    Mikhail Baryshnikov Aside from being renown as a dancer, Mikhail Baryshnikov has practiced photography for over 30 years and is now also known for his dance photography. His photographs capture the emotions of dance, they are full of vitality, rich colour, movement and grace. He effectively blurs movement portraying the dancers as somewhat alien or angelic. Despite having retired as a dancer himself, Baryshnikov explains that he is still a dancer in his mind and continues dancing through the images he captures. His process of photography involves being on stage with dancers. This closeness gives the photographs intimacy and insight; Baryshnikov’s lens is near enough to the movement to reveal its subtlety.     7th Heaven By Aubrey Solomon In the years between 1926 and 1928, Hollywood ex- perienced a maturation which blended art and indus- try to a new level of cinema. Influenced heavily by the experiments of foreign talents, largely German, new concepts of cinematography, lighting, set de- sign, and special effects known as “trick shots,” per- meated American film-making methods. The somber and sometimes morbid themes of German cinema also seeped into their films, often to the chagrin of American exhibitors who preferred their own exuber- ant optimism and happy endings. “7th Heaven” characterizes a perfect blend of opti- mistic romantic fantasy and German influenced pro- duction design. It also became one of the most pop- ular films of the late silent era.     The San Francisco Bay Area, Can disaster be a good thing for the arts? In the California San Francisco Bay Area, the answer is a qualified “yes.” A terrible earthquake has shaken loose mil- lions of dollars for the arts, while urban sprawl has boosted the development of arts centers right in the communities where people live. After the Loma Prieta earthquake struck in 1989, many key institutions were declared unsafe and had to be closed, fixed and primped. Here’s what reopened in the past five years alone: American Conservatory Theatre (ACT), the city’s major repertory theater, for $27 million; the War Memorial Opera House, home of the San Francisco Opera and Ballet, for $88 million; and on the fine arts front, the California Palace of the Legion of Honor, for $40 million; and the Cantor Center for the Visual Arts at Stanford University, for $37 million. Another $130 million is being raised to rebuild the seismically crippled M.H. de Young Memorial Museum, and at least $30 million is being sought to repair the Berkeley Art Museum. Within San Francisco itself, a vital visual arts center has been forged just within the last five years with the opening of the new $62 million San Francisco Museum of Modern Art and the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts. Meanwhile the Jewish Museum, the Asian Art Museum, the Mexican Museum and a new African-American cultural center all plan to move to seismically safe buildings in the area in the next two years. Art galleries, on the other hand, limp along compared with those in Los Angeles or New York.

    False Authenticity in the Films of Woody Allen by Nicholas Vick November, 2012 Director of Thesis: Amanda Klein Major Department: English Woody Allen is an auteur who is deeply concerned with the visual presentation of his cityscapes. However, each city that Allen films is presented in such a glamorous light that the depiction of the cities is falsely authentic. That is, Allen's cityscapes are actually unrealistic recreations based on his nostalgia or stilted view of the city's culture. Allen's treatment of each city is similar to each other in that he strives to create a cinematic postcard for the viewer. However, differing themes and characteristics emerge to define Allen's optimistic visual approach. Allen's hometown of Manhattan is a place where artists, intellectuals, and writers can thrive. Paris denotes a sense of nostalgia and questions the power behind it. Allen's London is primarily concerned with class and the social imperative. Finally, Barcelona is a haven for physicality, bravado, and sex but also uncertainty for American travelers. Despite being in these picturesque and dynamic locations, happiness is rarely achieved for Allen's characters. So, regardless of Allen's dreamy and romanticized visual treatment of cityscapes and culture, Allen is a director who operates in a continuous state of contradiction because of the emotional unrest his characters suffer.
