Home » The Commentary 20 films on politics and the media 29 December 2009 | Email This Post | Print This Post BY JOSEPH PLANTA VANCOUVER – A few weeks ago, Sean Holman, the talented and prodigious editor of Public Eye Online was on the program to discuss the year that was and the year to come in provincial politics. We got to talking movies, when I’d asked him if he’d seen State of Play, the fine American film based on the British miniseries of the same name. He suggested two other films: The Candidate and Shattered Glass. This got me thinking about what films had the best depictions of politics, media, journalism and the writing process. I came up with a few, and limited myself to twenty which seemed a workable number. Twenty favourites, as it were. Of course the list is subjective, and is in no particular order. I suspect if I ever get to watching Dr. Strangelove, or The Front Page, or Bob Roberts, or Silver City, they might be added to the list, perhaps even bumping off something already here. There’s nothing on this list that was made for television, otherwise the House of Cards trilogy would be here, as well as the original British miniseries State of Play, The Thick of It, The West Wing, and of course, the Yes, Minister/Yes, Prime Minister tandem. Perhaps Mr. Holman or others would like to add to or debate my choices.

  • Coming Soon to a Stage Near You: Yesteryear's Movies
Coming Soon to a Stage Near You: Yesteryear’s Movies A scene from “Network,” directed by Ivo van Hove, with (left and onscreen) Bryan Cranston. Credit Jan Versweyveld LONDON — The famous “mad-as-hell” line from Paddy Chayefsky’s “Network” rings out nightly here at the National Theater, where Ivo van Hove’s adaptation of the 1976 film is playing to packed houses. Its prophetic evocation of a world in which news is showbiz and showbiz is news seems like a perfect fit for our screen-filled, headline-screaming times. “Network” is just the latest in a long line of screen-to-stage adaptations that have helped turn Mr. van Hove, a Belgian experimental director based in the Netherlands, into a major name in world theater. His first film adaptation was Joseph Losey’s “The Servant,” in 1982; next year, he will direct Cate Blanchett in an adaptation of Joseph L. Mankiewicz’s “All About Eve.” In between, he has directed some 16 plays derived from movies by directors including Luchino Visconti, Ingmar Bergman, John Cassavetes and Michelangelo Antonioni. Mr. van Hove’s signature style is itself cinematic: The process of producing film and video is often part of the staging, with cameras capturing action onstage and backstage and projecting it on giant screens, a strategy that feels in tune with our age of incessant image capture. And it’s not just Mr. van Hove; theater has been experiencing a boomlet of movie adaptations. Derek Jarman’s punk-inflected “Jubilee” (1978), adapted by Chris Goode, opens at the Lyric Theater here on Thursday after earning rave reviews at the Royal Exchange in Manchester.

Early Television In 1946, the first COLLECTION PROFILE television sets became available to American consumers. Only a few decades later, television’s stylistic conventions have become a very familiar, virtually omnipresent part of the American cultural landscape. But in the late 1940s and early 1950s, the language of television was still being invented. Inspiration came from a variety of sources. Comedy programs such as “The Jack Benny Show” and “The Goldbergs,” dramatic anthologies such as “Kraft Television Theater,” quiz shows such as “Name That Tune,” and variety programs such as “Arthur Godfrey and His Friends” borrowed heavily from popular radio formats. Other early programming addressed the medium’s place in the home. “Photographic Horizons,” for example, posed models for viewers to photograph off the television screen. Brechtian Cinemas: Montage and Theatricality in Jean-Marie Straub and Danièle Huillet, Peter Watkins and Lars von Trier by Nenad Jovanovic A thesis submitted in conformity with the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Graduate Centre for Study of Drama University of Toronto © Copyright by Nenad Jovanovic 2011 Abstract Brechtian Cinemas: Montage and Theatricality in Jean-Marie Straub and Danièle Huillet, Peter Watkins and Lars von Trier Nenad Jovanovic, Degree of Doctor of Philosophy (2011) Graduate Centre for Study of Drama, University of Toronto In this dissertation I investigate the stylistic shift in the cinema of selected filmmakers whose work is rooted in Bertolt Brecht’s dramatic theory: Jean-Marie Straub and Danièle Huillet, Peter Watkins, and Lars von Trier. Through the work of these filmmakers, I trace the ongoing change in the cinematic applications of the theory. By and large, the change consists of a lessening of the role of montage – a technique that occupies a paramount place in Brecht’s theatrical and filmic practice – in favour of the objects within the camera’s field of view and the sounds within the microphone’s range. Since the ultimate effect for which the Brechtian filmmaker aims is that of Verfremdung , theatrical stylisation – itself estranging within the context of cinema – appears as a natural corollary of the described shift in emphasis. I also suggest a causal connection between the aforementioned shift and the growing self-consciousness of the style employed by meainstream cinemas (of which Hollywood is the foremost representative), which often manifests itself in the use of unorthodox editing patterns.
