Lanham· Boulder· New York· Toronto· Plymouth, UK EIGHT Friend, Boss, and Entertainer? The Embattled Self as a Guiding Theme in the British and American Productions of The Office Janet J. Boseovski and Stuart Marcovitch "When people say to me, would you rather be thought of as a funny man or a great boss? My answer's always the same: to me, they're not mutually exclusive." -David Brent (British Series, Series 1, "Work Experience") "I guess the atmosphere that I've tried to create here is that I'm a friend first and a boss second, and probably an entertainer third." - Michael Scott (American Series, Season 1, "Pilot") A television series of British origin, The Office is filmed as a mock docu mentary examining the mundane work life of the employees of an unre markable paper supply company. The original British series debuted in 2001 and culminated in 12 episodes, followed by a two-part Christmas special in 2003. The American adaptation premiered in 2005, and while it was slow to develop a following in the United States, it ultimately amassed a sizable viewership and won critical acclaim with a number of major awards, including the 2006 Emmy for outstanding comedy series. 1 Given the number of stunning failures in the adaptation of television shows from Britain to North America,2 the success of The Office is intri guing and likely reflects a focus on issues that are universally relevant, but that have been tailored cleverly to suit the American audience.

  • THE BIRTHDAY PARTY by Harold Pinter Directed by Ian Rickson
PRESS RELEASE – Tuesday 6th March 2018 IMAGES CAN BE DOWNLOADED HERE @BdayPartyLDN / TheBirthdayParty.London Sonia Friedman Productions in association with Rupert Gavin, Tulchin Bartner Productions, 1001 Nights Productions, Scott M. Delman present THE BIRTHDAY PARTY By Harold Pinter Directed by Ian Rickson CRITICALLY ACCLAIMED 60th ANNIVERSARY REVIVAL OF THE BIRTHDAY PARTY ENTERS FINAL WEEKS AT THE HAROLD PINTER THEATRE STRICTLY LIMITED WEST END RUN STARRING TOBY JONES, STEPHEN MANGAN, ZOË WANAMAKER AND PEARL MACKIE MUST COME TO AN END ON 14TH APRIL Audiences now have just five weeks left to see the critically acclaimed West End production of playwright Harold Pinter’s The Birthday Party. The company for the major revival, which runs 60 years since the play’s debut, includes Toby Jones, Stephen Mangan, Zoë Wanamaker, Pearl Mackie, Tom Vaughan-Lawlor and Peter Wight, and is directed by Ian Rickson. Stanley Webber (Toby Jones) is the only lodger at Meg (Zoë Wanamaker) and Petey Boles’ (Peter Wight) sleepy seaside boarding house. The unsettling arrival of enigmatic strangers Goldberg (Stephen Mangan) and McCann (Tom Vaughan-Lawlor) disrupts the humdrum lives of the inhabitants and their friend Lulu (Pearl Mackie), and mundanity soon becomes menace when a seemingly innocent birthday party turns into a disturbing nightmare. Truth and alliances hastily shift in Pinter's brilliantly mysterious dark-comic masterpiece about the absurd terrors of the everyday. The production is designed by the Quay Brothers, with lighting by Hugh Vanstone, music by Stephen Warbeck, sound by Simon Baker, and casting by Amy Ball. Discussing the ways in which Flaherty prearranged character interactions and informally scripted many of the scenarios that would ultimately feature in his films, camera assistant John Taylor later recalled for filmmaker George Stoney that he wrote in his notebooks at the time the word “mockumentary” to describe this creative treatment of the nonfictional material How( ).

103 WIELAND SCHWANEBECK , Dresden The More, the Merrier? British Comedy and the Community of Laughter Amongst the many myths surrounding the birth of comedy in the ancient world is one which claims that comedy came into being as a deliberate antithesis to the solemn nature of tragedy. According to this myth, comedy was conceived when "a rowdy, drunken band of revelers mov[ed] unsteadily and noisily through the street" to mock the elaborate tragic verse which dominated the ritual festivities (Alan Sommerstein qtd. in Weitz 2010, 41). While this story is not true (at least not regarding its factual content), it does nevertheless appear as a fitting invention, for there is definitely a social aspect about comedy which renders it an experience both inclusive and exclusive at the same time. Though comedy has been identified as an essentially antisocial phenomenon by some observers – for laughter derives from challenging norms and from moving its heroes outside the accepted order into the realm of "[the] destructive and [the] anarchic" (Charney 1990, 171) – its social implications and its community-building effects are not to be overlooked. As F.H. Buckley argues in The Morality of Laughter , shared laughter builds societies and even has an economic dimension, since "[b]y establishing a bond between jester and listener, laughter permits them to promote their trust in each other. With the trust comes a greater ability to exploit profitable opportunities for joint gain" (2003, 178). The following pages will elaborate on these ideas and characterise the traditional relationship between the genre of comedy and the idea of community.
