Sometimes the title says it all.

Little Gem is the perfect name for this seminal work by Elaine Murphy on three generations of Irish women living under one roof.

In the Summer of 2019, when the world was free and the air was fresh, three actresses appeared on the stage of Irish Repertory Theatre and embodied those roles.

We sat in green plush seats in the dark and witnessed how they lived their lives – through births and deaths and mended hearts. We watched how they propped each other up with tough love and outstretched arms.

We took for granted the ordinary conditions where they embraced this support and came out the other side.

After a year, when so many families were cruelly isolated from their children and grandchildren, we now revisit their stories through a new lens that speaks of the sheer necessity of human contact.

As we ease our way back, we recognize these truths anew and are all the stronger for it.

Love,
