighteenth century, Vienna, like other European cities, began to manifest the influence of modern French culture; In 1752, a troupe of French players was appointed to the Austrian court to entertain the aristocracy. Four years later, links were forged • between the Parisian and Viennese stages via Favart who corresponded with Count Durazzo in Vienna and sent opera scores and suggestions about personnel. In 1765 problems with finance and leadership led to dismissal of Vienna's first French troupe but others performed there for shorter periods between .:1765 and 1780. Opera-comique was introduced to Vienna by French players. Occasional performances of opera-comique in German translation took place in Vienna during the 1770s. When, in 1778, the Nationalsingspiel was founded, French opera formed part of the repertoire because of a lack of good German works. A renewed interest in opèra-comique began in about 1790 when fear of revolutionary France and the reigns of Leopold and Franz led to a return of interest in Italian opera at the court theatres, and the virtual disappearance of opêra-comique from its repertoire.

  • REVUE DES DEUX MONDES, 1St February 1865, Pp
REVUE DES DEUX MONDES , 1st February 1865, pp. 752-768.

CATALOGUE OF COMPOSITIONS COMPILED BY MADELEINE MILHAUD FROM THE COMPOSER'S NOTEBOOKS AND REVISED BY JANE HOHFELD GALANTE The translator owes a debt of gratitude to Mme. Milhaud for the many hours of assistance, helpful counsel, and gracious hospitality she contributed to the revision of this catalogue. Very special appreciation is also due toR. Wood Massi for his extensive work in verifying and re-ordering data pertaining to the music, to Jean-Franfois Denis for his excellently detailed preparation of the final copy, and to Dr. Katharine M. Warne for her constructive perusal of the proofs and her many invaluable suggestions. I should like to thank the Mills College Department ofMusic for providing research funds and the Mills College Library for giving me unlimited access to the Milhaud collection. I am especially grateful to Eva Konrad Kreshka for her unstinting encouragement and enthusiasm. The careful reader will note some discrepancies between this catalogue, which is based on Milhaud's notebooks, and the printed scores, mostly in regard to exact dates, places ofcomposition, and timing. In the majority of instances, the notebook entry is the one used except where information given on the score adds something ofspecial interest. !.H. G. Department of The University of British Columbia Vancouver, Canada Date DE-6 (2/88) ABSTRACT François-Henri-Joseph Blaze (1784-1857), who published under the pseudonym Castil- Blaze, was an important figure in French musical life during the period of the Bourbon Restoration (1815-1830). In his historical monographs, he was the first writer to address the wider French public to explain to them the history and practical functioning of their major musical institutions. As France's first professional music critic and the author of some 340 articles in the prestigious Journal des débatshetween 1820 and 1832, he created a place for literate writing about music on the front pages of the most respected daily news• paper in France, providing the French public for the first time with a regular account of Parisian musical activities written from a musician's point of view.

French Opera and the French Revolution Etienne Nicolas Méhul Savannah Dotson An Honors Thesis submitted for partial fulfillment of the requirement for graduation with Honors in History. Hamline University St. Paul, MN April 2014 Committee: Advisor, Dr. Nurith Zmora Dr. George Chu Dr. John Mazis Dr. Elissa Harbert Abstract Although Etienne Nicolas Méhul is relatively unknown today, he was greatly respected by his contemporaries, including Beethoven, Cherubini and Berlioz. He rose to popularity and notoriety during the most turbulent years of the French Revolution, when most intellectuals fled for their lives, and yet he managed to maintain his status as a favorite of the people. From an examination of some of his operas - Euphrosine (1790), Ariodant (1799) , Adrien (1792, 1799) , and Horatius Coclès (1794) - it is apparent that Méhul used thinly veiled allegories to express his views, both political and personal.

H. Turnevicius, Mus. Bac. (University of Toronto) Solist Diplom (Det kongelige danske Musikkonservatorium, K0benhavn, Danmark) B. Ed. (University of Toronto) SUPERVISOR: Dr. James A. Deaville NUMBER OF PAGES: vii, 229 ii ABSTRACT The feuilletons that François-Henri-Joseph Blaze, better known as Castil-Blaze, wrote for the Parisian daily newspaper the Journal des Débats between 1820 and 1832 represent his greatest involvement with music journalism. His appointment as chief music feuilletonist was a turning point for music criticism in France as it opened the door for trained musicians rather than just literary critics to proffer their opinions about music. While establishing himself as a translatoI of operas and adapter of pasticcios for the French stage, he addressed musical issues and created vivid portraits of the musical scene in Paris through his feuilletons signed "X.x.X." . His analyses of works were evocative in nature, calling upon the reader to re-create the events in his or her mind. Castil-Blaze's feuilletons contain opinions about music which were prefigured in his two volume book De l'Opéra en France.
