British Comedy and the Community of Laughter Amongst the many myths surrounding the birth of comedy in the ancient world is one which claims that comedy came into being as a deliberate antithesis to the solemn nature of tragedy. According to this myth, comedy was conceived when "a rowdy, drunken band of revelers mov[ed] unsteadily and noisily through the street" to mock the elaborate tragic verse which dominated the ritual festivities (Alan Sommerstein qtd. in Weitz 2010, 41). While this story is not true (at least not regarding its factual content), it does nevertheless appear as a fitting invention, for there is definitely a social aspect about comedy which renders it an experience both inclusive and exclusive at the same time. Though comedy has been identified as an essentially antisocial phenomenon by some observers – for laughter derives from challenging norms and from moving its heroes outside the accepted order into the realm of "[the] destructive and [the] anarchic" (Charney 1990, 171) – its social implications and its community-building effects are not to be overlooked. As F.H. Buckley argues in The Morality of Laughter , shared laughter builds societies and even has an economic dimension, since "[b]y establishing a bond between jester and listener, laughter permits them to promote their trust in each other. With the trust comes a greater ability to exploit profitable opportunities for joint gain" (2003, 178). The following pages will elaborate on these ideas and characterise the traditional relationship between the genre of comedy and the idea of community.

There is some speculation that he served in the Battle of the Boyne in 1690 when he was only thirteen. Farquhar entered Trinity College, Dublin in 1694, but left without a degree in 1696 to become an actor. He gave up the stage after accidentally stabbing a fellow actor during a performance of Dryden’s Indian Emperor. He moved to London and began writing comedies, including Love and a Bottle which premiered successfully at Drury Lane in 1698. He subsequently wrote The Constant Couple (1699) and its sequel Sir Henry Wildair (1701), The Inconstant (1699, based on John Fletcher’s The Wild Goose Chase) and The Twin Rivals (1702), the last of his plays to be produced at Drury Lane.

Foyle’s War is one of the few television programmes to have been cancelled twice — and now there is a clamour for even more. The Second World War detective drama has been voted the 21st-century TV show that viewers would most like to see back on their screens. The poll of Radio Times readers put the long-running ITV programme ahead of The Bill, Spooks and Life on Mars in the most-missed ranking. Anthony Horowitz, the drama’s creator, said that he would be thrilled to take charge of a revival, whether a Christmas special or an entire series. “Foyle’s War was a passion project for me from start to finish and I miss it to this day,” he said. The show starred Michael Kitchen as Detective Chief Superintendent Christopher Foyle, an honest and diligent police officer whose unassuming manner belied a shrewd intelligence, and Honeysuckle Weeks as his resourceful driver Samantha Stewart. Launched in 2002 as a successor to Inspector Morse, the 1940s drama ran for eight series, attracting Sunday-night audiences of more than seven million and selling to more than 30 countries. However, the show was expensive to produce and had a disproportionately older audience. It was cancelled by ITV in 2008, ending with a VE-Day special, but public protests prompted a rethink and the drama returned in 2010.

Meeting like-minded people at the National Youth Theatre changed Paapa’s life. He was ready to take up a prestigious place to study Medicine at UCL, but turned it down at the last minute to train as an actor at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama.
